New BI Statistics and Technical Content

Key enhancementsNew Technical Content for new and enhanced BI Statistics

– New query runtime statistics– Process chain and DTP statistics– BI object request and process status

Technical Content for direct access and analysis of persistent data– By default, queries from the Technical Content filter read from

persistent InfoProviders only– Reading from Virtual Providers can be enabled on query level

by customers

Technical Content on detailed and aggregated level – For query runtime statistics

New maintenance for query statistics data collection– Enabling statistics and selection of detail level for statistics

Data load statistics are collected automatically– No maintenance necessary (as of SAP NetWeaver 7.0 BI, SPS9 and

Analysis of Query Runtime Statistics: Query Monitor

The Query Monitor (transaction RSRT) displays detailed query runtime statistics:

Front-End and OLAP: detailed list of all

(sequential) events

Data manager: Runtime of all (parallel) “sub” queries:• InfoProvider (<InfoProvider>)• BI Accelerator (<InfoCube>$X)• Aggregate (1xxxxx)

© SAP AG 2007, 13

Analysis of Query Runtime Statistics: Profiling

In the (new) BEx Web, experts/administrators can display query runtime statistics about the current user session in expert (“profiling”) mode &profiling=X

© SAP AG 2007, 14

Maintenance of the Query Statistic Data Collection

… access via Data Warehousing Workbench Tools or with transaction RSDDSTAT

For Queries, InfoProviders, Web Templates, and Workbooks

Switch statistics data collection on or off

Maintenance of the Query Statistic Data Collection (cont.)

Default settings for statistic data collection(Delivered) system default:

D = ‘X’ = On, Statistic Detail level: D = ‘1’ = Only Front-End/Calculation Layer Data

The default for all queries can be customizedExtras Change Default

InfoProvider default for queries can be customizedAll new queries of this InfoProvider will inherit the new setting

Statistic data management recommendationsReview the (delivered) system default and disable statistic data collection if performance monitoring is not needed!

Example: InfoProviders with low data volume

Setting the statistic detail level to ‘2’ for all queries will result in large amounts of data in the statistics data collection tables

Rule of thumb: ~ 30-40 records per query navigation stepFrequent transfer to Technical Content InfoProviders is recommendedDelete statistics data (in transaction RSDDSTAT) frequently

© SAP AG 2007, 16

Deleting Query Runtime Statistics

Estimated data volume in query runtime statistics

Depending on the detail statistics level, 20-40 records may be written per navigation step to the BI statistics tables (for InfoProviders/queries for which statistics data collection is turned on)

Example: 500 users per day, each with 6 navigation steps on average = 500 x 6 x 30 = 90,000 records/day in the BI statistics tables!

1. Manual deletion of statistics data

In transaction RSDDSTAT, enter dates to delete

2. Automatic deletion during data load

By default, data of the last 14 days is deleted out of the BI statistics tables with each delta load for query runtime statistics. This timeframe can be changed by modifying parameter TCT_KEEP_OLAP_DM_DATA_N_DAYS in table RSADMIN.

See SAP Note 891740 “Query runtime statistics: Corrections for extractors”for more information

CCMS Monitoring — Benefits

Centralized monitoring – one screenLarge landscapes can be centrally monitored by a single administrator

ScalabilityLandscapes with only a few components, or those with more than a hundred, can be monitored efficiently

Proactive monitoring with alertsNo admin activity is required, except in case of alerts Alert notifications (email, SMS, etc.) can be triggered automatically

Assisted problem detection and resolutionFrom the central system, administrators can drill down to a monitored component to identify the root cause of the alert using predefined analysis features

Persistent Performance Data — Why?

Short-lived monitoring data in the central system (CEN)30 minute values, 16 quarter-hour values, and 24 hour values are stored for each attribute in a shared memory segment (typically 20MB) before the data is overwritten

The need for persistent dataSome key values should be available as history data for long-term analysis and reporting (Service Level Management [SLM])Performance and availability data are key for SLM

Query Runtime Statistics in SAP NetWeaver 7.0

Front-End/OLAP Statistics vs. Data Manager Statistics The SAP BW 3.x OLAP statistics are split into front-end/OLAP statistics (Client-side time) and Data Manager statistics (DB Time)Front-end/OLAP time primarily operates as serial execution. The Data Manager primarily operates using parallel execution.Front-end/OLAP records many different events. The Data Manager records only a small number of events.

Statistic detail levelsQueries now have very detailed statistics! The level of detail you can record for a query is customizable

Event conceptThere is a new Event ID Characteristic that provides an extensible framework for measuring performance

Enhanced coverage of BI functionalityEnhanced: The Statistics measures performance for BEx Web and Planning now!New: Statistics now measures the performance of the BI Accelerator specifically

© SAP AG 2007, 46

BI Statistics Framework — New Event Concept

Event IDRuntime information gets collected at many different events in processingCommon concept used in query runtime, planning, and warehouse management statisticsGuarantees flexibility for further extensionsIs the basis for end-to-end runtime monitoring of processing in SAP NetWeaver BIDepending on the event, the time is measured from start to end point or only at end point (time since last end point)
