What is intelligent shelving?
With the smartShelf™ range, library users can return their items by simply placing them
on an intelligent shelf within the library. The intelligent shelves update user accounts
and set item security, making items ready for circulation by other users. Additionally,
the smartShelf is a great place for users to browse, serendipitously finding items that
other users just returned.
The smartShelf range includes two solutions: smartShelf, the customisable components
option, and smartShelf integrated, the all-in-one intelligent shelving solution.

Immediately ready for check-out
Using RFID antennas integrated into the shelving, the smartShelf solutions can immediately
identify returned items, enable the security and remove the item from the users account. This
decreases the turnaround time for available checkouts.
Available with smartShelf and smartShelf integrated, multiple-user mode provides the quickest,
most convenient return process for users. While no receipt can be provided in this mode, multiple
users can place items on the shelves at one time and be returned to multiple accounts.
Increase circulation and awareness of your collection
The smartShelf solutions allow your items to be circulated more efficiently with staff
handling in-demand items fewer times. Simultaneously, l ibraries utilzing smartShelf
create a “lucky-day” collection of what the local community is currently reading,
increasing circulation effortlessly. This collection can expose titles to your users that
they may not have come across in the traditional stacks.
Increase circulation with recently returned, lucky-day collection
Decrease manual handling of popular items, making them more available to users
Free staff from menial returning of items for more meaningful tasks

Perfect return system for small spaces
Our smartShelf solutions are a cost-effective return system that are ideal for libraries that wish
to automate the returns process, but do not have the space or budget for an automated
materials handling system (AMH).
Because every library is unique, we offer the smartShelf solution as either a component-based
build, so you can build it into your own custom return areas, or as a ready-made all in one unit
that it is truly plug and play.

Eliminate queues
With the smartShelf solution, multiple patrons can return items at the same time,
removing the need for them to wait in line. As soon as the items are on the shelf,
smartShelf automates the rest of the returning process. By continuously scanning the
shelves to check for newly placed items, there is no need to limit the amount of items
placed on the shelves at one time. This creates the ultimate convenience for those
users who want to come in and start browsing for their next read right away without
having to wait on return processing.

Helpful visual and physical reminders for users and staff
To provide helpful visual cues to both users and staff, guidance LED lights are mounted
on the smartShelf integrated unit, indicating if the unit is idle, processing items, or
the LMS is offline. LEDs are completely configurable by the library, allowing them to
select colours they feel best alert their users and staff.
With the smartShelf integrated touchscreen module and single-user operation mode,
users receive a physical receipt after returning items. This feature allows users to know
exactly what items have cleared their account, yielding fewer item status inquiries at
the circulation desk.
