J.R.R.Tolkienwasbornin1892inBloemfontein,SouthAfrica,butcametoEnglandwithhismotherattheageofthreeandahalf.AfterservingintheFirstWorldWarhebecameadistinguishedprofessorofAnglo-SaxonandlaterofEnglishLanguageandLiteratureatOxfordUniversity.Hisfirstworkoffiction,TheHobbit,waspublishedin1937.TheLordoftheRings,hismasterpiece,tooktwelveyearstowriteandwasoriginallypublishedinthreevolumesbetween1954and1955.Tolkiensaidofthisgreatwork,‘Itiswritteninmylifeblood,suchasthatis,thickorthin;andIcandonoother.’TheauthordiedatOxfordin1973attheageofeighty-one.

PaulineBayneswasborninHove,Sussex,in1922andstudiedatFarnhamSchoolofArtandlaterattheSlade.HerassociationwithTolkienbeganwhenhechosehertoillustrateFarmerGilesofHam,andshewentontoillustrateseveralofhisbooksincludingTheAdventuresofTomBombadil,SmithofWottonMajorandTreeandLeaf.AswellasbeingTolkien’sfavouriteartistshewasalsochosenbyC.S.LewistoillustratetheNarniabooks.
