Rational & Background Promise of biofuels for rural development realized

only in the long term;

At present opportunities cannot overcome existing social and institutional barriers;

Additional investments in productivity, research, institutions & policy necessary;

Focus on needs of poorest and least resource endowed crucial for broad-based rural development;

FAO activities are linked to ADB and IFAD initiatives in

the Greater Mekong Sub-Region (GMS).


Objectives To establish a Renewable Energy Activity Database for

the countries;

To document the experience of a number of local bioenergy and renewable energy projects with case studies;

To organize Practitioner’s Meetings to share experiences and consider possibilities for future action;

To create knowledge, networking and information with publication materials (Booklet –CDROM).

Database’s Objective The database aims at providing an overall picture of

the present situation and identifying major key players and programs from the private sector and the public sector.

The database (if kept update) could be a very useful tool for decision makers and donors looking to avoid

overlapping initiatives, identify needs and create complementarities in program implementation.

Main findings •Renewable Energy could contribute a significant proportion of total energy supply in the region;

•Main challenge is to ensure that small scale RE is better harnessed for rural communities;

•Public sector is enthusiastic about RE development but commitment is at its early stage;

•Number of factors preventing wide-spread adoption of good small-scale practices and technology (i.e. policy, investment, knowledge, etc…).
