Ultimate control and security

bigtincan hub and its server component offer the ultimate security for document management.bigtincan hub uses a content store architecture, where content is added dynamically to a server and referenced from a database. Client devices use secure APIs to interrogate the database and are then referenced to files on the file server. These files are then retrieved and displayed on the client device. A standard bigtincan hub architecture for managing secure content is shown below.

Network Deployment

bigtincan hub is ideally suited for flexible corporate network deployment. You can deploy bigtincan hub to your devices using a Private App Store, using other standard in-house mobile device management (MDM) systems, or just download the free client from the Apple AppStore or Google Play store.bigtincan hub offers both a cloud based service provided by bigtincan and the option to use an in-house or on-premises server. The on-premise or “private server” option allows an organization to host the system behind their firewall for ultimate security and control.

Security Benefits

There are several key security advantages of this architecture:1. Secure protocol use:

The system leverages SSL communications, encrypting the link to and from the mobile device to ensure access to the server information is secured in transit.

2. File obfuscation: Files are not stored using their original file names – all files uploaded to the server are obfuscated to a long file string.

3. Internal content store: The content store server can be either hosted in a secure cloud facility or internally inside the firewall with other secure private network access restrictions already created by an organization. With the creation of an internal content store, the enterprise can control access to data for only users within the organization and approved external parties.

4. Ability to remove content from devices: bigtincan hub has the ability for the cloud server to initiate the removal of a individual content piece or wipe the entire content store from the remote device. This allows the organization to immediately remove content, including both read and unread content stories from the device… in real time. This system works even if the user has

the bigtincan hub application open and is on the story to be deleted. NOTE: this process also allows for immediate editing of content with new content replacing existing content on device.

5. Content Expiry: Content pieces can be automatically removed from the device based on an expiry time set. Want to automatically remove those restricted documents after the board meeting? Just set the expiry date, and they will be removed automatically from all the devices with no user intervention.

6. Jailbreak Detection: bigtincan hub incorporates technology to detect Jailbroken iOS devices. This ensures that the organization does not expose secure content to devices that have been jailbroken. This technology in combination with the Apple iOS delivered encryption delivers a secure structure for controlling highly secure content.

7. Network aware content cashing of file attachments: When creating a bigtincan hub implementation, the organization can choose to set limits of the automatic downloading of content ensuring that the right content is automatically pushed to the device over the right network type.

8. Two factor authentication: bigtincan hub uses the client device MAC address combined with the user credentials to select which content is delivered to each device. This gives the ability for the back end database to deliver specific content to a unique device.

Device Side Security Benefits

Using the bigtincan hub technology when combined Apple’s iOS allows for increased security for the following reasons;1. iOS creates a secure file access

for each application on the device. Without explicit user instruction is it not possible to obtain access to content in one application from another application (note this is based on Apple documentation and developer experience – we are not in the position to warrant Apple iOS features). Secure documents sent to the bigtincan hub are not able to be viewed by other apps without user instruction – and in fact this ability can be removed from the bigtincan hub should that be required.

2. Existing Jailbreak approaches have traditionally required a wipe of the file system on device. However, once successfully jail broken it is possible to see files inside each application’s secure container. To control access on jailbroken devices, bigtincan includes Jailbreak Detection in bigtincan hub. When a device is jail broken and bigtincan hub starts, bigtincan hub will identify the jailbreak and immediately wipe all content inside bigtincan hub, inform the user and stop operation of the application.

3. Apple Enterprise Distribution Tools. Apple provides a range of tools including the ability to perform remote wipe of a device, restrict the device’s access to certain apps, and other advanced enterprise management tools. These tools are part of a standard enterprise deployment of mobile devices and add to security over sensitive documents.

4. Content Encrypted with device lock. bigtincan hub supports Apple’s encryption API which encrypts documents when the device lock code is enabled.

Protected Stories

For users that require additional security measures on particular groups of files, the bigtincan hub system allows for individual stories to be set to “private”. When private stories and files are added, the recipient device sees only a lock icon. To enable the content to be delivered to the device and read, the user must enter a separate password that is then known only by the user of the app. bigtincan hub removes the contents of a private story after the user moves away from the story. When the user moves back and unlocks a private story again, the content is re-downloaded, ensuring that the content is delivered securely, and then wiped after use.

Reporting

The power to easily deliver secure content to mobile devices is important, but for many organisations the real power of bigtincan hub is the ability to report on the user of that data. From the server, the Admin can view which user has viewed which Story, opened each specific file, how long they spent on the Story or file or leveraged the Server Sharing capabilities to share content from the system with others. Reports are viewable on the web or exportable as CSV files to be integrated into other higher level reporting systems.
