ZINC INDUSTRY

Zinc is considered to be the fourth most important

metal used in the world following steel, aluminium and

copper.

Zinc is primarily used in the steel industry for

galvanizing process.

Zinc used in making coins and pennies, used in die-

casting in automobile industry, making battery

container parts, used as a substitute to tin and lead

pipes, ingredient in water colors and paints, activator

in rubber industry etc.

Fully owned subsidiary of the Binani Industries Ltd.

Pioneer in the manufacture of high grade electrolytic zinc

in India since 1967.

Started in collaboration with COMINCO, Canada.

Cominco Ltd withdraw in 1991, the company was

rechristened as Binani Zinc Limited.

Annual turnover of Rs. 566 crores.

The only Indian zinc smelter company to produce special high

grade quality of zinc with 99.995% purity.

Science and Technology, Government of India for its R&D

Zinc concentrate evaluation. Voltage measurement and anode

correction in cell house. Taking up of process/product

development studies. Preparation of control charts for

critical operating parameters and analytical values.

INFORMATION & MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS DEPARTMENT

This is a service department in the company. Binani Zinc has a ERP SYSTEM installed by ORACLE and uses an integrated online system called CKN for internal communications.

The major functions of MIS department are;

Information support for various departments; HRD, Commercial ,Production, Engineering, etc

Projects and technical Services Department is the department which leads to the technical development of the company. Introduction and execution of long term projects come under this department. Major repairs of the plants and other departments, green field project and expansion of the company are dealt by this department.

SWOT ANALYSIS

It is the first Indian company to produce special high grade Zinc.

Four ISO certifications. The company has a very

cordial relationship with the employees union and there was no strike after 1996.

The company is blessed by hard working and efficient employees. Here the labour turnover is very low.

Opportunities Threats

FUTURE PLANS The company intends to acquire mines hence reducing

the cost of the raw material. The company now depends totally on imported zinc concentrate.

Electricity can be considered as one of the raw materials for the company. The company is the highest bill payer to the Kerala State Electricity Boeard. ( a whooping 5 Crore Rupees per month). The company hence intends to build a power plant to meet its needs and reduce the production cost.

The company intends to explore further into the domestic market by increasing the production to 1,00,000 MT, by 2011. (At present the plant capacity is 38000 MT per annum ).
