INTRODUCING STEAM POWER PLANT

Page 8: BHEL TRAINING PPT

• It is a mechanical device that extracts thermal energy from pressurized steam, and convert into rotary motion.

• It has almost completely replaced the reciprocating piston steam engine.

• It is particularly suited to be used to drive an electrical generator.

FUNCTION OF STEAM TURBINE

Page 9: BHEL TRAINING PPT

According to steam pressure drop

IMPULSE TURBINE• Maximum steam velocity( Impulse) is created at the inlet of moving blade Which means high

Kinetic Energy .This energy is utilized for rotation of moving blade.• More pressure drop in guide blade.

REACTION TURBINE• Reaction is created due to action of change of direction of steam through bucket. This thrust or

reaction causes the driving force.• More pressure drop in moving blade.

TYPES OF TURBINE

Page 10: BHEL TRAINING PPT
Page 11: BHEL TRAINING PPT

• Steam at high pressure & temperature is made to pass through a row of fixed blade mounted on stationary body in casing.

• There will be drop in pressure of the steam across the fixed blade resulting to very high steam velocity at the exit of fixed blade.

• The high velocity steam then impinges on another row of rotating blades mounted on the rotor shaft.

• The impingement of high velocity steam generates driving force on these rotating blades which rotate the rotor.

• A set of fixed blades and rotating blades mounted on the rotor is called stage of turbine.
