    The 2016 Actuarial Seminar: Motor Insurance is an event specially

    designed for actuaries and other general insurance professionals to stay

    abreast of current motor insurance updates / issues affecting the

    insurance industry. It is co-organized by the Actuarial Society of Malaysia,

    the Casualty Actuarial Society, and the Actuaries Institute of Australia.

    This event is also co-sponsored by the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries.

    Aimed at a wide range of audiences, there will be presentations covering

    both actuarial and non-actuarial discussions, in the course of the two-day

    seminar. This years event promises speakers with regional and

    international experience, panel discussions, as well as video

    presentations, just to name a few. So join us in this upcoming event not

    to be missed for general insurance professionals!

    Session 2 Building the Actuarial Foundations for Motor InsurancePricingJio Young will present the actuarial pricing control cycle and discussthese elements as Malaysian companies prepare for the detariffmarket. He will address issues such as: In what way can we ensureour price level appropriate to support our profitability objectives?What are the broad patterns of profitability across this book ofbusiness? What are the important macro trends that will influenceour future profitability? This session will explore the key issues andactuarial approaches, tools and information that need to underlieresponses to these types of management questions.

    Gary will then touch on the technical pricing aspects to comply withBNMs guidelines on the Phased Liberalization, particularly on itemsthat the actuarial industry must take cognizance of. In hispresentation, he will cover pricing aspects that are commonly askedby insurers as the market prepares for the liberalization of tariffrates.

    Session 3 Building Trust and Driving Confidence throughTransparent Actuarial CommunicationFormer chief actuary of Insurance Corporation of British Columbia(ICBC), Camille Minogue will tell of the most noteworthy actuarialchallenges during her time with this Canadian company. Therequirement that ICBC operate with openness and transparency hasimplications for what actuarial methods can be used and still beunderstood; it also means that the actuarial work product issubjected to regular public scrutiny. Ms. Minogue will share herexplanations, grounded in accepted actuarial practice that helped todevelop relationships of trust and credibility with companymanagement, the regulator, and interested members of the public.

This will not be a detailed technical session, but rather willfocus our attention on the big picture aspects of the new tools andcapabilities that are being put to use in developing marketing,underwriting, and pricing strategies.

    Session 6 Reinsurance in Support of a Motor Insurance StrategyThis presentation will focus on reinsurance and the possibleapplication of structured solutions for motor insurance in Malaysia.We will discuss examples of motor reinsurance from Asia to showrelevance to both global and local interests. We will set out casestudies which will illustrate scenarios in which an insurer may prefervarious reinsurance solutions based on its business and strategies.

    Session 7 The Future of Motor Insurance: Autonomous Vehicles,Car-Sharing, and Big DataThe technologies that will enable self-driving cars are arriving at afast pace. Matt Moore from the Highway Loss Data Institute in theU.S. will share fascinating research and insights illuminating theevolution of the autonomous vehicle from driver-assist and crash-avoidance technologies to fully self-driving cars. He will also discussprojections for the fitment of these systems in the U.S. vehicle fleetand a look on the on road loss experience of the Tesla Model S.

    The transition to roads filled with a blend of traditional cars andautomated vehicles is but one of the interesting and challengingshifts for actuaries. Rob Malattia from Willis Towers Watson willprovide us with insights into the profound effects that autonomousvehicle technology will likely have on the motor insurance industry inthe future. Others changes that are closer at hand include theemergence of Uber and other forms of car-sharing programs; the richflow of data from telematics; and usage-based insurance. Rob willdiscuss the important role of actuaries in making sense of thesechanges, and in moving the insurance industry into the future.

    Session 9 Behavioral Economics and Marketplace DynamicsWith the shift from tariffs to competitive pricing, pure actuarialpricing, i.e., cost-based pricing, will be a mere starting point forcompanies in price setting. The behavioral economics of themarketplace can be expected to generate deviations from purepricing. Not only will consumer attributes, such as price sensitivityand demographic factors, become influential in determining finalprice, but behaviors of competing companies will factor in aswell. The panelists will share their experiences working in dynamiccompetitive marketplaces, including discussion of how actuaries playan important and expanded role.

    Yoon is the Director of Insurance Development at Bank NegaraMalaysia. He oversees the formulation of strategies and policies todevelop the insurance sector in Malaysia.Prior to this role, Yoon was an Actuary in the Insurance & TakafulSupervision Department of Bank Negara Malaysia. His previous roleincluded the review of actuarial valuation, ICAAP practices and newproduct submissions in supporting the supervisory assessment ofthe financial strength and conduct of insurers and takaful operators.He also supported policy development in the Bank and had beeninvolved in RBC, ICAAP and Financial Sector Blueprint.Yoon is a Fellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries and Fellowof the Actuarial Society of Malaysia.

    Jio Young is the Head of Regional General Actuarial Pricing withEtiqa Insurance. He has more than 20 years of actuarial workingexperience in insurance industry, and done general insuranceactuarial work in 11 of Asia Pacific countries.

    Jio Young has extensive experience in pricing, reserving, modellingand portfolio management. He has hands-on experience onstatutory valuation, stress testing, full price optimization andprovides pricing strategies and insights to business. Jio Young is aFellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and a business graduatefrom Nanyang Technological University.

    Gary is a Partner of JPWALL, based in Malaysia, and first joined thefirm in 2008. He left in 2014 to take up a Chief Actuary role in one ofthe largest general insurers in Malaysia, before making a decision toreturn to JPWALL 15 months later. With over 15 years of industryexperience, he has been involved in all areas of general insuranceactuarial work such as the traditional pricing, capital and valuationfunctions as well as less common areas such as risk, reinsurance andM&A's. Gary graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in ActuarialScience and is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and also aFellow of the Society of Actuaries. He is currently the President-Elect of the Actuarial Society of Malaysia.

    Camille is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society and an affiliatemember of the Canadian Institute of Actuaries with over 25 years ofactuarial experience. She has held positions as chief actuary in boththe US and Canada, most recently at Insurance Corporation of BC,Canada's largest automobile insurance company. She is also anadjunct professor at Simon Fraser University in British Columbia,where she teaches a course in property and casualty insurance.Previous to her actuarial career, she earned a PhD in mathematicsfrom Washington State University. Camille is currently on hiatusfrom her actuarial career in order to pursue her long-held desire tostudy the law. She currently serves on the CAS Board of Directors.

    Rob Malattia joined Willis Towers Watson as the Director of Non-Life Insurance Risk Consulting in South East Asia in April 2013; priorto joining Willis Towers Watson Rob worked in senior actuarial rolesfor two primary global insurance companies in London and Italy. Hebrings more than 15 years of experience in the insurance industryand has provided support and consultancy services to insurancecompanies in more than 20 countries worldwide. Robs key area ofspecialism is ratemaking, portfolio management, product designand Usage Based Insurance. Rob is a Fellow of the Institute andFaculty of Actuaries UK, a Fellow of the Singapore Actuarial Society,and holds a Masters degree in Insurance and Risk Management.

    David Whittle is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries of Australiaand a member of that Institute's General Insurance PracticeCommittee. David has worked in a variety of actuarial and businessroles in general insurance, encompassing pricing, reserving andreinsurance management, in both corporate and consultingsettings. In his current role as Chief Reserving Actuary, Asia-Pacific,for the Zurich Group, David's responsibilities cover nine countriesand he leads a team of 25 reserving actuaries across theregion. David was previously the Chief Actuary for Zurich Australiaand prior to that, a partner of KPMG Australia and the head ofproduct and pricing at Allianz Australia. David is married with twoteenage children and is an avid follower of cricket and most kinds offootball.

    Mr. Jiang is a principal and consulting actuary with the MillimanShanghai P&C and health practice. He joined the firm in 2008 afterthree years with Ping An Insurance Company in China. He hasdetailed knowledge of the general insurance industry in China, andhas worked extensively on the pricing of personal lines and selectedcommercial property lines of business. He was a key member of thecommittee responsible for determining the motor insurancepremium rates on behalf of the industry in China. Guanjun is aFellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society, and holds a Mastersdegree in Financial Mathematics from Florida State University in theUnited States.

    William is the Senior Vice President, ERM of MSIG Asia, based inSingapore and prior to his current role, William was leading theregional actuarial function. William has seventeen years ofinsurance experience from different insurance markets around Asia-Pacific. His experience includes development and implementationof ERM framework, insurance liability valuation, technical premiumrating, mergers and acquisitions and insurance analytics. Williamearned a bachelor's degree in Actuarial Studies at MacquarieUniversity in Sydney, Australia and an MBA with Honors at theUniversity of Chicago Booth School of Business from Chicago, USA.When not working, William enjoys spending time with his family,running and travelling around the world!

    Bob Conger serves as International Ambassador for the CasualtyActuarial Society (CAS), as Chair of the new General InsuranceCommittee of the International Actuarial Association, and innumerous other volunteer roles in the actuarial profession. Bob is apast President of CAS; and he is a past Board member of CAS, of theAmerican Academy of Actuaries, and of The Actuarial Foundation inthe US. Bob is an actuarial consultant with Willis Towers Watson;he has been with the firm (and its predecessor organizations) since1986. His consulting practice focuses on assisting clients with abroad spectrum of actuarial, financial, operational, and strategicissues, particularly in the field of workers compensation.

    Adam is an Executive Director at Ernst & Young, Singapore. Adamleads EY Usage Based Insurance practice. He has over 20 yearsexperience in Financial Services, Insurance and Technology marketsProfessional experience. Adam is one of few pioneers in the spaceof Usage Based Insurance, having thorough understanding andpractical experience of its commercial, technical, analytical andoperational aspects. He has led numerous initiatives in businesstransformation, state-of-the-art technology implementations,operations and integration. Adam has built and implemented a UBIand insurance innovation strategy for global insurers and developedpricing strategy based on telematics data.

    Andrew Heikes is currently Vice President at Guy Carpenter based inSingapore working in Analytics on primarily Southeast Asia andKorea. He is a member of the Casualty Actuarial Society and hasboth primary and reinsurance experience. Prior to joining GuyCarpenter, Andrew worked at State Farm in the US for 10 years.

    Justin Lee is currently Senior Vice President at Guy Carpenter basedin Kuala Lumpur. Prior to joining Guy Carpenter, Justin was based inLondon and spent 4 years with XL on the buying side and 9 years asa Casualty treaty underwriter mainly with Aspen Re.

    Matt Moore is vice president of the Highway Loss Data Institute,where he oversees much of HLDI's research. He also supervises lossdata processing, collection of vehicle information and data servicesfor member companies.Mr. Moore joined HLDI in 1999 as a programmer. He is the authorof numerous research papers published by HLDI on topics such ascrash avoidance technologies, vehicle horsepower, motorcycles anddistracted driving.Before coming to HLDI, Mr. Moore worked in higher education,conducting institutional research, designing data systems andcreating web sites. He holds an M.B.A. and a bachelor's degree fromSaint Francis University in Pennsylvania.

    Alex Kimura was appointed as Chief Strategy Officer of Aviva Asia inSeptember 2014. His current responsibilities include Strategy,Corporate Development and Mergers and Acquisitions, Analyticsand Transformation for Asia. Prior to Aviva, he was with the AXAGroup since 2000; he was first appointed as Chief Operating Officerof AXA Japan and later oversaw the Asia Pacific region reporting tothe Group CEO. Before joining AXA, Alex was a Director at Bain &Company, a global management consulting firm; and he worked formany years in the investment banking industry at Morgan Stanley inAsia and US. He holds a MBA degree from Columbia University inFinance and International Business with Distinction.

    Roshan Perera is a Partner within NMGs Actuarial ConsultingSolutions and has over 16 years' technical and businessdevelopment experience. He is a specialist in frontier, emerging,and developing markets in Asia and offers strategic/technicalsupport to companies operating within these jurisdictions. Roshanhas a broad range of technical skills in the insurance space includingreserving, pricing, reinsurance structuring, financial modelling, andstrategy development. His most recent projects have involved M&Aadvisory services for a number of recent transactions in the regionand the solvency framework development in the Philippines.

    Steven is a Partner of JPWALL, based in Malaysia, and specializes inboth life-insurance and general insurance.In Life Insurance, Steven is experienced in product pricing anddesign, liability valuation, Appraisal valuation, asset and liabilitymanagement, financial forecast and capital management. He hasbeen both an Appointed Actuary of a life company and the VicePresident & Head of Product Management and Profit Centres.In General Insurance, Steven has been the Chief Actuary andGeneral Manager of the largest general insurer in Malaysia as wellas the Malaysian Country Manager of a consulting firm.Steven graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics, majoringin Actuarial Science, holds a Masters of Applied Finance and is aFellow of the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries (UK) as well as theActuarial Societies of Malaysia and Singapore.
