Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo celebrates 20th anniversary with a ribbon cutting
at the NEW Paso Robles office! The long-awaited expansion to North County, complete with a new office and caseworker, was made possible by a $253,000 four-year grant from must! charities.
The new location allows us to better serve youth residing north of the grade. Families with limited resources now have easier access to our services. Volunteers appreciate the convenience.
The increased presence in the community is inspiring more local adults to share 6 hours a month making a difference for children who have requested a mentor to help them make important decisions at this pivotal point in their lives.
Please join the effort to make our growing program sustainable, continuing to serve more youth at our new location and throughout the county.
Please consider supporting our expanded North County efforts by making additional donations or volunteering as a Big. Please encourage others to do so. Visit slobigs.org

During my 2nd year as Board President of Big Brothers Big Sisters, I have had the honor and pleasure of watching our organization surpass expectations. This year our Big Event exceeded our income goals by 9% through the dedication of our staff, board and donors. We also received a generous four-year grant from must! charities, allowing us to open an additional office in Paso Robles and expand our services in the North County, where the need is greatest.
As I complete my term as Board President, I hope to have fulfilled the expectations of our community and my peers by changing the lives of children forever, helping them achieve their full potential. I promise as a continuing board member that I will maintain my
integrity, loyalty and commitments to Big Brothers Big Sisters. It has been an honor to be a part of one of the best non-profits in San Luis Obispo County. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your Board President.

Brett Whitaker and Terri Hicks hosted over 230 guests at the beautiful Villa Monte in Squire Canyon. Local wineries, breweries and chefs served their specialties while music from Latin Perspective kept things lively.
The Silent Auction was revamped with mobile-bidding, which allowed guests to continue enjoying the food, beverages and conversation. Auctioneer Todd Ventura and his crew encouraged guests to open their hearts and wallets during the Live Auction & Fund-a-Match!
SLO County’s Big Sister of the year,
Megan Pope, shared the story of her relationship with her Little Sister, including the challenges they’ve faced and the successes they’ve celebrated.
Megan’s commitment to her Little Sister can be summed up in her closing comment:
“Five years from now I want to be standing before you telling you she not only graduated high school, but that she was accepted into college. In 10 years I want to tell you that she is a happy, self-sufficient, productive adult.” We are fortunate to have mentors like
Megan who have made long-term commitments to their Littles.
This year was the most successful BIG EVENT to date, with net proceeds of $114,000!
BIG thanks to Presenting Sponsor Pacific Western Bank, our Business Partners, Sponsors, vendors, volunteers and to the very generous donors that make this event possible.
Your dedication to Big Brothers Big Sisters and your belief in our programs gives disadvantaged children in our community the opportunity to succeed.

San Luis Obispo native Diane Backens has an extensive history of working with youth, which has prepared her to excel in her role as our Commu-nity Based Enrollment Specialist.
After graduating from San Diego State University with a degree in Liberal Studies for Education, and a Clear Multiple Subject Teaching Credential, K-12, she taught elementary school in upstate New York for many years.
She also worked and volunteered with several non-profit, youth-focused organizations including The Beagle School (discovery ship), a nonprofit, indepen-dent school and the Sara-toga Rowing Association, a 300 member youth rowing club.
She has the kind of skill with youth that only comes from raising 3 children. Her youngest, Clare, volun-teered as a School Based Big Sister last year.
Diane is instrumental in recruiting new volunteers, using networking and presentation skills she fine-tuned during her work with the San Luis Obispo Chamber of Commerce.
Because her role requires recruiting, screening, interviewing, training and carefully documenting each new program appli-cant, Diane is typically the first staff-person whom new program participants interact with.
We are proud to have Diane representing our program and we are thrilled with her results.
Since she started, there
have been increases in both the number of people who call to inquire about enrolling and in the percentage of applicants who complete the enroll-ment process to become matched as a mentor.
We believe these positive trends are due to Diane’s ability to quickly build sincere personal connec-tions with people and provide overall fabulous customer service.
Since Diane joined our team we have made 37% more matches compared to STLY, meaning more lives changed for the better, forever.
Meet the Staff
Diane has created 24 North County mentor matches so far this year, compared to just 2 during the entire year in 2014!
