It is so nice to say Merry C h r i s t m a s and Happy New Year to everyone. As some know it’s not been a fun year for me personally.T h i n g s

haven’t gone quite the way I’d hoped they would have in 2012. But the wonderful thing about this year is “I’m still here” I thank God each night for the smiles, laughter and the times I do enjoy still.

I was given the precious gift of life and friends and family to enjoy it with. Part of my strength has been and still is from my best friend Tamii, she has been a “tower of strength” in her fight with her sickness and has never given up, she has encouraged many including myself to fight and never give up. Thank you my dear friend Tamii.Watch for changes coming to our newspaper in the next few months please have patience with us and we hope you will enjoy the changes to come.

Do you r e m e m b e r “We the people”? That used to mean what this country was about.Today it

means a whole different thing to a lot of people, mostly in Washington. To them, it means a place to go so they can get the money to pay for all the things they want to do and the bills they run up. What ever happened to the people who were proud to serve “We the people” and lived by their will to do the things we wanted done?I know the world has changed and it is way different than in those older more simple times but do you think they are still interested in what “We the people” really want? I wonder most of the time. For a very long time now the federal government has been slowly taking our rights and our liberties away. They do this with the cover of protecting us from ourselves. We no longer know what is good for us and must therefore be told what we want instead of being asked what we would prefer. Please do not misunderstand me, I love this country and would serve to protect it as I have done in the past. The day I took my oath it said, “I swear to protect the Constitution of The United States against all enemies, foreign and domestic”. I took that

oath very seriously and, to this day, it is still in my heart. Somewhere in the past, in DC at least, they have forgotten that they work for us and not the other way around. We need to let them know that we know the difference and we are still out here. Whatever your decision about my motives for the things I say here know for a fact I am a patriot. This is my country, love it or leave it. With the few liberties and freedoms we have left. I will defend her against all enemies. This is the greatest country in the world, we just have to get back to the basics and remember that we are self sufficient. The government owes us nothing. We need to turn back the pages of time and take care of ourselves and our families. This government was not formed to carry us, only to protect us and serve us. Some of the folks out there want to change the Constitution to reflect their agendas. This piece of paper, which was worked on for eleven years to perfect, has served us well for the last 225 years and has made us one of the most powerful and strongest countries in the world. If it works don’t fix it. These thoughts are given to you to get your thought processes working. Live free and have a great life.

Your Tennessee Country Boy,Chuck Webb

KARAOKEEVERY SUNDAY NIGHT @ 9:00!

LAKE SAINT LOUIS, MO (November 16, 2012) — The top amateur pool players in North America headed south to the Sunshine State in early-November to compete in the U.S. Amateur Championship. The 2012 version of the sport’s most prestigious amateur tournament featured 128 men and 32 women all with the dream of adding the title “U.S. Amateur Champion” to their billiard resume. The Men’s Division began Fri., Nov. 9 at Stroker’s in Palm Harbor, while the Women’s Division got underway Sat., Nov. 10 at the Crooked Cue in Clearwater. Both divisions came together on Sun., Nov. 11 at Stroker’s for the final rounds of competition. This year’s event featured a strong mix of U.S. Amateur Championship veterans as well as a talented pool of newcomers. In all, more than 1,700 players attempted to qualify for this year’s tournament. In the finals the of the Women’s Division, Tammie Jones of Muncie, Ind., defeated Asia Cycak of Raleigh, N.C., 9-4.“This is the tournament I’ve wanted to play in my entire career and to be able to come here and win this Championship means the world to me,” said Jones after the match.Jones relished the thought of knowing that wherever she goes, and whatever tournament she plays in, she’ll forever be known as a U.S. Amateur Champion.“The title U.S. Amateur Champion lasts forever, and that was in my mind every single match. I wanted that title, and to be able to hold onto it forever,” she added.Jones moves on to compete in the WPBA U.S. Open next year. Cycak finished as the Runner-up in her first U.S. Amateur Championship competition. Finishing in 3rd Place was Christine Honeman of Conifer, Colo., who was also making her first U.S. Amateur Championship appearance. In the Men’s Division, former champion Brian Parks of Bakersfield, Calif., defeated Daniel Gordon of Marietta, Ga., 11-4. The victory was Parks second U.S. Amateur Championship title, having won the event in 2009 as well.“I’m just really happy. I played hard, I competed hard. I take my hat off to

Dan (Gordon), he’s a great competitor,” said Parks after the victory.Parks, a U.S. Amateur Championship regular, said the victory meant even more to him the second time around given the outstanding level of competition that the U.S. Amateur Championship offers.“The competition just gets better and better. There are so many top notch players here, and to go through the 128-player field that we do, it just seems to get harder and harder to win, but I can’t wait to come back again next year,” he added.Parks will advance to the U.S. Open Championship next year. Gordon finished as the Runner-up in only his second U.S. Amateur Championship performance, and recorded two impressive wins over defending champion Ernesto Bayaua of Houston, Texas who finished in 3rd Place. In 4th Place was Troy Jones of Muncie, Ind. Stewart Warnock of Bardonia, N.Y., and Jeff Blattel of North Augusta, S.C., tied for 5thPlace.The 2012 U.S. Amateur Championship was conducted by the APA, and is the only tournament produced by the APA open to both members and non-members. Preliminary qualifying rounds were held throughout the country in mid-September.As Champions, both Jones and Parks will return next year to defend their coveted titles. The U.S. Amateur Championship is a double elimination tournament that offers the nation’s top amateur players the opportunity to showcase their skills through a combination of 8-Ball and 9-Ball matches, in the only APA event that does not use The Equalizer®handicap system. The APA, based in Lake Saint Louis, Mo., sanctions the world’s largest amateur pool league, known as the APA Pool League throughout the United States, and as the Canadian Pool League in Canada. Nearly 270,000 members compete in weekly 8-Ball and 9 Ball league play. The APA is generally recognized as the Governing Body of Amateur Pool, having established the official rules, championships, formats and handicap systems for the sport of amateur billiards. The APA produces three major tournaments each year—the APA

JONES & PARKS WIN U.S. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPNational Team Championships, the APA National Singles Championships and the U.S. Amateur Championship—that, together, pay out nearly $1.5 Million in cash and prizes annually! In 2010, the APA National Team Championships were recognized by Guinness World Records as the “world’s largest pool tournament.”The APA and its championships are sponsored by Aramith, Action Cues and Pool Dawg.

The northwest side of Phoenix has no shortage of smoke shops, with a saturation ratio of approximately one for every 2.3 square miles. The newest one, Liquid Velvet Smokes, is making an effort to change the perception of these types of shops, and just may well be the model for the future.Located at 2510 W. Thunderbird Road, next to Zia Record Exchange, Liquid Velvet opened its doors on October 27th with a little different approach, and a flair and ambiance all its own. The first indication that this is not your typical smoke shop, or even your average retail store, is that the principal owner is a woman. JoAnn Orlando comes from a family that has not only survived, but thrived in the valley for two generations. Her father, Mario Orlando, owns Maestro Mufflers, an auto repair shop in Sunnyslope that has been in business for over 35 years, and carries an A+ rating with the Better Business Bureau. JoAnn looks ready to follow in her father’s footsteps by doing her best to provide high quality products at a reasonable price, and providing a level of service along with a personality that many people will find a refreshing change from the typical corporation attitude.“We want customers to come in to the store and enjoy their experience, and leave with a smile on their face, satisfied that they received a quality product at a good price, along with the best service that we can provide,” said JoAnn. With so many stores providing similar or even identical products, folks can take their business any number of places in a relatively small area. So the staff at Liquid Velvet concentrates on paying attention to detail, bringing in unique pieces, and listening to the customers, while at the same time keeping the mood light and fun.“Many of our customers comment right away about how clean and bright the store looks,” says JoAnn. While the store is filled nicely with a wide variety and selection of products, it doesn’t feel tight and cluttered like many retail stores, smoke shops in particular. JoAnn has also made a conscious effort to keep similar products that cover all the price ranges, from the customer who has extra spendable income,

down to the ones who have to watch every penny.JoAnn had no actual retail store experience when she signed the lease agreement on an empty shell, and cited ‘dealing with contractors and building permits’ as some of the challenges she faced while setting up the store. The idea for a smoke shop itself came to her when she noticed that, despite numerous warnings and studies showing that tobacco products are detrimental to one’s health, so many people continue to smoke cigarettes and use smokeless tobacco. Her accounting background has helped tremendously with the transition to retail. “My career has been filled with changes, similar to tobacco, both in product and the way they are used and purchased. I had to learn many new products and trends along the way, and I think that has contributed greatly to the confidence I have in myself to make good decisions and adjust when necessary to almost any situation.” JoAnn said. That confidence could also be drawn partially from watching her father’s hard work pay off over the years. Born in Italy, he immigrated to the United States in 1965 where he owned an auto repair and auto parts store in Brooklyn, New York. Mario moved the family to Arizona in 1977 and owned a service station until 1983, which is when he moved to his current location under Maestro Muffler. During a conversation a few days ago, a gentleman realized that he was a customer of both Liquid Velvet and Maestro Muffler, and said that his family had been taking their vehicles to Mario for years, and that he would continue to support JoAnn’s store also.So what would make a woman, who already seems to have plenty of work to keep her busy, venture into the retail world? The answer is simple: Drive and motivation to succeed. She said, “I seem to thrive on being busy and push myself to be as successful as I can. I like new challenges, and this is an opportunity to branch out in a different direction, one where I can be hands-on in the store and work directly with the customers. “I view myself as a ‘people’ person, and this gives me the opportunity to

LIQUID VELVET SMOKES do what I enjoy doing without all of the structure and stress of an office environment,” she finished.JoAnn has plans to expand on the Liquid Velvet name and logo, and it could be sooner, rather than later. “Oh, yes. I actually started thinking about a second location even before this store opened, “she said laughing. “My employees then gently suggested that maybe we should get this one opened first, before moving on to the next one.” When asked if she had any advice to someone looking to open a smoke

shop, or any type of retail outlet, she gave a wry smile and said,” Ask me after the second location opens its doors.”With so many smoke shops in the valley, the real challenge is to keep the customers coming back to your store. Liquid Velvet Smokes has laid the foundation for that with their wide variety of products, attention to detail and excellent customer service. That is the main focus for this little smoke store with the glossy blue floor…Stop by and see for yourself!

The new 2013 Mercedes SL 550 is here and is loaded up with some high-tech items that should impress those who like gadgets in their transports. Under the hood is a potent 4.6 liter V-8 cranking out 429 horsepower, and hooked to a 7-speed automatic tranny. But it is the other items we shall look at here.

•First is the ECO-STOP device that shuts the engine down at stoplights to save fuel. I guess it helps pay the car’s base $109,000 price tag!

•Magic Sky Control uses electro-magnetic particles to turn that clear-glass sunroof into a solid roof at the touch of a button, blocking out the sun and cooling the car. This is a solid retractable roof that is expensive to make as it is, but a Mercedes rep tells me it only costs the factory $18,000 to make this complete roof assembly!

•The brake system uses sensors in the laser cruise- control to detect a collision, and can brake the car on it’s own. Rain sensors instruct the brake pads to contact the disc lightly to push off water, and keep the pads dry.

•Adaptive headlights can read oncoming traffic and set the low/high beams on their own.

• If the car rolls over, safety bars pop out of the headrests protecting the passengers. If this happens with the roof up, it will punch holes in the top, destroying that $18,000 roof in the process, but safety first!

•Active Lane-Keep Assist detects if the car is drifting off course, and will steer the car back into the proper lane, a guard against sleepy drivers.

Frankly I was more impressed with the 900-watt stereo that will set you back $6,000. Keep in mind some of these “safety” features are optional, and can be disconnected for those (like me) who prefer to control the car themselves rather than by computer. There are other power upgrades that can boost the price to $175,000. If you have lots of money sitting and want a high-tech car, this may be for you.
