Huddle ups are for churches that have a drop-off time before the session begins. There are multiple ideas for interaction during this time, such as simple games that preschoolers can play on the floor or within whatever arrangements you gather your kids. This time can continue for a few seconds even after the stage manager addresses the crowd.

Do you guys know what my favorite part of each week is? It’s working with my favorite people! Everyone is so kind to one another and works together to make each day a great one. Our lighting team, video team, and audio team work so well together so that you can see and hear everything we’re going to do today.

Isn’t it nice to be around people who are nice? I think so, too. How about you? Are you nice? We’re going to be talking more about that today.

Today, our friends are going to build walls using these blocks. When I say “Go,” we will cheer on each team as they build as quickly as they can to make the highest wall they can with all of their building blocks.

Builders, are you ready? Are you all ready to cheer on your friends? OK … on your marks, get set, go!

Great job! Everyone, let’s give our builders a big round of applause! You guys did such a great job being kind to your friends who were building! In our story today, we’re going to hear about how much God loves it when we’re kind, so let’s listen carefully.

STORYTELLER

(Show Bible Story slide.) Hey, everyone! My name is ___________ and I get to share a story from the Bible that a lot of people haven’t heard.

This Bible story is about a man named Elisha. Can you say Elisha with me? (pauses) Elisha! Good. Elisha was a prophet who told people what God wanted them to know. Elisha traveled around from place to place as he was visiting God’s people. Elisha often went to a town called Shunem. Can you say that with me? (pauses) Shunem. Good.

Well, there was a couple who lived in Shunem who offered Elijah some food when he passed by their house. Then, the woman got another idea. She went to her husband and said, “Let’s make a small room upstairs and put a bed, a table, a chair, and a lamp there for him. Whenever he comes, he can stay there.” Elisha was very happy with the room.

Elisha asked the woman what he could do for her because of all the kindness she had shown to him. The woman said she had everything she needed, but Elisha learned that she had no children. “By this time next year, you will have a son,” Elisha told her. Wasn’t God good to give this woman a baby after she’d been so kind to Elisha?

The woman did have a son, just as Elisha had told her. When the son was older, he became sick and died. His mother sent for Elisha. Elisha came to her house. God helped Elisha make her son come alive again.

Boys and girls, it’s easy to be kind when people are kind to us, isn’t it? Imagine you are at snack time, your friend runs out of crackers, but you have a lot of crackers left. What do you do to show kindness? (pauses) Yes, you share your crackers! What if your parents tell you and your sister to go upstairs and play for a while. Your sister wants to play with your favorite ball. What do you do to show kindness? (pauses) Yes! You let her have a turn. You guys sure know how to be kind.

(Show Christ Focus Slide.) The couple in the Bible story were kind when they fed Elisha and offered him a place to stay weren’t they? They didn’t know how important being kind would be. God gave them a son! God showed kindness to us when He gave us Jesus to die for our sins. He wants us to be kind to others.

Will you pray with me?

Dear God, thank You for sending Jesus. Thank You for being so kind to us. Please help us follow Your example and be kind to everyone. We love You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.

MISSIONS EMPHASIS (OPTIONAL) • Provide red construction paper hearts, white paper, and glue sticks.

• Teach kids to say the Japanese word kokoro no ka which means “care of the heart.”

• Tell kids that one of the most important ways the Seelen family ministers in Japan is by loving the people and letting them know that they want to help them.

• Guide kids to glue the red heart to the center of the paper to create a prayer reminder. Talk about prayer needs that the Seelen family might have.

• Remind children that God loves the people of Japan. Pray for the Seelen family as they care for the Japanese people and share with them about God’s love.

Missions Story: Seelens in Japan Colin and Hannah Seelen are teenage missionary kids living in Japan. What’s a missionary kid? That’s a kid whose parents are missionaries!

Colin and Hannah are homeschooled. Hannah’s favorite subject is writing. The first language Colin learned to speak was Japanese. He loves to hang out with his Japanese friends and do fun things. Their family has lived in Japan for a very long time.

On March 11, 2011, an earthquake and tsunami hit Japan. Hannah had never felt an earthquake and did not know what was happening. It was a terrible disaster and very scary. The earthquake destroyed buildings, roads, cars, and people’s homes.

Now that Colin and Hannah are older, they understand what it means to minister to the people in Japan. Colin and Hannah are helping people affected by the earthquake with clean-up and rebuilding their homes. Colin and Hannah also are helping with people’s physical needs by sharing clothes, food, water, and small toys for the kids. There is a lot of work to be done.

One of the kids’ most important ways to minister is by giving “kokoro no ka” care, which means care of the heart. They love the Japanese people and want them to know that they care and are there to help them.

Charlie and Teresa Seelen, Colin and Hannah’s parents, have organized a ministry called “Feet to the Street.” They go out and meet and talk to the people. Then they try to build relationships with people by inviting them to barbeques. Later, they tell them about Jesus. The family’s motto is to “Know Jesus, know God, so that we can make Him known.”
