Overview
BGSU Pre-College Summer Academic & Youth Programs are looking for energetic BGSU Undergraduate
& Graduate Students interested in serving as Camp Counselors and mentors to Pre-College Youth
participating in one or several summer camps this summer. Camp Counselors will supervise Pre-College
students during off camp times such as meals, evening programs, special events and field trips to ensure
camp participants have a safe and rewarding experience while at BGSU.
UGeneral Job Description
Primary responsibilities will be to provide supervision for campers outside of class/lab/lecture times and
ensure their safety and well-being during program transitional periods (walking to meals, evening
activities and curfew night checks). Counselors are expected to serve as leaders, care-takers and role
models throughout the program communicating directly with the camp director and Summer Academic &
Youth Program Coordinator in the event of an emergency.
UDuties & Responsibilities:
The following is a list of typical responsibilities, but this is not an exhausted list:
• Provide the highest level of customer service and ethical decision making
• Serve as an ambassador/recruiter for Bowling Green State University
• Serve on-call (overnight in assigned buildings)
• Work check-in and check-out of camp
• Attend mandatory training sessions and staff meetings
• Help with planning and lead afternoon and evening recreational/social activities for
campers during assigned camps
• Follow and reinforce all BGSU Policies and camp policies as outlined.• Other duties as assigned (i.e. lifting, carrying/moving luggage, boxes, etc.)
• Counselors will have designated periods of time off during the camp. This time will be
arranged by the counselor and camp staff.
UQualificationsU: All candidates must have completed at least one year of college or university education and must have an
established record of professional and personal responsibility and Upass state and federal background checksU.
Counselors must enjoy spending structured and unstructured time with Pre-College youth; have the ability
to work cooperatively with the camp staff; Experience with ages 11-17 is preferred, as is previous camp
counselor or residential advisor experience.

Important Notes:
Due to the position responsibilities and the ability of earning maximum hours students are not
permitted to work in additional BGSU departments while working as a full-term summer camp
counselor. Counselors wishing to work for individual camps only (Forensic Science, Media &
Broadcasting etc, may hold additional BGSU Appointments with prior approval from the Summer
Academic Youth Program Coordinator as long as work hours do not meet or exceed the maximum
number of approved hours for the week.

UCamp Counselors (Residential):
Must follow all guidelines, policies and procedures found in BGSU Programs & Events
with minors policy
May not have overnight guests during program camp dates
Counselors of legal tobacco use and drinking age are prohibited from using any tobacco
substances or drinking alcoholic beverages during the program.
Pay Between $8.45 - $14:
PCamp counselors will have the opportunity to earn up to 40 hours a week during camp programs and
camp operational hours at a beginning rate of $8.45. These hours include program training, program
facilitation, evening chaperone responsibilities and final camp clean up. Program Schedules will be
determined during training and orientation. Rate may increase with expertise, certification, previous
experience, education level.
Residential Counselors are required to live on campus in an assigned location as part of the program
to serve as the residential camp counselor/chaperone for campers living in the halls.
Residential camp counselors will be provided with a single for the dates of the participating camp.
The Residential Counselor will also receive all meals that are provided during the time of the camp.
When camps are not in session, the camp counselor shall be responsible for all meals and lodging.
Special arrangements may be considered allowing summer camp counselors the ability to reside on
campus during the weekends between camps at the cost of the individual.
For BGSU Students living on campus during the 2017 summer semester you will be required to
temporarily live in the assigned single associated with the program while the camp is in session.
Typical Week Schedule
Each Program/Camp will follow a standard schedule with most camp counselor
responsibilities occurring between 3:00 PM – 11:00 PM and from 7:00 AM – 8:00 AM.
While supervision of youth participants on campus from one event to the next is mandatory
these shifts will be managed by rotating counselors throughout the day allowing counselors
to have designated down time.
Summer Academic & Youth Program Events
Please note – no former experience in the academic field is necessary to apply. For example
if you are a music major but would like to work with the forensic science camp you may.
Housing/Meals and additional work hours are not provided between programs
Summer Camp Counselor Residential Position: May 30th – July 31st
Must attend Resident Counselor Training and Orientation: May 30th – ½ day on June 1st.U
