T imes have changed and people don’t read much anymore. This is especially true of homeless men,
women and children. Many come to us with eye-diseases, no reading glasses or they are functionally illiterate. So how do we share God’s book in a way that they will be able and willing to learn about Bible stories? Most people, including our mission youngsters, enjoy action, comic heroes and excitement. That’s why they enjoy Marvel comic-book movies and read Manga or graphic novels. Take The Action Bible illustrated by Sergio Cariello, for example. It’s a fantastic journey through most of the major themes and heroes of the Bible with gripping artwork and concise, powerful story-telling. You can even find The Action Bible graphics in a new ESV Study Bible. They say it’s for teens, but adults love it too. If you’d like to help a mission young person or an older resident develop a fascination with the Bible, please consider buying a Bible or Bible story book for a homeless child or their mother.
Serious Adult Residents Desire Study Bibles
Some of our mission “scholars” enjoy studying the Bible in-depth. For them, a “Study Bible” may be the best choice. • The Quest Study bible $18.18 ea. (scholarly notes) • Celebrate Recovery $9.55 ea. (for recovering addicts) • Teen Life Application Bible $13.34 ea. (good notes and application) • The Student Bible NRSV $13.34 ea. (scholarly notes) Thomas Nelson makes a nice economical plain-text bible. It comes in black, burgundy, or a “cool” purple with silver-gilded pages. It has Smyth-sewn binding for long-life, 11 point giant print, reads verse-by-verse and is a smaller personal size. I found them on sale and purchased 35 bibles for the mission – but we could use more. It’s called the NKJV Personal Giant Print Reference Bible.
Help the Mission Change a Child’s Life
Let’s not forget our children. Picture story-books can influence kids for life. For example, I grew
up in an atheist family. But, my grandmother gave me a wonderful children’s bible that I read from
cover to cover on the sly. Although I didn’t accept Christ as Lord until age 27, I already knew key
bible characters and stories from my bible story-book. We like The Golden Children’s Bible recom-
mended by key Protestant, Catholic and Jewish leaders and The Complete Illustrated Children’s
Bible available in bookstores everywhere for around $13. Enrich a homeless child’s or adult’s life by
purchasing bibles that are fun and educational to read. Your ministry will have lasting effects.
