A New York State Education Department initiative, PUSH is a network of Harlem-based and city organizations. These partnerships facilitate referrals between agencies, ensuring that clients have access to education and other crucial resources that they need, such as housing and healthcare. Since its opening, over 1,200 community members and students have visited the Family Welcome Center at the Oberia Dempsey Center where PUSH is located. Reion Evans, the Community Partnership Coordinator, says that PUSH has been a great success, citing how the comprehensive approach to caring for our students and others seeking help will continue to result in enhancing the quality of life for those living within and beyond the Harlem community. In order to sustain PUSH, Literacy Partners has embarked on an ambitious fundraising campaign to secure multiyear funding. We will be seeking $250,000 over four years for a total of $1 million to ensure that the program continues to thrive. FALL 2012

Page 2: Beyond the Page - Fall 2012

This year at the Student and Volunteer Celebration on June 21st, two outstanding volunteers were recognized for their commitment to Literacy Partners’ mission and our students. The Susan A. McLean Educator of the Year award was given to Brian Potash, a tutor whose dedication to adult literacy greatly contributes to the lives of our students with his enthusiastic and consistent support of our Financial Literacy series. This award was created to honor our former Executive Director, Susan A. McLean, for her work in creating innovative programs such as our Financial Literacy curriculum for all levels of students, the GED Academy and PUSH Literacy Zone.

The Harry Reingold Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Margaret Sheehan, who has devoted over 30 years to volunteering with LP. She has consistently gone above and beyond in supporting our students’ needs much like the former longtime volunteer, Harry Reingold. His belief in the importance of volunteering was celebrated with a private event co-hosted by his wife, Carmel Berman Reingold. The intimate evening was attended by friends and family who respected and applauded Harry’s dedication to LP in the desire to praise his memory and continue his legacy.

Literacy Partners truly appreciates our volunteers and thanks each and every one of you for your support of our mission and the great impact you have on our students’ lives.

Student Story

Literacy Partners has a new LOOK!

Ismael NegrilloQueens resident Ismael Negrillo graduated from public high school with his special education diploma in 2002, and after working a variety of jobs, he decided he wanted something more. He wanted to get his GED and go to college. “This is my life right here. I need this education.”

Now, a student in the Pre-GED class at Henry Street Settlement, Ismael says, “I love all the teachers because they keep lessons relevant to current events.” When he’s not in school or working toward his GED, Ismael participates in dance groups and volunteers with other community organizations.

Ismael has many aspirations. At one point, he wanted to join the army. He says he would also love to work for the MTA, study massage therapy or become a DJ. Whatever career path he chooses, attaining his GED is the gateway to achieving his dreams, and LP is glad to help. “I could be everything all at once, but I have to start from scratch.”

Over the summer, the Technology Committee undertook a rebranding effort to give Literacy Partners a new look. This rebranding effort included creating a new logo and website. Grateful appreciation goes to Dow Jones and Open Road Media for endless hours of pro bono consultation and guidance. Please visit www.literacypartners.org to see all that’s new!

National Adult Education and Family Literacy Week Literacy Partners raised awareness of adult and family literacy during NAEFLW (September 10–16) and celebrated with a great slate of events.

Our students started their first week of classes and jumped right into our essay contest, Writing Beyond the Page.

The one-year anniversary of our PUSH Literacy Zone was celebrated with a private book-signing event at Red Rooster Harlem. Many thanks to award-winning chef and best-selling author, Marcus Samuelsson, and Random House for generously supporting PUSH.

Last but certainly not least, Literacy Partners staff bowled for the cause with the 1st Annual LP Bowl for Literacy Bowlathon.

It was a wonderful week, and we appreciate the support of LP’s Board Members, staff, volunteers, students and donors.
