The Roman Box is patterned after an ancient one found in Roman Germany. What it held and who it belonged to is not known. As a story tool it has many possibilities. Depending on the contents of your box yourstory could take thrilling and enchanting trips to ancient lands and cultures. The contents of this box tell the dramatic story, possibly told by a Roman soldier, ofthe days leading up and including the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Each of the coinsincluded tell of participants in a most cruel time in the history of mankind. Caesar, theHerods, Pontius Pilate, Judas Iscariot. All names that make us cringe for their despi-cable behavior. Then the dice, the hammer and the nails show proof of the Romanhorrific event. The following seven coin replica set exemplifies the currency used inJerusalem during the time and ministry of Jesus Christ.
WIDOW’S MITE Capanius 6-9 A.D.The smallest of Greek bronze coins. The word “mite” was used in the Bible and wasobviously referred to as the smallest coin known and used by the Jews. Luke 21:1-3 . . . “And he looked up and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury. And he saw a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites. And he said, of a truthI say unto you that this poor widow hast cast in more than they all. For all these haveof their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God; but she of her penury hath castin all of the living she had.”
HEROD THE GREAT 37 B.C.-4 A.D.Also known as Herod l, was described as "a madman who murdered his own fam-ily and a great many rabbis." He is also known for his colossal building projects inJerusalem and other parts of the ancient world, including the rebuilding of the Sec-ond Temple in Jerusalem, sometimes referred to as Herod's Temple.
HEROD ANTIPAS 4 B.C.-40 A.D.This ruler, known as a tetrarch, was the son of Herod the Great, and his original heir. His second wife was Herodias, who was the wife of his brother. He built Tiberias inhonor of his patron, the notorious Emperor Tiberius, where he issued his coins. Thisreplica has a palm brach, the title, “Herod the Tetrach”, and a border of dots on theobverse. The reverse has a wreath with “Tiberius” in Greek, in the center. As a resultof his relations with Herodias, he put John the Baptist to death. Matthew 6:14-27 .
The StoryBox
TRIBUTE PENNY Tiberius 14-37 A.D.This coin, called “penny” in the 1611 King James Version of the Bible, should becalled “tribute denarius.” In ancient times, while the Roman legions occupied Britain, the denarius was the standard coin. Tiberius was the Roman Emperor (Caesar) whoruled during Jesus’ lifetime. Mark 12:14-16 . . . “Is it lawful to give tribute to Caesaror not? But he, knowing their hypocrisy said unto them, Why tempt ye me? Bring mea penny, that I may see it. And they brought it. And he said unto them, Whose is thisimage and superscription? And they said unto Him, Caesar’s. And Jesus said untothem, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s and to God the things that areGod’s.”
LEPTON Pontius Pilate 26-36 A.D.Pontius Pilate, known to all Christians for his delivery of Jesus to the crucifixion, wasGovernor of the Holy Land. He came from the household of Tiberius and was proba-bly a freedman. The coin shows a simpulum (ladle) said to be a sacred vessel pre-sented to the Temple by Tiberius. The obverse has three ears of grain bound together. The legend reads, “Money of Julia Caesar” (wife of Tiberius). John 18:28-19:42.
SHEKEL OF TYRE 1 B.C.-1 A.D.The thirty pieces of silver paid to Judas by the Pharisees for the betraying of Christare thought to be these coins. The replicas come from those minted in the Phoeni-cian city of Tyre. The shekel, acceptable as Temple dues, was referred to as “Tyrianmoney”. The obverse shows a laureated head of Melkarth, a Phoenician god in theform of the Greek god Heracles. An eagle stands on a ship’s prow with a palm branchin the background. The legend in Greek reads: “Tyre sacred and inviolable sanctu-ary.” The club is a symbol of Melkarth.
STATER OF ANTIOCH 27 B.C.-14 A.D.This replica of the Tetradrachma of Antioch in Syria may also possibly be the type ofsiver coin given to Judas for the betrayal of Christ. On the obverse is a portrait of Em-peror Augustus. The reverse depicts a female figure representing the Tyche patrongoddess of Antioch with the river Orontes at her feet. Matthew 26:15 . . . “And saidunto them what will ye give me, and I will deliver him unto you? And they covenantedwith him for thirty pieces of silver.”
ROMAN NAILS and HAMMERThese nails are replicas of the roman nails used during the time of Jesus. De-spite the fact that the ancient Jewish historian Josephus, as well as othersources, refer to the crucifixion of thousands of people by the Romans, there isonly a single archaeological discovery of a crucified body dating back to theRoman Empire around the time of Jesus which was discovered in Jerusalem in1968. The only reason these archaeological remains were preserved was becausefamily members gave this particular individual a customary burial. It is thought that, since in Roman times iron was expensive, the nails were removedfrom the dead body to cut the costs, which would help to explain why only one hasbeen found, as the tip of the nail in question was bent in such a way that it couldn'tbe removed, possibly from hitting a knot in the wood.It is well recognized that the claw hammer as we know it today was first used dur-ing the Roman times. This is well documented by artifacts found in museums. Thesample included in the Roman Story Box is the best design we’ve come up withbased on a limited variety of archeological remains.
ROMAN DICESimillar dice, some made of bone and some made of the local stone, were spread allacross the roman empire by marching soldiers during the 1st to 3rd centuries AD. Asthe legion stopped to rest or during the hours before battle the legionnaries gambledwith each other in order to double or triple their pay. The soldiers charged with Jesus’crucifixion were said to have ‘cast lots” for his clothes. Luke 23:34
• An engraved, metal plaque on the box cover reads in Latin: “When they came to
the place called Calvary, there they crucified him”.
• On the back of the box cover is a copy of the “titulus” or sign placed at the
top of the cross declaring Jesus as King of the Jews in Hebrew, Latin, and Greek.
• A blank, rolled-up parchment scroll is provided for you to write your story.
• Size of box is 12.5” x 7.5” x 4.5”
