BIG GAME APPLICATION PROCEDURES

Rules and Regulations Important information you need to know before applying and hunting on the Zuni Reservation.

1. ALL APPLICANTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR READING AND UNDERSTANDING THE PROCLAMATION, RULES AND REGULATIONS BEFORE APPLYING.

2. All Bull Elk/Mule Deer General Public Trophy hunts are package hunts that include: Permit; 1 on 1 guide services; Room and board for hunt days; field transportation; field care of game, skinning, prep of meat for transport to processor. Gratuities, meat processing and antler shipping not included. Guides could assist in transporting trophy/meat to recommended taxidermist/game processor. Companions are allowed at additional fees with Bed & Breakfast (no non-Zuni Guides/Outfitters allowed as companions).

3. Cow elk hunts 5A, 5B, and #7 are not package hunts, tribal guides are required. Application deadline April 12, 2019

4. Applicants are allowed to submit one application per hunting opportunity with application fee(s) of $25.00. Money Orders or Cashier’s Check(s) ONLY, made payable to the Zuni Fish and Wildlife Department (ZFWD). ZFWD reserves the right to accept or deny any and all hunting applicants.

5. Application and fees(s) may be mailed into the Fish and Wildlife office. All hunts will be booked first come first served.

6. Current clients in excellent standing with Zuni Fish & Wildlife Department will be given first opportunities to book future hunts by submitting 50% of permit fees. Inquire for 2019-2020 hunting opportunities.

7. All INDIVIDUALS with domestic violence or court ordered firearm restrictions within the past three years are not allowed to submit applications or participate on any firearm hunts. No refunds!

8. Applicants will be given 10 business days after clearance is provided to submit a deposit (50%) of payment to hold permit. Any permits not paid for within ten (10) days will be offered to individuals on a waiting list. Individuals are required to personally sign for and receive permit during working hours M-F 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. No exceptions! Permits are non-transferable.

9. No Refunds will be made to anyone unable to participate in a hunt for which they have already paid. Permits are non-transferable.

10. No access allowed to Mazone through Tribal property (BIA Routes/trails) to access State Sections for hunting, scouting or camping by General Public & Tribal members with NMDG&F permits or as Guides.

11. All Mule Deer and Elk hunts are open to the main Zuni Indian Reservation and Mazone Ranch. Tribal sections on Mazone Ranch ONLY which is not clearly identified; it’s the Guides/hunter’s responsibility to positively know boundaries (GPS).

12. 2019 Habitat Fee ($5.00) is required and must be paid along with permit. 13. It is MANDATORY that Hunters complete and submit hunter survey questionnaire.

Surveys must be returned 15 working days after completion of hunt to the Zuni Fish and Wildlife Department. Individuals failing to submit survey will have to pay a $25.00 fee and submit survey to be allowed to apply for 2020 hunts. Replacement surveys can be downloaded at http/:www.ashiwi.org/FishandWildlife.html. Faxed surveys will be accepted within the fifteen (15) day requirement

14. Hunting parties is limited to three (3) individuals, but no more than five (5) individuals will be allowed. Only the legal weapon used by the licensed hunter will be allowed within the hunting party. Additional companions are allowed to assist only in retrieval of harvested game. All restrictions and regulations shall apply.

15. NO OTHER WEAPON, (other than the hunting weapon, carried by the licensed hunter) is allowed on the hunt. The minimum caliber is .243 for rifles, and .40 for Muzzleloaders. Crossbows ARE NOT ALLOWED.

16. All Big Game Hunters must be aware that there will be other individuals out in the field such as wood haulers with chainsaws and small game hunters. Please be considerate!

17. It is unlawful for any person to knowingly molest, harass, or call in any big game animal without a valid hunting permit. This includes calling elk while scouting, or other forms of harassing animals.

18. If antlers are found with skull intact, notify the Game and Fish Department immediately. If not reported, you will be cited for illegal possession (permit voided and loss of future hunting opportunities for Five [5] years). Only Zuni Tribal members are allowed to possession shed antlers.

19. All forms of aerial scouting are not permitted. 20. It is Illegal to take or attempt to take big game mammals over ground baited with any

material or scent distributed there to entice/attract/habituate game animal(s). 21. NO Alcohol or drugs are allowed during scouting and hunting activities. Anyone in

possession or under the influence of alcohol/drugs will be reported to Tribal Authorities.

22. All rules of “Fair Chase “will apply to scouting and hunting activities. Fair chase is defined as the ethical, sportsmanlike, and lawful pursuit of a free-ranging wildlife game animal in a manner that does not give the hunter an improper or unfair advantage. Ethics and common courtesy are greatly appreciated by everyone in the field. Calling to locate game while scouting is “harassment”. All TRIBAL regulations will be enforced.

23. Zuni Game and Fish Department (Rangers) must be contacted to assist with retrieval of wounded big game that leaves the Zuni Reservation boundaries. Zuni Game and Fish will notify appropriate jurisdiction(s).

24. No mechanical broad heads are allowed on archery hunts. Crossbows are illegal, except for certified mobility impaired hunters. Scopes are allowed on muzzleloader firearms.

25. All illegal activities must be reported immediately to the Game and Fish Department, 782-2750/2758 or 782-4493/4494. All calls are anonymous under the Operation Game Thief program. Call the ZFWD for any questions and clarifications regarding the general public hunts.
