AVVM Sri Pushpam College, Poondi, Thanjavur
Inaugurating the WISH awareness programme in thr AVVM Pushpam college,
Poondi yesterday Dr, Rajendran, Principal of the college exhorted the students to spread the
message of health, and hygiene among the rural people. He said the country had one of the
most dynamic and largest group of youth who could put India as a very strong economic
force in the world. But this section of the society especially the women are not physically
strong to take up the challenge and opportunity waiting for them. Maternal Mortality and
infant mortality is among the highest in the world. It was most timely that the Bharathidasan
University has formed (WISH) Women involved in Sanitation and Hygiene. NSS volunteers
should take full advantage of the Health, Hygiene and Sanitation lessons imparted to them
and convey the same to rural people he added. Unless a systematic campaign was conducted
by the students to take the message to the villagers it will not be possible to improve the
standing of India in the Human Development Index report he added. Mr. V. Radhakrishnan
welcomed the gathering.
Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator WISH and Mrs. G.K. Krishnaveni advisory
committee member WISH addressed the students on Sanitation, Health and Hygiene. There
was a very interesting interactive session. During the discussions it was revealed that about
40% of the students who hailed from rural areas had no toilets in their homes even though
most of them had mobile telephones. The meeting was attended by over 300 women students
including 50 NSS students. Several students admitted that they had toilets in their homes, but
many of them were in bad condition and were not usable. Many wanted to know the
Government help for construction of toilets. The details of the Nirmal India Abhiyan scheme
under which the Govt. of Tamil Nadu gave Rs.4,500 for the construction of toilets through
the DRDA was explained to them.
P.S:Later the WISH team had a discussion with Prof. P.Krishnamoorthy , Principal
evening college(He was former Principal of the college). Prof.Krishnamoorthy said that the
strength of the college was about 7,500 of which about 4,000 were women students hailing
mostly from rural areas. He agreed to the suggestion that a special TOT programme can be
organized by WISH to selected 20 members of the staff(total women staff strength about 200)
who could pass on the message to the Women's students in the college.
P.P.S: Different interaction photographs will be sent in future.

NSS students at the camp in Mullipetty village of Manikandam block of Trichy
district today (23-01-2013) decided to take a survey of houses not having toilets in the
village. At the Sanitation, Health and Hygiene awareness programme organized at the NSS

toilets in their houses was stressed by Mr. V. Ganapathy, Coordinator WISH. The students
during the interaction said that while most of the households had television and cable
connections as also mobile phones they were not having toilets in their homes. The rural
families were forced to resort to open defecation. The NSS students as well as the rural
women were fully aware of the harmful effect of Open defecation and the tremendous mental

the whole of India less than 10% of the households in the village had toilets. Very few who
had toilets used the toilets as they were not used to the practice. The NSS Volunteers agreed
