The Lee Street Church of Christ was the first of four congregations that North "A" helped to plant in

our city. My understanding is that it was around 1937 when elders of our congregation, which at the

time was less than a decade old, invited Luke Miller, then preaching in Port Arthur, Texas, to preach

a three week evangelistic meeting among African-Americans in Midland. Miller, an associate of Mar-

shall Keeble who often led singing during Keeble's evangelistic meetings, baptized more than 10,000

people and established over 100 congregations during his preaching career. Those responding to the

gospel during those three weeks constituted the beginning of the Lee Street congregation. In 1959,

L.H. Alexander, who for many years served as Minister of the Word at Lee Street, began the West

Texas Lectureship. The 59th West Texas Lectureship is scheduled for April 8-12, with all lessons
