Our Father’s Children has always had a dream of a place that children of abuse and neglect could come and call home. A place with amenities for each program. A familiar place to create a sense of belonging. In the lives of these foster children, change is constant and

often unwelcome. Moving from place to place, family to family, changing schools, making new friends – none of these things are easy for any child – especially a child who already feels so lost.

Camp Akiva has come about as a true miracle from God! For the last seven years, I have been dreaming of a camp facility to further the ministry of Our Father’s Children (OFC). This dream was a result of my desire to reach more children of abuse and negelct. Over those years, a number of possible camp sites were introduced to OFC. However, none of them were a perfect fit. I began to feel this was a dream that would not come true.

However, a former OFC board member attended

a family camp and met a representative from a group of churches who owned an existing facility known as Christian Camp of the Living Word (CCLW). This group was seeking a buyer – someone who could purchase the property, improve it, allow their churches to continue using it, and assure use of the facility for kingdom purposes.

What a miracle! OFC met with CCLW at the campsite in October 2011 and discussed the opportunity. Over the course of the first half of 2012, details were negotiated and the sale consummated in the fall of 2012!

Camp Akiva will offer something to these children that many other places simply can’t: a sense of home.

Why Camp Akiva?

Currently, OFC takes the Royal Family Kids to a retreat center in Hawkins, Texas. Camp is maxed out due to the number of beds available at this location and securing a third week of camp is nearly impossible due to high demand and limited summer weeks. Royal Family Kids also have special needs; buildings with restrooms under the same roof so a child doesn’t have to venture out in the middle of the night, lighted areas, and space to alleviate any feelings of claustrophobia or a sense that may trigger a scary memory. This program also requires a ‘closed’ facility for the week; one where no other groups are allowed on the premises to provide a safe space for the children, surrounding them with trained volunteers. OFC’s retreat programs are also split between two other retreat facilities; both offering different amenities for the age-specific groups. This means as each child ages from program to program, they change facilities and are expected to learn new paths and buildings.

WE HAVE GROWN BY 255% BUT WE ARE MAXED OUT!

The money raised will be used to create new buildings, a new pool, a new lake and pond area, as well as upgrades to the existing campsite. Upon completion the camp will sleep 360 at one time with three possible meeting areas. The three water activity sites will allow for swimming in two areas (pool and pond), fishing and canoeing. There will be two playing fields, one for baseball/softball and one for football/soccer/ultimate frisbee. With your donation, we can help hundreds of children of abuse and neglect.

The Powerof Socks

Trey was only 6 years old at the time. Mom was a drug user and had to leave Trey and his younger brother home with a man who they didn’t know. Things went bad. The man abused Trey and his brother. Trey was beaten several times trying to take up for his brother. Trey was burned several times over a hot stove and burner. Ultimately Trey was taken to a hospital. His feet were so badly burned, the doctors had to amputate the lower part of both feet.

After years of abuse in other foster homes, Trey found a loving home and parents who deeply cared for him. They eventually adopted him and signed him up for Royal Family Kids Camp.

During that week of camp, nurses fitted Trey with the thickest, softest socks they could find to help him with the discomfort of wearing shoes that limited his participation. Trey was so moved that he began to cry. Trey returned to RFKC for the next 2 years. Each year, he participated more and more. One year, he received special swim shoes preventing any further stares at his deformed feet. God has done some wonderful things in Trey’s life from adoption to camp.

Help Camp Akiva offer hope to the next Trey!

What is the meaning of “Akiva”?What inspired us the most was “protect” or “shelter”. God has blessed this camp to be a place of shelter to many who have not experienced it in their daily lives. Camp Akiva will be a safe and fun place where every person leaves revived, refreshed and reminded of God’s greater love that offers hope to everyone.

“If someone asks me ‘can you raise the money for Camp Akiva?’, my first response is to ask, ‘how can we not?’ I am excited about the opportunity that stands before us to touch the lives of hundreds of children of abuse and neglect. ” Trine Owen, OFC Chairman of the Board
