Inking It

If you want to try something new, relieve stress but still be creative, this loose ink workshop is for you-- no matter your genre. Give it a try and bring out your artistic talent you didn’t know you had.

I use simple materials: Turkey feather quill (which I make), balsa wood for shading, India ink and water color paper. All articles will be furnished.

Wondering how you can do anything with these materials? Come check it out. We will be doing a barn scene. You will be pleasantly surprised. I promise.

JAMIE TATE I am a painter, working primarily in acrylic with the occasional mixed media experimentation. My work is abstract, most often non-objective but sometimes representational, and always inspired and informed by the Mississippi Delta landscape. A favorite instructor once advised, “Paint what you know.” I felt like one of the long-time struggles of my artist’s experience had just abruptly ended, with both a sense of relief that I instantly knew what that is, and trepidation as I transitioned into a new creative challenge.

This work continues to evolve, but I never tire of the process of painting, creating interesting surfaces while repeating the imagery of the familiar and iconic Mississippi Delta ‘shotgun house.’ While now almost a thing of the past in reality, the easily recognizable silhouette of these once-common dwellings appear metaphorically in my work, their placement suggestive of relationships, conversations, places of contemplation and solitude. My work has been collected throughout the South, as well as nationally and internationally. It has been included in numerous juried exhibits, and received many awards. I am represented by galleries in Mississippi and Tennessee. I was a recipient of a Professional Development grant from the Mississippi Arts Commission in 2009, and was solicited for the Florence (Italy) Biennale in 2011 and 2013. I teach private classes for both young students and adults, and conducts workshops on acrylic paint, image transfer, and abstract painting. I am Coordinator for the Spring and Fall Travel Exhibit of the Mississippi Art Colony, and served as Executive Director of the Colony for 20 years. In addition, I support our local arts organizations and am a member of the Delta Branch of NLAPW.

I reside in Stoneville, Mississippi with husband Bud, Gabbi, the Labrador and very near my children and grandchildren.

Curating Our Collection In early 2017, I received a phone call asking me to recommend someone to go to the League’s National Headquarters in D.C. for the specific purpose of “curating our permanent collection of art.” While that has a certain ring of prestige and importance, I knew from my two and a half terms as National Art Chair exactly what this was going to look like. Having done the requisite art inventory as outlined in the Art Chair’s job description in our Bylaws, I was all-too-familiar with our art and ‘artifacts,’ which range from the ridiculous to the sublime. Also, serving at the national level for many years in various positions had come with opportunity to spend many hours working, visiting, and doing meetings, many, many meetings, in our beloved Pen Arts Building. What does a bored artist do while forced to sit through countless hours of committee discussions that seem at times to go in fruitless circular repetitious waves of frustration? She might doodle, and she might also study the art on the walls, while rearranging it in her mind. I had ideas and opinions about this project. What I had no idea about was who to invite to the party. The reality was that this was a task for thoughtful and careful consideration of how best to showcase both our valuable and important pieces, as well as our more ‘interesting’ items. But equally as important, this was a JOB that would require the willingness to put on some work gloves, get out the ladder, the hammer and the hangers, and go to work! What this was most definitely not, however, was the prestigious opportunity for decisive pointing and placing, for directional input with a staff, nor for collecting the usual generous curatorial ‘fee’ at the end of the day. This was to be a volunteer’s not-so-cushy undertaking, and I knew the moment I hung up the phone that volunteer would be me. Please join me to hear my tale of four days of hard decisions, hard work, blood and sweat, if not tears, mingled with moments of sheer joy. I will share the details of my process and how I approached one of the hardest and best jobs I’ve ever taken on.

How to sell an article about any topic

Run across something interesting? There is probably an editor out there who would love a thousand words and some good photos about it. Sandy Huff, author of 1,297 published pieces, specializes in outdoor and travel articles - which include gardening, paddling, bios of interesting people, what to wear, how to get there, and much more. She has lots of tips, starting with “Remember, you don't have to sell your idea to the public. You only have to sell your idea to an Editor. And here's how to find that editor."

What’s your specialty? How to peel a raw egg yolk for egg tempera paintings? Describing how mists drift over water? Thinking up rhyme schemes for kids’ songs? Growing great grass? Mentoring kids?

If you’re a quilter, there are almost a dozen magazines that need new material every month. Outdoor magazines want tips on finding trophy bass, cleaning scallops, or keeping raccoons out of your camp foodstores. History and antique magazines want to know the story of your g-g-g granny’s butter knife. Travelers want to know how to haggle in foreign countries, plus watch for pickpockets.

Electronic magazines are popping up everywhere. Book publishers need fresh topics. Visitor and Convention centers want to entice tourists to come visit their attractions.

Sandy Huff will give you tips on writing queries, using that magic phrase, “on spec.” And how to find that editor who is waiting for your article.

BARBARA J. DUNHAM

I cannot recall a time when I was unaware of art. Through the years, I tried all mediums, but when I encountered collage, I instantly connected with the tactile nature of tearing and gluing the paper, using found, created and purchased materials to achieve amazing results. My work is on view in Pensacola in juried shows at Artel Gallery, Pen Women shows and also on my website bjdunham.com.

In my art, I don’t know what I am searching for until I find it. The journey—the mystery—the spontaneity of combining disparate elements together—the intuitive process of letting the sum total of my knowledge and experience speak to me as I create. All of the art I have ever made, seen, felt

guides me along my path of exploration. My goal is to create with collage elements a visually elegant story that is mysterious and makes the viewer yearn to see through the layers to beneath the surface.

COLLABORATION BY PATRICIA BLACK-GOULD & BARBARA J. DUNHAM

Patricia and Barbara will present a short introduction (slides or video) of their participation in the Pensacola Chapters year-long collaborative program including their previous collaboration featured in the Fall 2018 Pen Woman magazine.

Patricia will then read her short story “The Crystal Beads.” She will talk about the genesis of the story, her journey and process.

Barbara will present the artwork inspired by Patricia’s story and her creative process.

The presentation concludes and Barbara outlines a new program to bring together artists and writers in similar collaborations among all Florida Chapters. As the incoming President of the Pensacola Chapter, she will act as Liaison for this program.

A short Q&A will follow.

Writing for the Christian Market

Karen will share how to submit to Christian publishers and reach their readers. This is a $5.7 billion market and is open to many styles and genres of marketing. Whether crafting wholesome pieces and books or more theological ones, there’s a place for many authors. The reality is editors want great writing to reach a broad audience and generally reject manuscripts with Christian jargon. Karen has written for more than seventy faith-based periodicals and a dozen publishers that are Christian, or the faith division of large publishers, including Harper Collins, McGraw Hill, and Hachette. Excitement in Photography

Have you ever been so close to a POLAR BEAR that you could smell his breath? Have you ever had the opportunity to snorkel among HUMPBACK WHALES? Or had a baby HUMPBACK WHALE come up to you and look you in the eye? How about a WOLF tug at your jacket while you were trying to capture a great photo? Perhaps you’ve been sitting on the ground only five Feet from a YELLOW ANACONDA, capturing an incredible snake portrait? What do you do to help your camera gear function at -38 degrees? How do you, the photographer, function at - 38 degrees? I try to capture these moments in my images!

Blues Women: The First Civil Rights Workers

This lecture discusses how Black singers in the United States of America emerged from Spirituals and Blues to develop Jazz. Their free-spirited songs delivered messages of liberation, signaling to Africans in America that they could be free.

Besides being effective entertainers, Blues women provided the primary means of healing of the human spirit with their musical dalliance that we can forever be delighted with and grateful for. This presentation concludes that Blues women Mamie Smith, Gertrude ‘Ma’ Rainey, Ida Cox, Alberta Hunter, Bessie Smith, Josephine Baker, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Nina Simone, Eartha Kitt, and Miriam Makeba were the first civil rights workers because their lives and songs symbolized liberty in its rawest form by tapping into the human spirit.

In light of the advances women have made in the male-dominated music industry, the opportunities for black women musicians are fewer and farther between. White and Asian women enjoy far more opportunities in music than do black women, who were the mothers of the blues that is the foundation for all American music.
