Beyond the rulesA guide to accompany citizens and local businesses
in waste disposal operations.
Waste Recycling Booklet
It is many years now that our province has implemented the door-
to-door waste collection scheme, reaching ambitious percentages
of recycling, very close to those indicated by national and European
legislation.
The culture of our land in terms of waste has reached an elevated
level of competence, changing the approach to the environmental
sustainability, which is the only way for the world’s future.
The new challenge? A step forward in our lifestyle,
the demolition of waste, waste reduction at source, reuse,
and a less polluting consumerism.
This guide will therefore accompany citizens and businesses in its
waste disposal operations in order to avoid common mistakes, provide
more information on what happens to our waste and help improve the
quality of all our lives.

ORGANIC WASTEOrganic waste consists of more than 20% of the waste produced by a family.
The best solution for its treatment is composting: the compost is a usable
material like fertilizer in agriculture and floriculture. Collecting organic waste
with the not recyclable fractions would put us in the condition to send it
to the landfill or the waste-to-energy plant, solutions environmentally and
economically unadvantageous
Organic waste constitutes only of organic materials
How to dispose it
Organic waste is collected on days specified on the waste recycling annual
calendar by using the Mater-Bi bags, buckets and brown pails.
Using non-biodegradable and compostable bags would defeat the
correct delivery, while bags of Mater-Bi, that derive from maize enter the
transformation cycle of organic waste and become compost.
What we do with it
Organic waste of Isontino is sent to the recycling plant of Moraro to become
compost, a rich nutrient material that is used as fertilizer in agriculture. A
part of our compost is mixed with peat and sand and used as topsoil for
plants of orchards, gardens and terraces. The compost that we produce
with the organic waste in our province, thanks to the attention of the citizens
at the time of its conferment (disposal), is certified and can be used in
organic farming.
isontina ambiente2 3
Good to know
All those who have a garden, a vegetable patch or at least a disposable piece
of land may choose to create home compost, using the compost heap, the
composters or alternatively, the compost pit.
Please...
...do not use non-biodegradable bags:
these do not degrade and creates a
waste in the disposal process that
generates additional costs. Do not mix
organic waste with other materials! It is
an oversight that comes at the expense
of the product and its certification.
What’s allowed
food preparation leftover foods from our plates fruit and vegetables wastes tea filters kitchen roll rotten foods (without the packaging of course...) egg shells small quantity of paper towels, flower cuts withered home plants (without vase) Mater-Bi plates, glasses and cutlery, (which are a good
alternative to plastic products)
What’s not allowed
animal litter nappies and sanitary towels all types of fats and oils cloth cuttings, greens and very bulky garden waste. These are
collected directly from the residence, by appointment by calling the toll free number 800 844 344
any other type of recyclable waste (paper, glass, plastic,...)

PAPER ANDCARDBOARDWaste recycling allows minimizing the production of material destined to
landfills and waste-to-energy plant, and at the same time constitutes of a source
of raw materials unknown until a few years ago.
The collection of paper and cardboard allows, after suitable processing, to
obtain a paste from which other paper and paperboards derive.
Paper and cardboard should be collected separately from other waste dividers:
it is very easy to distinguish them!
How to dispose it
Paper and cardboard collection is carried out on a door-to-door service: paper
materials must be placed in paper bags or cardboard boxes (in the case of
newspapers it is advisable to stack them and tie them with a string).
Do not use plastic bags! By doing so the plastic would blend with the paper and
defeat the purpose.
ONLY IN MONFALCONE......paper materials must be placed in the white buckets.
IN GORIZIA......Whoever prefers to personally manage paper and cardboard can go to the CONAI islands in person. Here you can weigh and record the weight using the tax code: at the end of the year the total of the conferment is converted into a discount applied directly to the bill. The CONAI islands are only available to the residents of the municipality of Gorizia. For the opening days and times of the CONAI islands: - Call toll free Isontina Ambiente 800844344; - Visit the website www.isontinambiente.it; - Contact the environmental office of the municipality of Gorizia.
isontina ambiente6 7
What we do with it Paper and cardboards are collected on days specified on the waste recycling annual calendar and brought to the Moraro sorting facility where they are offloaded on conveyor belts and, with the aid of an automatic blower, magnets and optical readers, proceed to the elimination of impurities; the final check is carried out by a series of operators. At the end of the selection process the material is pressed and packed in large bales, which in turn, are sent to the paper mills in accordance with the provisions of the COMIECO (www.comieco.it) system: here the paper is washed with generous amounts of hot water, filtered and purified. The paste thus obtained is mixed with virgin cellulose and used for the production of new paper and cardboard.
Good to know From an economic point of view recycling is certainly a less expensive incineration despite the process having its economic and energetic costs, and its environmental impact. Paper, in all its types, can undergo repeated use. Starting from the waste paper fiber, about 95% is turned into new paper. Compared to other productions, hence, the pulping provides big savings in energy, water and timber.
Please......Do not mix paper and cardboard with
other materials. The Consortium COMIECO gives the town halls (meaning to all of us) a compensation on the card that is disposed each year: the contribution
takes not only the quantity but also the quality into account. The presence of other
materials (plastics, glass..) progressively decreases the compensation amount given
by COMIECO.
What’s allowed
corrugated cardboard packaging shoe and detergent boxes cosmetic, detergent and medication boxes cardboard boxes for biscuits and food cardboard boxes for pasta and ric clean paper bags old diaries and calendars paperboards, photocopies, posters and various sheets advertisement leaflets, newspapers, magazines, comic books books, notebooks, sketchbooks cartons for drinks, milk and fruit juices (Tetrapaks)
What’s not allowed

PLASTIC PACKAGING AND METAL CANS
Plastic packaging and cans (steel and aluminum) are recyclable. If the cans
are easy to recognize (included, for example, are the cans of tomato puree,
tuna, beer and carbonated drink cans...), it can be difficult to understand
what to include in the plastic packaging category. These include all product
packaging we buy for contents such as vials, bottles, blisters and eggcups, but
also shopping bags and polystyrene trays.
From 1st May 2012 also plastic glasses and plates are among the products
included in this category.
How to dispose it
Plastic packaging and metal cans are collected by Isontina Ambiente on
a door-to-door service and delivered to the waste collection service in
translucent bags and their removal is assured on the days indicated on
the recycling collection calendar. Fruit boxes, large oil cans, voluminous
polystyrene objects should be placed beside the translucent bags for
collection by the waste collection operators.
isontina ambiente10 11
IN GORIZIA.....whoever prefers to personally manage plastic packaging and cans can go to the CONAI islands in person. Here you can weigh and record the weight using the tax code: at the end of the year the contribution total is converted into a discount applied directly to the bill.
What we do with it
The plastic waste and cans collected door-to-door are sent to the Moraro
plant for being selected in order to remove impurities and be separated by a
mechanical system consisting of conveyor belts combined with infrared optical
readers, magnets and jets of compressed air for homogeneous materials.
The selection is refined by a series of operators that intervene, if necessary,
manually at the end of the cycle.
Once separated, the different materials are pressed and packaged in large bales
that then make their way to the processing center.
The plastic waste is designated to plants identified by the Consortium COREPLA
(www.corepla.it); a sequence of operations of grinding, washing and
regranulation transform it into new raw material, ready to be fed into a new
production process.
The scrap metal in bales, however, is brought to the foundries identified by CIAL
(www.cial.it) and RICREA (www.consorzioricrea.org) where, after a quality
control of the material, it is pretreated at high temperatures to remove paint or
other foreign adhering substances; it is then liquefied in the melting furnaces
and transformed into ingots.
Good to know
Many objects of our daily life whose origin often escapes us can be created
from recycled plastic: sweaters and fleece blankets, carpets, flower pots, tubes,
but also street furniture; are all objects made of recycled plastic.
Aluminum possesses optimal characteristics for recycling: it can be reused
infinitively to give life to new products each time. Over 50% of aluminum
currently in use, in actual fact, comes from recycling and does not differ in any
sense from that obtained from the original material since key characteristics of
the metal remain unchanged.
isontina ambiente12 13
What’s allowed
all packaging marked with the initials PE, PP, PVC, PET, PS plastic bottles
(for mineral water, fruit juices, edible oils, milk, other drinks...) vials of cosmetics and cleaning products cling film plastic envelopes and bags egg containers pots of yogurt salami trays strapping plastic plates and cups with no obvious residues
(but not plastic cutlery that goes into the dry residue) polystyrene packaging containers of food, oil and preserves cans of beers and soft drinks bottle tops aluminum food trays small aluminum products
(e.g.: moka/mocha (coffee maker), milk saucepans) empty spray bottles
What’s not allowed
all plastic materials that are not packaging furnishings plastic cutlery toys CD, DVD and their cases Construction waste (scraps of pipes and cable holder) gardening equipment (watering cans, buckets...) tetrapak polystyrene sheets for construction
Please...…do not mix plastic and metal tins
with other materials, it would be detrimental to the contribution from
CONAI and the benefits derived from it. In addition we strongly
recommend you to only use bags provided by the system: any other
bags will not be collected.
isontina ambiente14 15
GLASS PACKAGINGThe recycling waste collection of glass packaging is easier to carry out
because glass is a material that is easily recognized by all.
Glass, on the other hand, has 5000 years of history: the most obvious and
familiar applications of glass are concentrated around food preservation:
bottles, cans and jars have always been considered the most suitable
packaging to preserve intact the taste of food and beverages.
Recycled glass has the same properties as the original: even after
the recycling process it maintains its characteristics of chemical and
biological inertia representing the most reliable material from the food
safety perspective.
How to dispose it
Glass produced by families and businesses should be disposed in the green
bell-shaped containers located on the roadsides of the province.
Bars, restaurants and taverns that have above average production of glass
bottles may request, delivery of dedicated blue bins through the toll free
number 800 844 344.
isontina ambiente16 17
IN GORIZIA...... whoever prefers to personally manage glass can go to the CONAI islands in person.
What we do with it
The glass is first sent to a storage facility from where it is transported to
glassworks indicated by the Consortium COREVE (www.coreve.it) where it
is crushed into uniform sized pieces and washed. Upon completion of this
operation, the crushed glass is melted at high temperatures and converted
into a new container.
What’s allowed
bottles glass cans small bottles and glass jars
What‘s not allowed
ceramic and porcelain light bulbs neon glass ceramic (Pyrex) mirrors glass from doors, windows and cars crystals spectacles glass block television and computer screens
Good to know
Glass is the optimum material for food and drink conservation because it is
natural, healthy and pure. Glass facilitates the best preservation of the
organoleptic characteristics of food, such as taste and smell; and in addition
it is also hygienic and safe, since it is inviolable and resistant to external
agents. Its transparency allows “visible” control of the quality and state
of preservation of the product. Glass is also by definition an ecological
material: it is not polluting because it is chemically inert and totally and
infinitely recyclable.
Please......Do not leave trash bags beside the glass collection unit: their recovery is mandatory and must be done to
ensure the decorum of the city. These extraordinary operations have a high
cost that affects all citizens.

DRY RESIDUALDry waste residue is the real waste the dreaded enemy of the environment
that we want to reduce to the maximum.
Fortunately, thanks to recent technological advances, there are less
and less materials that cannot be recovered and re-introduced in the
production cycles.
How to dispose it
Dry waste residue is collected by the door-to-door system throughout the
province with the aid of yellow bags (for families) or red (for businesses). In
the case of families that use large quantities of nappies, the municipality of
residence provides yellow bins on demand that are emptied on the same days
as the dry residue.
In Gorizia, Monfalcone and Ronchi dei Legionari the elderly or disabled are
provided with a green sack by the municipality of residence in which the
indistinct refuse can be disposed.
Good to know
The management of the dry residual waste is the most expensive also
because, unlike what happens with recyclable materials, no economic benefit
for its collection is recognized.
Its fate is the landfill (when available) or the waste-to-energy plant.
Notwithstanding the latter provides an important evolution of technology
isontina ambiente20 21
compared to older incinerators, it should be noted that the economic viability
of this type of plant passes through its ability to produce electricity for which,
however, both significant amount of material to burn, as well as the use of
supplementary fuels are always necessary.
Please...
...try to minimize the amount of dry
waste residue (within the rules of
waste recycling). Disposal of dry
waste residue is much more expensive
than the handling of recyclable waste.
What’s allowed
cigarette stubs nylon socks laminated paper CD and DVD cases nappies broken dishes plastic cutlery brushes and toothbrushes pens and markers disposable razors steel wools cups and porcelain plates light bulbs mixed objects that cannot be separated unusable rags clothes cotton buds
What’s not allowed
recyclable waste dangerous waste bulky and electronic waste inert materials and rubbles liquids car tyres and batteries incandescent materials
isontina ambiente22 23
Medicines are part of hazardous urban waste, otherwise known as RUP.
All expired drugs and no longer usable medication fall into the category: the correct disposal of expired drugs allows to minimize the risk of air pollution from the active ingredients of medicines. Due to the possible side effects it is advisable to use medicines only by prescription.Medicines can be disposed in the dedicated roadside containers located in all municipalities of the province, generally in the vicinity of pharmacies. From here they are taken to the waste-to-energy plant and incinerated on separate lines from other waste at temperatures between 950 and 1000 degrees. The combustion fumes are purified with filters and the ashes, which are not toxic, are deposited in authorized landfills. In some European countries the ash derived from combustion of drugs is allowed to be used as a substrate for the highway tarmac.
Good to knowSyringes should not be inserted in the medicine containers, they are eliminated in the
dry residue (recap the needle!): whoever uses a large quantity of syringes for personal
use may request the municipality of residence to provide a self-locking container that,
once full, is sealed and disposed with the dry residue.
BATTERIES MEDICINES
Batteries are part of the hazardous urban waste, also called RUP.
Batteries cannot be disposed off with other materials because they contain toxic substances such as mercury and cadmium, dangerous to the environment and in particular to aquifers.Given their dangerousness, at the time of purchase it is advisable to prefer rechargeable batteries that can be reused up to 1000 times. Batteries are disposed in the dedicated roadside containers located in all municipalities of the province of Gorizia.Batteries and expired rechargeable batteries are treated by specialized plants where, both the metals that are contained within them as well as the different type of materials that constitute their casing are recovered with industrial ad hoc treatments.
Good to knowCar batteries, despite having similar characteristics, should be delivered to the
Municipal Waste Collection Centers or handed in to the store where the new battery is
bought: let’s not leave them by the roadside or beside the bins for dead batteries!
isontina ambiente24 25
COLLECTIONOF BULKY WASTEThe bulky waste includes consumer durables such as appliances, furniture,
box springs, mattresses, and, more in general, all those materials that in size
and characteristics, cannot be disposed in regular waste collection.
Among the bulky waste, in addition, there are some that contain toxic
materials (such as lead and mercury) and which, if not properly treated,
cause serious damage to the environment.
How to dispose them
To dispose off bulky waste, citizens have two methods: the direct disposal to
the collection center of your municipality of residence or, in municipalities
where home collection is active, that can be requested by calling the Toll Free
number 800 844 344.
Good to know
In the bulky category also included are the WEEE Waste Electrical and
Electronic Equipment that Isontina Ambiente manages under the agreement
signed with the WEEE Coordination Centre. Thanks to this agreement now
even those who sell appliances can take advantage of this public service
to dispose the old ones taken in from a private citizen who purchases new
equipment (system “1 on 1”) or who simply brings in their old WEEE that they
do not intend to replace (system “1 on 0”).
What’s allowed
unused furniture sofas wardrobes beds tables chairs armchairs mattresses large plastic objects demijohns
bowls and trays shutters and blinds tyres fitted carpet and linoleum electrical and electronic equipment bathroom sanitary ware oys plastic objects
of large dimension
inert materials plasterboard tar paper rock wool
What’s not allowed
earth paper and cardboards floor and ceramic wall tiles stones
Please...
...do not leave your bulky waste on the roadside, beside the glass collection
containers or on the edge of forests and natural areas. It is an act of
unjustified incivility because all municipalities have access to a collection
center and, in most cases, also a home collection service.
Abandoning WEEE also creates an environmental pollution risk because these
disperse into the ecosystem substances harmful to the environment.
isontina ambiente26 27
Greens and branches are those wastes that are normally produced as a result of mowing and pruning shrubs and trees of the gardens and orchards: it consists of materials whose quantities are related to the cycle of the seasons.Greens and twigs can be disposed directly by the citizens to the Waste Collection Centers of the municipality of residence. In many municipalities of Isonzo a home collection service is also available of which you can benefit from by booking (toll-free number 800 844 344).
In some areas you can deposit your green waste in roadside buckets. The mowing and pruning should be taken in bulk, in bags or possibly tied in bundles.
Good to knowThe greens and the branches are sent to the composting plant of Moraro: the right
mix of organic materials necessary to obtain a quality compost requires, in fact,
that a certain amount of branches and small pieces of wood are added to the wet
waste. The prepared will have the right consistency, not too dry or too wet and
will be able to act as a structural material to facilitate the passage of air that will
promote the composting process.
Clothes and used shoes, but in good condition, can be useful to those who cannot afford to buy apparel. The practice of making available to others what you no longer use is a concrete way to combine the growing sensitivity and predisposition towards behaviors that minimize waste and squander.
Anyone wishing to give away clothes that are no longer used but are still in good condition may insert them in the yellow containers of Caritas, very common in the municipalities of our province: in the same containers even blankets, bags, shoes (which are not mismatched!), hats may be inserted...
Unusable garments may be disposed off with dry waste residue (in the yellow bag!!!)
Good to knowThe garments are taken from dedicated containers and taken to storage centers of
the cooperatives in charge of carrying out the service. From here garments are sold
to companies operating in the sector and selected appropriate authorized facilities.
On average, 68% of clothing is intended for re-use, 25% is subject to recycling of
raw materials and 7% is disposed off because they are no longer usable.
COLLECTION OF GREENS AND BRANCHES
USED CLOTHING
isontina ambiente28 29
OTHER WASTES
VEGETABLE OIL
Despite being used for cooking food, vegetable oils are not to be poured into toilets
or sinks to be disposed through the town sewer system because they damage the
purifiers’ filters. Vegetable oils that are leftover from frying (or exhausted oils) must be
recovered because they can be reused as fuel or as fat fraction for the production of
soaps, detergents and cosmetics.
Used oil must be brought to the Waste Collection Centers preferably using plastic
containers: from here they are sent to processing and recovery plants indicated by
CONOE, the National Consortium Exhausted Oils, and listed on the site www.conoe.it.
MINERAL OIL
Mineral oils are used to lubricate car engines, boats and motorcycles: once
it loses its characteristics, the engine oil must be replaced. This operation,
which is often accompanied by the need to dispose of the can and the
filter, must be done with great care because lubricating oil is particularly
hazardous and harmful to the environment. The disposal of exhausted mineral
oil passes through the Waste Collection Centers, where it must be delivered
in dedicated containers: from here the oil is sent into treatment centers.
Depending on the residual characteristics, which are present, the mineral oil
is regenerated, reused as a fuel or, when unusable, thermally destroyed.
INERTS
Inert materials are the residues of the demolition and construction works: Isontina
Ambiente can manage these materials only when they come from households and in
limited quantities (therefore only after DIY “do it yourself” works).
The recycled inert from demolition and construction acquire value because they can
be reused for road foundations, superstructures, fills, and as raw material
for construction.
isontina ambiente30 31
The door-to-door recycling waste collection implies that the disposal of waste should be carried out in compliance with a series of set rules. Such rules, even though may seem unnecessary, actually have a purpose to be followed and respected by all.
The containers of the waste collection and their content To carry out recycling waste collection only containers authorized and provided by the system are to be used. As for the bags, the use of those not complying, complicates the activity of the operators involved in the waste collection very much: by using bags of Isontina Ambiente the recognisability of the content facilitates their removal. The black bags do not allow to intuitively guess what’s inside them and therefore cannot be collected to avoid the risk of contaminating the waste load with any materials not conformed to the kind of collection taking place. Bags not complying will be marked with an orange sticker and left in the same position in which, the owner deposited them.
The days and timings of waste collectionThe waste must be out in the evening of the day before scheduled for their removal: it is not possible to collect plastic if that day is dedicated to the removal of paper and vice versa because the vehicle that is used contains only paper or plastic.
It is important that the refusal is left on public ground (we enter private property only when necessary and in the presence of a releasing document) already on the previous evening (before 24.00 hrs). Our activity starts very early, to minimize bottlenecks, during the most congested hours of the morning traffic, the risk of traffic jams that our vehicles could cause during their operational stops. Only the collection of glass is performed at times so as to ensure the public quiet (especially in the summer when the windows are open) to avoid disturbing the citizens residing in the vicinity of the bell-shaped collection containers. Our vehicles are equipped with GPS system that keeps track of their entire route, memorizing the exact instant when they make operational stops if you were to experience the missed passing on your own street reconstructing the event will be very easy. If these simple rules are not followed we cannot proceed with the removal of waste: the uncollected waste is always marked with an orange sticker.
Good to knowTo minimize the inconvenience of residents of condominiums and businesses, the waste collection system provides that additional containers may be requested: this need must be reported to our toll free number 800 844 344. Each request is followed by an inspection of our employees who carry out case-by-case evaluation for the eligibility of the request in order to eventually implement it.
Please......respect the rules of the waste collection: by observing them you will make your contribution to increase recycling waste collection and to reduce wastes that are the main cause of climate change on our planet by putting the quality of future life at risk.
THE RULESOF WASTE COLLECTION
isontina ambiente32 33
The Collection Centers are equipped and guarded areas where recyclable materials, bulky waste and some types of hazardous waste from households are collected.
The Collection Centers are available to residents in the municipalities of the Isonzo district, with some limitations defined by the municipal regulations regarding the assimilation of waste, even of non-domestic users of the territory. To access Collection centers, it is necessary that domestic users present themselves at the entrance equipped with an identification document.
For non-domestic users the manager of the center will record the company name, VAT number, registration plate of the vehicle used, the type and quantity of materials conferred. These utilities may confer all recoverable materials, differentiated in the dedicated containers provided, given that they are considered urban waste with regard to their quality and quantity. They cannot give specific waste produced by their activities because, being originated by the production process of the companies, they are special and should be disposed off by specialist companies.
COLLECTIONCENTRES The distributors, installers and RAEE service centers can confer their
materials, provided with appropriate documentation and authorization. Professional WEEE like fridge showcases, industrial washing machines, etc. cannot be conferred in the collection centers.
Each user will have to carry out the transportation of various types of refuse with their own means, respect their turn and follow the instructions of staff safeguarding the center. Users have to arrive with the waste already differentiated, to facilitate the checks by the staff.
It is forbidden
to take the waste to the Collection Center in the classic blacks bags or bags in which it is not possible to check the contents
to use the container of bulky waste to confer not differentiated wastes
to carry out sorting of waste already present to deposit materials outside the dedicated containers to deposit materials outside Collection Center to transport any waste away from the Collection Centre to always put in place actions prohibited by the safeguarding
personnel
The disposal of any object made of asbestos or any waste containing asbestos is strictly forbidden to all.
