The Netherlands has a rich history as it is about water and sailing. Olympic champions, Volvo Ocean Race winners and many of whom started as Optimist sailors.

For the Optimist sailors it is a long time ago that the Netherlands were hosting a championship. Therefore we have to offer sailors, parents, coaches and officials really something beautiful with the Optimist European Championship in 2018 in The Netherlands;

We start where the Volvo Ocean Race ends

On Friday, June 22 2018, The Hague opens the race village to welcome two important sailing events: the finish of the 2017/2018 Volvo Ocean Race and the IODA European Championships 2018, the Optigames. More than 300.000 sailing fans from all over the world will come to watch the races, enjoy the sailing and cheer to the best sailors (to be) on earth. The VOR allows us the use of their First Class Facilities like the hospitality tents, media infrastructure, spectator stands and of course the live coverage of the races.

One event for the best sailors of the world and the best-to-be

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity: the whole week, the organizing city and the Volvo Ocean Race organization is in full support mode. The Optigames will have access to the First Class Facilities like the hospitality tents, media infrastructure, spectator stands, live coverage of the races, the race course. We will sail together, cheer together, eat together, and enjoy each others races and events as if we are one. Strange? Not when you realize that almost all the Volvo sailors once started in their own optimist!

A great venue...

The Hague is fantastic: great winds, with long-standing regatta experience of different World Championships. It's one of the training locations of the Dutch National Optimist team and it hosts the Dutch Olympic Sailing Academy. The Hague is the seat of government of the Netherlands and hometown of their Majesties King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima. The Hague is an international city with a great down town area, lots of museums, shops and things to do for family members of the sailors. Amsterdam is less than an hour.

...and a windy city

The Hague is the place where the action will be. The wind conditions are outstanding. Wind never fails! The average wind speed is 12 knots, 88% of the time the wind is 12 knots or more. The average wind direction is SW, with 8 hours of good wind per day. The average air temperature is 21 degrees celsius, the sea temperature is 17 degrees celsius, with an average current near to the shore of 0.5 – 1.0 knots. Sailing conditions will be perfect!

In the heart of the action

The boats of the sailors competing in the Optigames will have the best spot in the house: in the middle on the race center, close to the shore, opposite of the VOR’s harbour. With fresh water taps, assigned boat parking per country and security. Our own beach masters will organize the launch and make the the return fast and easy. Coach boats and spectator boats will be accommodated by the city harbour. People can watch the Optigames from the beach (with many extra attractions) and of course there will be spectator boats available for everyone who would like to follow the races.

All the attention

The Volvo Ocean Race/Optigames will be the Europe's biggest 2018 sail event. Exclusively for the Optigames, there’s an up-to-date sailors’ home with wifi, chill out sports & games. The entertainment factor for the event will be impressive, therefore the sailors will also have the opportunity to have a place to retreat and focus on their championship. The media coverage will be excellent, as we have access to all the media facilities of the VOR and our own pressroom. During the event, a team of student sport journalists will cover the races and stories will be available in real time via social media and a website. Results will be available through mobile apps and all sailors will carry a tracker on the water for live coverage!

Preliminary Program

The Optigames will take place between June 23 and June 30 2018. It would be great to welcome attendees and family members earlier! You can check in starting June 16. From that day, all facilities will be in operation for unloading material, boats, training etc, including buoys on the race course areas. The official opening will be on June 23, followed by races on Monday to Friday. On Tuesday evening, June 26th, the VOR fleet is expected to arrive. Final races are planned on June 29, followed by the awards ceremony and official closing ceremony of the 2018 Optigames.

The highest safety standards

The Optigames will use the highest safety standards, on and off the water. All sailors will receive a personalized wristband that is scanned with a mobile device at the launch area for a safety check-out and check-in of competitors. It gives a live overview while sailors are (still) on the water. When a sailor has checked-in, the parents will automatically receive a notification email that their kids are safe ashore. In case of emergency, the race committee can scan the wristband directly on the water to find all contact and medical details (ICE) and will be able to call the emergency contact directly from their mobile device. The personal information will be protected and only accessible for the organizing committee.

A great place to stay

We made an exclusive deal with Roompot Resort Kijkduin for sailors and coaches and team leaders; every team will have its own house with double- and triple bedrooms. The resort has tennis courts, swimming pools, free wifi, etc. We'll have breakfast and dinner all together at the Resort. It's only 6 kilometers from the venue and we will be using our own free shuttle service. IODA representatives, jury and race committee members stay at the 4 Star Amrath Kurhaus, walking distance from the race venue.

Simple to reach

The Optigames are very accessible. Only 30 minutes from the venue, we have two major airports: Schiphol Airport near Amsterdam - being 4th airport of Europe with multiple daily flights to/from main European cities and Rotterdam The Hague Airport. Will you arrive by ship? We’ll make sure you’ll have a spot on the quay in the harbour, because we can create hundreds of extra berths. Coming by car or camper? The infrastructure is great. We'll arrange for dedicated Optigames-camperparkings.

15.000 kids will join us

OCN works closely with our sponsor Delta Lloyd. Since 2014, we organise the ‘Optimist On Tour’ events (www.optimistontour.nl): allowing kids without any knowledge of sailing to experience the fun of sailing an optimist. City Councils and schools praise the initiative. More than 15,000 young kids have already attended these clinics. In conjunction with OCN and Delta Lloyd, The Hague City Council intends to encourage school children to learn to sail. And the Optigames 2018 will be the perfect moment for that plan.

The entry fee will be € 450 for sailors, € 600 for adults. Early arrivals are € 40 per day (b&b) for sailors and € 50 per day (b&b) for adults.

We can do this

The OCN (Optimist Club Netherlands) is the organizing party of the Optigames. OCN is well-experienced in organizing international regattas. We look back at the very successful 31st edition of the Easter Regatta 2016 with more than 250 optimists from 18 countries participating in 4 fleets. In May 2016 we will organise the 16th Dutch Youth Regatta with 450 sailors from 20 countries from all over the world. The OCN has full support of the Volvo Ocean Race Organization. And we can also count on the support of the Dutch Olympic Committee NOC*NSF, the Royal Netherlands Yachting Union (Watersportverbond), the Yachtclub Scheveningen and the city of The Hague.
