    I f you have lived in Florida for a few years, you are no stranger to odd weather patterns during the winter. Sometimes it feels like Mother Nature just cant make up her mind. Is it going to be cold or warm or somewhere in between? Since we havent had a freeze yet, many flowers are still in bloom when they normally wouldnt be creat-ing a beautiful display in the landscape. Chilly or not, there are many tasks that can be done in the garden during January.

    There are a variety of plants that can be planted this month. You can plant some cool-season annu-als such as pansies, violas, petunias, and snapdragons in your beds or containers to bring in additional color to your landscape. Bulbs such as crinum, agapanthus, and gloriosa lily can also be planted now. They will provide beautiful flowers in the summer. Cover them with a good layer of mulch to protect them from any upcoming cold weather.

    January is a great time to select and plant camel-lias, which are currently in bloom. This will allow their roots to become established before the heat of summer. The Gainesville Camellia Society will hold its 40th annual Camellia Flower Show this weekend at Kanapaha Botanical Gar-dens in Gainesville. View the gorgeous cut flower blooms that will be on display from 1 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

    on Sunday. The Gainesville Camellia Society also will have a camellia plant sale at the show. You can buy plants from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day, so come early for the best selection. Camellias come in a variety of colors and forms.

    If you received a raised-bed garden box for Christmas, feel free to break it open and get started. You can plant a variety of cool-season crops right now including beets, cab-bage, turnips, lettuce and broccoli.

    For deciduous fruit, such as apples, blueberries, figs, peaches, pecans and others, now is the time to plant them so that their roots have time to develop before the warm, dry spring. You can also prune and fertilize existing trees.

    Have your plan ready for protecting tender plants to minimize cold damage for when that freeze comes. Locate your covers that you would use and identify which plants need to be pro-tected. If you are going to use plastic, make sure that it does not touch the plant. Watering landscape plants before the freeze can help protect them. For citrus, you can mound soil around the

    base of the tree up to 2 feet.For shrubs and trees, you

    can prune the non-spring flowering ones to improve the form. The third Friday in January is Arbor Day, so you can celebrate it by plant-ing a tree in your yard or community. You may want to consider a hurricane-resistant tree, such as live oak, bald cypress, cabbage palm or crapemyrtle. If you already have crapemyrtles in your yard, you can remove seed pods, crossing branchesand small twiggy growth to improve its appearance and form. Hard pruning, or crape murder as some call it, is not required for the plant to bloom.

    When it comes to pest control on trees and shrubs, it is best to apply horticul-tural oil while the plants are dormant to control scale. If you see any scale insects on your citrus, shrubs, camel-lias, and deciduous fruit trees, go ahead and give them a spray.

    When January arrives, even Christmas-loving homeown-ers might be happy to put away Santa and his reindeer. But the post-holiday mantel and fire-place can look strangely bare.

    The days are still short and the weather chilly, so the key word after the holidays is cozy, says Pittsburgh-based interior designer Cathy Davin.

    A well-decorated fireplace even without a wood-burning fire inside can be the perfect source of cheerful style and warm glow throughout the first weeks of the new year.

    Here, Davin and two other designers HGTV stylist Meg Allan Cole and Atlanta-based interior designer Mallory Mathi-son offer four ideas for making the most of your mantel and fireplace throughout the post-holiday season:

    1. Keep the winter themeDavin believes in celebrating

    winter even after the holidays are over. She removes red poinset-tias, but keeps white ones and white cyclamen around her fire-place. And she continues lighting white and gold candles on the mantel.

    She also encourages clients to keep tiny white lights in their living space for a warm glow throughout January.

    Cole agrees: White lights can absolutely stay up all winter long, she says. They yell, Warm and festive! Come on inside! Get out of the cold!

    Alongside traditional lights, she recommends using LED copper strips on the mantel. Copper is really on-trend right now, Cole says. And these strips of lights are battery-operated, so

    there are no wires snaking away.

    2. Layer Your FavoritesA clean, classic mantel with

    just a pair of vases or hurricane lamps flanking one large paint-ing can look lovely year-round. Its the perfect way to highlight a piece of art, and this sparse approach can be a nice break after busy holiday decorations.

    Another approach is to layer pieces on a mantel by propping up different sizes of art, mirrors and objects in an asymmetrical arrangement, Mathison says.

    This casual look is a great way to display a collection of items perhaps small, framed prints in various sizes, Mathison says, or a collection of tea cups. This vibrant approach can make a post-holiday mantel seem a little less stark and empty.

    To keep the winter vibe going on a layered mantel, Cole sug-gests using a collection of small animal figurines like deer and other woodland animals. Paint them silver or gold, she says, then drape tiny white lights around them and perhaps even add little wreaths around their necks.

I see no reason why your bronze bull would be a reproduction, based on collector demand. Generally speaking repro-ductions do not appear until there are high prices being paid by collectors

    Harland Young, 19242015, is listed as a West Coast painter. He produced landscapes and Western subject matter. I think your landscape painting would sell in the $500 range, perhaps more on a lucky day.

    R emember when you were little and for punish-ment you got sent to your room? If that was still true for grown-ups, I would be stirring up trouble all day long because one of my favor-ite places on earth to be is my bedroom. I absolutely love my bedroom. I like the way it looks. And I like the way I feel when I start and end my day there. It's my oasis.

    Far too often, when we decorate our homes, our bedrooms are last on the list. We invest our creative energy and budget on the more public spaces in our home, rationalizing that since we are the only ones who see our bedrooms, they are not as important. But I would argue that

    your bedroom is every bit as important as your living room or your kitchen. It's the place you wind down, reflect and refill every single day. So when we bought our little lake home and plunged in on our whole-house renovation, I made sure the bedroom didn't get short-changed.

    The only thing that's original to our little lake home is our two stone fire-places. We knocked out a wall, lifted the ceilings, changed out windows, inserted doors, all with the goal of maximizing every square inch of the home's small footprint. Since we moved from a very old home over 140 years old I wanted to add touches that made our new construction look like it had been there genera-tions. In my bedroom, that meant accentuating the crest of the vaulted ceiling

    with a wooden beam and installing a window seat by the big window that faces the front yard.

    Originally, our plan was to only use the lake cottage as a place to crash when we were working at our Nell Hill's Briarcliff location in Kansas City, Mo., so we didn't have to drive back and forth to Atchison, Kan., every day. We told ourselves we couldn't imagine sell-ing our Greek revival in Atchison, our home of 25 years. I laugh when I look back, because we were in complete and utter denial. The minute we signed the papers for our new little nugget of a house, we were goners. We had fallen out of love with our grand old home without knowing it, and we were completely smitten by this snug cot-tage and its promise of a simpler lifestyle.

    As soon as the drywall dust settled and the floor varnish dried, I began to move a few pieces of furniture from our home in Atchison. First, it was just a bed and dresser. Then, I started shop-ping in every room of the house for furniture I could use in the bedroom. I snatched a table that had been in my entry and used it as a night stand.

    Homeowners preparing to sell often make improvements, both big and small, to their homes that can help yieldpositive results and garner top dollar from buyers. According to a new report from the National Association ofRealtors, remodeling projects can also bring major benefits to homeowners who choose to remain in their homes.Realtors know that certain home upgrades and remodels can be beneficial to get more buyer eyes on a property,potentially bring in more offers or gain more equity from a home, said NAR President Tom Salomone, broker-ownerof Real Estate II Inc. in Coral Springs, Florida.

    When looking at the interior projects that yield the biggest financial results upon resale, Realtors rankedhardwood flooring refinishes (100 percent of project cost recovered upon resale), insulation upgrades (95 percentrecovered), new wood flooring (91 percent recovered), and converting a basement to a living area (69 percentrecovered) as projects to consider.

    Exterior projects are also important for both sellers and homeowners looking to increase satisfaction with theircurrent home. Realtors said new roofing, new vinyl windows, new garage doors and new vinyl siding are mostappealing to potential buyers and are highly valued upon resale (both considering project price and disregardingproject price). Upon resale, Realtors said new roofing would recover 105 percent of its project cost, a new garagedoor would recover 87 percent, new vinyl siding would recover 83 percent, and new vinyl windows would bring back80 percent of their cost. As for exterior projects that bring the most happiness for those not necessarily intending tosell, homeowners said new fiber-cement siding, new fiberglass or steel front doors, new roofing, and new garagedoors brought the most satisfaction.     3. Look insideIf youre not using your

    fireplace for a fire, use that space decoratively by filling it with candles or other items. Just remember to keep things

    looking reasonably natural.The go-to is a bundle of

    clean, pretty birch logs that are arranged as if they are wait-ing to be lit, Mathison says. I love to use andirons and then stack the birch logs in a pyramid.

    Some designers fill the firebox area with small book-shelves or other unexpected items. Mathison prefers not to: She thinks using decorative items that arent made to be in a fireplace can feel forced and contrived.

    Davin agrees: I dont like to see a plant pushed back into the firebox area where it doesnt get light, she says. One or two plants sitting around the hearth, where they can actually get natural light can look lovely, however.

    4. Get craftyYour mantel is the perfect

    place to get creative. Davin suggests exploring Pinterest for DIY mantel decorations. Youll also find ideas on Coles Youtube channel.

    One favorite of hers: Buy inexpensive cardboard cones that look like little mountains, then spray paint them in a mix of pastels with a bit of gold or white. Cluster them together with white lights, and then top them with a glass dome.

    A glass dome over anything screams design, Cole says, and it can cost as little as $10 at a craft store.

    Cole also suggests seek-ing out craft projects that use votive candles (she offers some ideas at hgtv.com).

    Dont forget to get creative under your mantel, too: Add tiny hooks if you dont already have them for holiday stock-ings, then suspend little glass orbs with LED tea lights inside. Theyll provide a warm glow without the work of lighting a real fire.
