Michelle Kelly – Naremburn, NSWAt the age of 18, Michelle was diagnosed with kidney disease; however, the decline in her kidney function was slow. She did not start dialysis until December 2014. Kidney disease is genetic in her family, going back three generations. Michelle works full time and likes to go away for weekends to Brisbane and Melbourne to visit her family. She contacted Kidney Health Australia, expressed interest and signed up for Big Red Kidney Bus newsletter via email. She booked for the Royal Botanic Gardens in Melbourne because it’s close to the city and in a great location.

She said, “I knew right from the start when I made the first booking that I would go again. I love wandering through the beautiful gardens.” Michelle was delighted to be invited onto the Big Red Kidney Bus at Royal North Shore Hospital in Sydney for dialysis on the day of the official announcement.

Richard Yann – Brighton VIC“I wanted to experience dialysis on the Big Red Kidney Bus while it was in Melbourne, close to the city centre. It was fantastic and the Monash Health dialysis nurses made you so welcome. The quality of care was excellent and there was a holiday atmosphere on the Bus that seemed to make the time pass quickly. I would certainly recommend dialysis patients consider having a holiday in Melbourne, accessing the Big Red Kidney Bus for dialysis in the Royal Botanic Gardens.” In March 2016, Richard had a transplant with a kidney donated by his sister Megan.

Big Red Kidney Bus Metro Escape

Kidney Health Australia invited a group of 6 young Australians living with kidney disease to travel to Melbourne from Queensland, New South Wales and rural Victoria for a holiday. The holidaymakers were 17-21 years old and they all required life-saving haemodialysis treatment. This opportunity was made possible by a generous $10,000 Commonwealth Bank 2015 Community Grant.

Dan Glaubert KHA NSW Support Manager hosted the Big Red Kidney Bus Metro Escape. Accommodation was at the Seasons Botanic Gardens Serviced Apartments, a very short walk to the Royal Botanic Gardens, where the Big Red Kidney Bus was parked providing dialysis. A number of sponsored activities were enjoyed by the participants. A trip to the MCG to see David Hussey and the Melbourne Stars play in the Big Bash League was a highlight, as well as welcome and farewell restaurant dinners together, and quiz and cinema nights.

Alex Schlabowsky – Bendigo, VIC

“My experience of the Metro Escape has been great. A portable dialysis ward is awesome! Plus, this is a great chance to see Melbourne. Previously, I had only visited Melbourne for medical appointments. I’ve had so much fun and the staff and everything has been terrific. The Big Red Kidney Bus is one of the best things I’ve ever seen. It’s really amazing. I didn’t expect it to be an actual bus! I expected it to be slightly different. It works and it’s very well done. The nurses are beautiful and really nice, and the care I received was great. Before I came to Melbourne I was tired and bored and I just didn’t want to do anything. I feel like I just don’t want to leave Melbourne. And now I have more energy and I’ve felt more positive about my life in general. This shows me that I can get away and feel free. I really don’t see a way to improve the Metro Escape. Improvement is not needed! Good to have Dan from KHA, with a good sense of humour and very outgoing. I would definitely use the Big Red Kidney Bus again and encourage other young people on dialysis to try it out.”

Leata Ah Sui – Daisy Hill, QLD

When asked about her Metro Escape experience, Leata replied, “It’s been pretty good. I got to come to Melbourne and see places around here. The Big Red Kidney Bus is really good, it’s comfortable and works very well. It has been fun being on the Big Red Kidney Bus with other young people. The nurse even let us turn our chairs and play board games, which was so much fun. I do feel a lot better after this experience. I

don’t think the Metro Escape could be improved, it’s pretty good as it is. I would use the Big Red Kidney Bus again.”

Kidney Health Australia and the young holidaymakers acknowledge the Commonwealth Bank with much gratitude for the $10,000 Community Staff Grant that enabled the Big Red Kidney Bus Metro Escape to take place.

DATA visits the Big Red Kidney Bus

DATA visited the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne in summer. John Podolak the new President of DATA (Dialysis and Transplant Association), and long-serving DATA Secretary Ros Ball paid a visit to the Big Red Kidney Bus in the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne. Ros, who is on home haemodialysis, has enjoyed holidays accessing the Big Red Kidney Bus for dialysis and she is a wonderful advocate for this project. DATA most generously provided sponsorship for a defibrillator on the Big Red Kidney Bus. Thank you DATA.

Please contact John Podolak on 0418 344 826 if you would like to join DATA and to learn about their two holiday houses available in Yarrawonga and Rosebud.

Big Red Kidney Bus Destinations Survey

The Kidney Health Australia Big Red Kidney Bus Holiday Dialysis Project offers a holiday dialysis service to all Australians on haemodialysis who meet the admission criteria. The Bus, a patient’s initiative, provides dialysis at popular holiday destinations. A highly experienced dialysis nurse provides the service and a renal technician gives technical support. There are 3 dialysis chairs and 36 sessions available each week. The Big Red Kidney Bus, which currently operates only in Victoria, is coming to New South Wales. It is hoped that by 2019, there will be a Big Red Kidney Bus providing holiday dialysis in most states in Australia! To assist with Kidney Health Australia’s plans for national expansion, we needed feedback from Australians on haemodialysis! The Big Red Kidney Bus Destinations Survey, which is voluntary, anonymous and confidential, was sent out to dialysis unit nurse unit managers and home haemodialysis coordinators in Australia and distributed to haemodialysis patients. The survey phase is now completed and we are in the process of analysing the feedback.

Thank you sincerely to everyone who has completed the survey and told us the holiday destinations you would like the Big Red Kidney Bus to visit in your state, territory or interstate. This has greatly helped the Big Red Kidney Bus Team with planning for the future. Holidaymakers will soon have even more choices about where to visit for a pleasant change of scene. Watch this space!

A visit to Dyson Group in Bundoora, VIC

A small team of Victorian Big Red Kidney Bus community partners representing Kidney Health Australia, Monash Health and the Rotary Club of Croydon met for a planning and design session at Dyson Group in Bundoora, (Dyson’s Buses) at the end of May 2016. The Rotary Club of Croydon are funding the refurbishment of a second KHA Big Red Kidney Bus into a state-of-the-art holiday dialysis unit. This will enable 1-VINCE, the inaugural Big Red Kidney Bus, to move to NSW to facilitate the commencement of the Big Red Kidney Bus Project in NSW (currently

no confirmed timeline), while a Bus for NSW is being sourced and then refurbished. Stay tuned for updates on this exciting project.

MILDURA 2016

Alan Trevethan – Cranbourne East, VIC

Alan was on the very first Big Red Kidney Bus holiday in Lakes Entrance. Mildura was his second holiday. He and his wife were celebrating their 56th wedding anniversary. They had come to Mildura for their honeymoon, so this was a very special holiday for them. “Having a holiday accessing the Big Red Kidney Bus for dialysis is a great break for my wife,” he said.

They love going away with their friends Harold and Isabelle who do the driving as Alan’s vision is not so good. Alan has been on dialysis for 4 years at Cranbourne Dialysis Unit. He would like to encourage others to have a holiday away and access the Big Red Kidney Bus for dialysis. Alan said, “You have got to make an effort to go on a holiday. It is so worthwhile. The Big Red Kidney Bus, I love it!”

Ian Weinert – Hackham, SA

This was Ian’s second holiday to Mildura accessing the Big Red Kidney Bus for dialysis. Ian has a caravan and boat in Mildura, “It gives me and my wife Olive a holiday and a break.” Last time Ian holidayed in Mildura in 2015, he met two other couples also from SA, Ken and Leanne, and Peter and Maureen. Both Peter and Ken, who are on home haemodialysis, inspired Ian to consider going on home dialysis. He did it and it has given him much more independence. Ian and Peter were both in Mildura again in 2016 for a second holiday and enjoyed catching up with each other.

Margaret Gibbons – Whyalla Norrie, SA

Margaret Gibbons and her husband Allan have just retired. Margaret heard about the Big Red Kidney Bus when she saw her specialist in Adelaide at Payneham Nephrocare. She has been on haemodialysis for 6 years and before that she was on peritoneal dialysis (PD) for over 4 years. They are members of the Motorhome Association of Australia and the Vintage Car Club. They love going on rallies with classic cars. Margaret said, “If you go for a holiday and access the Big Red Kidney Bus for dialysis, you get to meet new people and see new places. A break can renew your energy.”

Frances Gianinotti – Epping, VIC

“I’ve known for a long time that I have Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD). About 29 years ago, my mother was diagnosed with PKD when she was in her late 60’s. As a result of her diagnosis, my two sisters and I were routinely tested and all three of us have it. Mum started dialysis at age 71. I’m the baby of the family. My older sister had renal failure at 46 and started dialysis. Three years later, she got a transplant and is still going well. My eldest sister had renal failure at age 50 and started dialysis then. My kidneys failed at 59 and I started dialysis last year. I’ve just had my one year anniversary in March. I’m hoping my daughters and other members of our extended family will have the benefit of kidney education more than I had.”

Bill Comley – Barongarook, VIC

Bill and his wife Judy live in Barongarook, Victoria. Eight years ago, Bill was diagnosed with IgA Nephritis. He also has Type 2 Diabetes and High Blood Pressure. He had been a teacher for 40 years, teaching Commerce, Legal Studies, Accounting, Office Skills and Typing.

Bill recalls that in 1973, when he and Judy travelled across Asia and southern Europe and then worked in Italy and Switzerland, he got very sick with a serious urinary tract infection. He thinks this was the beginning of his kidney problems. Bill and Judy consider the Big Red Kidney Bus “a winner!”

Dianne Fraser – McKinnon, VIC

Dianne flew up to Mildura with her mother Pat for a week to visit her uncle. She knows Mildura quite well as she had been up to visit many times previously but usually only for a weekend. Now with the Big Red Kidney Bus, she can stay longer. Dianne enjoys scrapbooking and making cards as a hobby. She made cards for all of the nurses on the Bus.

Dianne has been a home haemodialysis patient for over 28 years. She has had two failed transplants. This is her second time on the Bus. Her first trip was to Albury/Wodonga. She hopes to get to Echuca next time. Dianne found out about the Big Red Kidney Bus from her brother, who is also a kidney patient. She thinks the Bus is great, as it allows her to have a longer holiday. She says after 28 years of setting up the machines herself, she deserves a holiday.

Garrie Newton – Mt Gambier, SA

Garrie and his wife Debbie have not had a holiday for a very long time. Garrie owns a trucking business. He was diagnosed with IgA Nephritis 20 years ago. He has only been on dialysis since July 2015. Garrie did Home Haemodialysis Training at Hampstead Dialysis Unit. He and his wife like the flexibility that home dialysis gives them. Seven years ago, Garrie bought a boat but in all the time before he went on dialysis he was too sick to use it. He only had 11 hours on the clock. Since going on dialysis he has clocked up 103 hours in less than one year. He also hadn’t caught a crayfish for 5 years – things are changing for the positive. Garrie and Debbie have enjoyed the holiday so much they have now booked in for Halls Gap.

Herwig Maxa – McCrae, VIC

Over the years, Herwig and his wife Maxine have visited Mildura a few times. They have their own caravan and Herwig said, “It’s so easy to be parked around the corner from the Big Red Kidney Bus. The weather is good at this time of year. I love the convenience and the opportunity to go away, to have a break from home, and get away from the cold weather. Maxine has books to read in the afternoon while I’m at dialysis and we have other friends here with us as well. It’s great what KHA is doing and you’re also doing some great education, it’s all good to see. Keep up the good work!”

ECHUCA 2016

2016 National Lions Convention Echuca

From 12 to 16 May 2016, the Lions Australia 2016 National Convention was held in the historic Murray River town of Echuca in Victoria. More than 2000 delegates attended from every corner of our vast land. Kidney Health Australia was proud to be invited along to present the Big Red Kidney Bus Holiday Dialysis Project to our largest audience ever. There was great interest, particularly from delegates who have a family member, friend or Lions Club member on dialysis.

One such dialysis patient is Neil De Waele, the current President of the Townsville Barrier Reef Lions Club. Neil attended the National Convention with members of his dynamic Club, however, he was only able to do so because the Big Red Kidney Bus was parked in the Echuca Holiday Park. He joined a number of holidaymakers in Echuca accessing the Bus for dialysis. He is a huge advocate for the Big Red Kidney Bus and has known about it from the announcement when it went on the road for the first time. Because of this important connection, Monash Health and Kidney Health Australia, with holidaymakers’ permission, agreed to open the Bus to national delegates from the Lions Convention so that they could better understand how the Big Red Kidney Bus Project works. We acknowledge Neil for his great support and his recommendation that the Big Red Kidney Bus be on the program at the convention. It was an excellent opportunity. We also acknowledge the Echuca Lions Club and Lions Australia for making it possible.*

*It is with sadness that we announce the recent death of Neil De Waele who will be greatly missed.

Norman Mulholland – Ballina, NSW

Norman lives on the Far North Coast of NSW and is married with 5 children. There is a history of kidney related problems in Norman’s family. His father and 6 of the 9 children had diabetes. Norman’s mother and youngest brother both died of kidney disease. Echuca was his first time on the Big Red Kidney Bus after finding out about the Bus through a pamphlet at the Ballina Dialysis Unit. He would highly recommend the Big Red Kidney Bus to others, “The staff on the Bus were always pleasant and very happy to make my holiday enjoyable.” Norman thinks the Bus is a great idea. He had no problems with the booking process and he says he will definitely be booking again, possibly for Lakes Entrance.

Michael Saffin – Winter Valley, VIC Michael and his wife Marion found out about the Bus on TV. He said, “To be able to experience different machines and staff and to have a holiday is brilliant. Another patient who has dialysed for a long time encouraged me to not get stuck in the one unit for treatment and to travel whenever possible. It has been good to get my wife to have a holiday away from the routine in Ballarat, too.”

George Buckingham – Yarraville, VIC

George has been on dialysis at Williamstown for 12 months. It was his first time on the Big Red Kidney Bus at Echuca. There was a flyer about the Bus on the noticeboard at the Dialysis Unit and his wife booked the sessions with Kidney Health Australia. George expressed, “It’s a lovely change from home, and something I thought I’d never be able to do. It has meant that we can go away and have a holiday together. I feel it has been really important to allow my wife to have a break away from home. The time has been very relaxing and the staff have been great. I love to just look out the Bus window and chat with new people.”

Three friends from Warrnambool Dialysis Unit share a holiday in Echuca

Lorraine Gleeson – Purnim, VICLorraine and her husband Rodney travelled from Warrnambool to holiday at Echuca. She summed up her experience with, “It’s great. I was scared before I came and quite anxious about having a new nurse put my needles in, but the experience has been really good and I feel very comfortable. I love being able to see out the window and watch things going on outside, treatment time passes much more quickly.” Lorraine would like the Bus to go to Tasmania and Cairns.

Beverley Gapes – Warrnambool, VIC

Beverley dialyses at the Warrnambool Hospital Dialysis Unit. Echuca was her first time on the Big Red Kidney Bus. “I read about it in the Big Red Kidney Bus newsletter sent through to our Dialysis Unit. After another friend and I booked, we then found out another of the patients we dialyse with had been on the Bus before. Using the Big Red Kidney Bus has been a chance to get away and have a break when it has suited me, without having to wait for a vacancy at another unit. I will definitely use the Bus again,” said Beverley. She would like the Bus to go to Nelson Victoria and to Tamworth Country Music Festival.

Maureen Berry – Warrnambool, VICMaureen loved the easy access to the Big Red Kidney Bus. “The hoist is a great innovation and has made it possible for me to actually use the Bus because without it I would not get up the stairs.” She would like the Bus to go to Swan Hill and Alice Springs.

We’re all going on a summer holiday … to Lakes Entrance

Carolyn Ellis – Greenfields, WA Carolyn had her first experience on the Big Red Kidney Bus in Lakes Entrance this year. She loved it so much that she has booked again for both Lakes Entrance and Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne in 2017. Considering that Carolyn flies all the way from WA, she has become our star KHA Western Australian Big Red Kidney Bus supporter! When asked about her experiences on the Bus, Carolyn said, “Well, I loved it! After doing home haemodialysis for 12 months, I enjoyed doing dialysis with someone else. It gets a bit boring on your own. The whole thing was just great. Spot on!” Carolyn commented how nice it was to go somewhere else and how good it was just to walk a few easy steps from the cabin to dialysis on the Bus. All she had to arrange was her accommodation and flights from WA.

Jeff Galbraith – Quakers Hill, NSWJeff is on home dialysis. He and his wife Gae really enjoyed their holiday in Lakes Entrance and it was his first holiday accessing the Big Red Kidney Bus in a holiday park for dialysis. It went extremely well. So well in fact that he has booked two more holidays! Jeff and Gae are looking forward to a holiday in the Grampians in October 2016 and then they are returning to Lakes Entrance in summer 2017. Jeff would like to encourage home dialysis coordinators to promote the Big Red Kidney Bus more widely so that everyone on home haemodialysis at least knows about the Big Red Kidney Bus. They can then consider having a holiday away from home. “Taking a break away is good for your health and the Big Red Kidney Bus is fantastic!”

William Harper – East Bendigo, VICWilliam and Helen Harper had a most enjoyable holiday in Lakes Entrance. What they found best about having a holiday was being able to access dialysis on the Big Red Kidney Bus with a change of scenery and also the freedom to get away from the very set routine of dialysis. They would both like to encourage other families to consider booking a holiday where the Big Red Kidney Bus will be staying, such as Halls Gap in the Grampians, Anglesea or the Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne!

Maddie and Jeff Robinson – Healesville, VICMaddie originally booked 3 weeks for dialysis on the Big Red Kidney Bus in beautiful Lakes Entrance but stayed for 4 weeks! She and her husband Jeff and daughter Adelaide were fishing nearly every day. Jeff provided freshly caught filleted fish for the other patients and staff. He made it known that Maddie was the fishing expert and she was the one who caught them all! They absolutely loved Lakes Entrance and the Big Red Kidney Bus. Maddie is waiting on a date for a Live Donor Transplant to be done. Jeff is giving her a kidney.
