BHS All-Rounder Stands Out at Tennis Trials

Year 9 student Harrison Macreadie has shown that he is more than a good footballer. Last Friday he played in the Riverina Tennis Trials at Wagga Wagga and gained selection in the regional team. Harrison played 7 sets against a range of top players from across the Riverina. His big serve and ability to adapt his shots enabled him to out-last many highly coached players. This shows that the tennis played at Henty and the Hume Association is an excellent „breeding ground‟ for success. Harrison will be competing in the State Carnival that will be played in Parramatta later in the year.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE GIANTS CUP UNDER 15 RIVERINA PREMIERS The girls braved a cold wet day at Bolton Park Wagga at the under 15 Giants Cup where they went through the competition undefeated. The first game against last year‟s winners, Kildare, ended in draw. The game could have

gone either way with both teams trading goals for the entire match. The second and third games against Finley High and St Francis Leeton were won convincingly. The Billabong girls really showed they were a level above these two teams, outscoring them consistently for the entire games and eventually having the two biggest winning margins for the competition.

The grand final was played against Kildare and the girls were keen to make amends for their draw in the first game. The girls started poorly and at half time were fifteen points down but regrouped in the second half and came out with far more enthusiasm and intensity to make up the half time deficit and eventually run out eleven point winners.

It was hard to pick a best player as all sixteen girls played extremely well. Sarah Bahr-Withers was the most consistent all day. Nakita Singe, Alyce Parker and Phoebe Crilly battle hard in the centre. The

entire backline were a standout. Emily Pinnuck and Olivia Hall were solid in defence, ably supported by Teneale Keane and Madelyne McQualter and Layne Parker kicked three goals in the final half of the Grand Final to clinch victory.

The team will now play in the state championships in Sydney in term three.

Years 7-8 Premier’s Debating Challenge Winners On Friday 21 June the Year 7-8 Debating Team consisting of Phoebe Crilly, Alyce Parker, Claire Holt and Emily Jones were successful in winning two debates against Kooringal High School. The first debating topic was „That it Should be Compulsory to Study an Asian Language throughout High School‟ with Billabong as the affirmative team. The second debating topic was „That we Should Ban Smart Phones for People under 18‟ with Billabong as the negative team. Strong team lines and arguments were put forward in both debates. Many thanks to Emily Bouma and Imogen Young for assisting as chairperson and timekeeper.

Congratulations to all involved and best of luck for the debate against Corowa High School next term.

Billabong High School is organising a possible excursion to Japan for 2014. This excursion offers an exciting opportunity for students interested in Japan to practise their language skills and experience the culture of the country. Students studying Japanese will be given priority.

The trip will be booked through an educational tour company, G.E.T. Educational Tours. It will be approximately 9 days and will include language study and cultural enrichment.

Students who are interested need to see Miss Fischer for

an expression of interest note this week.

The Australian Mathematics Competition 2013 This event was introduced in Australia in 1978 as the first competition in Australian Schools. Many parents will recall participating in this competition.

Students from some 40 different countries now participate. Join over 400,000 other Australian students who are willing to “have a go”.

The competition is for students of all standards. It involves solving 30 questions in 75 minutes. The earliest problems are very easy and get progressively more difficult until the end, when they are challenging to the most gifted student. There is a Junior Paper (Years 7 & 8), an Intermediate Paper (Years 9 & 10) and a Senior Paper (Years 11 & 12).

All students receive a certificate commensurate with their performance. These certificates are often kept by the students for their folios. They are well understood by employers and so can be used as evidence of problem solving ability.

Entry forms can be obtained from the Mathematics Staffroom and entry is required this week. There is a cost of $5. The competition will take place on Thursday August 1st 2013.
