Deed: On 10th February, 2018 at 5.15 a.m., heavily armed group of terrorists attacked the
Sunjuwan Military Camp. The attack resulted in heavy damage and loss of lives. One
heavily armed terrorist tried to barge into the house of a Havildar. His daughter Hima Priya
and her mother resisted the terrorist. After a great tussle, the militant threw in a grenade
which led to multiple splinter injuries on her left arm. Her mother was also grievously
injured and collapsed & fell down on the floor. Hima Priya very valiantly opened the door
and stood in the way of the terrorist. She started a conversation with the terrorist who was
aggressive and out to kill without provocation. The compound of the camp was encircled
by the Army. Inspite of a gun being put on Hima Priya's head and being held hostage, she
continued conversing for three to four hours and thereby ensuring the safety of her mother
& two younger sisters. Her conversation with the terrorist ensured non-engagement of any
other targets in the area by the terrorist. After sustained argument, Hima Priya convinced
the terrorist to let her family go for the urgent medical intervention that her mother
required. While moving out, instead of calling out to the troops to help her mother, she
directed her family away from the sight of militants thereby not exposing the rescuing
troops to any danger.
Her exemplary courage and spontaneous initiatives in standing up to the terrorist saved her
family and prevented further loss of lives, limiting the casualties.

Deed: On 10 February 2018, the Sunjuwan Military Station was under a terrorist attack in
the early hours of morning by three heavily armed terrorists. Soumyadip Jana was in the
residential block with his family. Hearing the commotion at the door, Soumyadip without
caring for his own safety ensured that his mother and sister are out of harm by pushing
them into a room and locking the door from inside. The terrorist entered the house by firing
on the main door. Seeing the locked door the terrorist tried to break it open. However
Soumyadip had barricaded the door with steel trunks and stood steadfastly against them.
Frustrated at their inability to break open the door a grenade was lobbed by the terrorists
and there was firing from A56 gun. Soumyadip who was standing guarding the door
sustained multiple splinter injuries in his head & body which resulted him being in coma
for more than three months. The explosion and gunshots that Soumyadip bore alerted the
forces who were able to subsequently nab the terrorists. He has been operated multiple
times. He is unable to move on his own as the left side of his body is still paralysed. He also
cannot see properly due to left hemi paresis, severe right sided hearing loss and neuro
psychotic impairment.
Soumyadip Jana displayed exceptional courage showing no fear for his own safety and
saved two precious lives.
He is still undergoing physiotherapy in Research & Referral Hospital, Delhi.

Deed: The girl students of a government school in Himachal Pradesh complained to their Principal about some miscreants who would make filthy remarks, block their way, while going to and fro from School. They would tease them verbally and engage in vulgar exhibition in front of the girls. All this was very embarrassing for the girls. On 10th July 2017, Muskan and Seema with three other friends were on their way to school when a man again indulged in exhibiting obscene sexual activities. The girls reprimanded him but he continued his dirty jokes & filthy acts. Muskan and her friends reached their limits of humiliation and toleration. They challenged the man and beat him up. In this confrontation, Muskan and her friends received injuries. The miscreant pushed Muskan from the hillslope due to which she was seriously injured. Under the leadership of Muskan, her friends took the miscreant to the ladies police station and got a case registered against him.
Muskan and Seema set an example for other girls in society to fearlessly initiate bold action for their safety and to not silently tolerate inappropriate behavior of hooligans.

Deed: Ranjita Majhi was studying in 7th class in Kalahandi District. Her father wanted to fix her marriage with an elderly alcoholic man from the neighbouring district. During the puja vacations, Ranjita was instructed to go home as her hostel would be closed for puja holidays. She knew that if she went home, her parents would force her to get married. So she requested the School Headmistress through the Hostel Superintendent to allow her to stay back in the hostel or else she would be married to a drunkard forcefully by her parents. Ranjita raised her voice against the decision of her parents and expressed her willingness to continue her education. The issue was brought to the knowledge of the Collector who ordered an enquiry in the matter. Officials from the Child Protection Unit and Child Welfare Committee were rushed to Ranjita's school and home. The team rescued Ranjita from the hostel and two of her sisters from their home. Her sisters were never enrolled in the school and needed care and protection. By the order of the Child Welfare Committee, all three of them were placed in a Children's Home to enable them to continue their studies, without harassment from their parents. Their parents were counselled on the evils of child marriage.
This courageous & fearless act of Ranjita Majhi sets an example for other girls of society to raise voice against such social evils still prevalent.

The National Bravery Award Scheme was initiated by the Indian Council for Child Welfare in 1957 to give due recognition to the children who distinguish themselves by performing outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service and to inspire other children to emulate their example.
The ICCW National Bravery Awards is a fitting recognition and appreciation of noble traits in our children to inspire and steer them in the right direction.
This is the 62nd year of the ICCW National Bravery Awards.
Each year for over the past six decades, alongside those who have fought for our country, these brave children of our motherland have given ICCW this honour to celebrate this joyous day. Our young children are the focus of our hope, our link to the future. Their will defied fear. Their sense of duty threw the gauntlet to fate.
The awardees receive a medal, certificate and cash. We reward their bravery acts, to inculcate in them a sense of self-worth. They become the role-models for their peers to serve, strive and persevere in the face of adversity and danger. Each one of our 21 Awardees is a personification of remarkable courage.
Today we salute children who in trying to save others risked everything including life.
Eligible awardees will be granted financial assistance until they complete their
schooling through donations from philanthropists. In addition, ICCW provides financial assistance under its Sponsorship Scheme to those undertaking professional courses. For the others, this assistance is provided till they complete their graduation.
The ICCW National Bravery Award programme has grown exponentially over the years. ICCW has since 1957 awarded 984 awardees: 693 boys and 291 girls.
