Beyond Question - SRSCreate a roster for each class by entering the students' information or by importing

it from an existing file. Once the roster is created, you can record student's grades and attendance.

Develop a lesson for the class to compliment the current subject matter. Whether using resources from textbook publishers or using the built-in editor, lessons can be prepared quickly.

Present a lesson to the class that introduces the subject matter, provides a few examples or discussion, and then confirms the students' understanding by asking a few questions.

Collect student responses as they use their remotes. Students that have answered will see their number box turn green on the screen. Changes flash yellow, then back to green.

Display the results graph to provide immediate feedback to the class. Students build confidence by knowing they answered correctly. Incorrect answers can be identified and corrected.

Review the lesson/quiz summary to identify trends, student progress, and scores. An overall class average is provided to assist in analyzing student performance verses the class.

Use the instructor remote to control every aspect of the lesson from anywhere in the room. Floating amongst the students allows monitoring of student progress and providing assistance if needed.

The basic process of using Beyond Question is to:

How to incorporate Beyond Question into your curriculum?• Perform anonymous surveys to get students' honest opinions on

topics that might be difficult to discuss. Shy students feel empowered because they can freely participate without concern for embarrassment. The more teachers have their finger on the pulse of the class, the better they can teach the students.

• Start your class by asking three to five questions to determine if the students did their homework. Once this is done a few times, the students will realize they have to do their work. You might also use this approach to review a previous lesson which is the basis of a new topic.

• Keep students focused and on task during the lesson, use Beyond Question to ask a couple of quick review questions every 10 -15 minutes. The students will remain alert and attentive because they know questions will be asked. When wrapping up the lesson, present a few questions to make sure the students understood the material.

Page 11: Beyond Question November 2, 2010 Overhills Middle School Beverly Pollock, Technology Facilitator & Jeremy Glasson, Media Coordinator Western Harnett High

• Ask verbal questions and have the students respond with their remotes. The results can be immediately displayed to the class and discussed further if needed. Another option would be to write questions on the board or display a transparency on an overhead projector.

• Prepare a few questions in advance of the class and insert them into the lesson to make sure the students are following along and understand the material. By using the word processing capabilities within Beyond Question, you can create questions with objective answers. You can also define an answer key and assign point values to enable automatic scoring.

• If you have electronic versions of quizzes and tests, Beyond Question can open the file and create individual questions. If you add an answer key you can give the test, grade it, and save it to your gradebook or open it in Excel for further analysis.

• One of the most powerful methods of using Beyond Question is to automatically open and present lessons in PowerPoint. Many textbook publishers and subject matter websites have content that you can download to your computer and directly present to your class. This provides the ability to deliver colorful, creative, and engaging lessons that will keep the student's attention.

Sample Uses of Beyond Question: Elementary School

Skill: Math - Division with remaindersMethod: Prepare a series of PowerPoint slides to drill the students. You might want

to use the first two questions as examples and walk the class though them. Thereafter, have the students read each question and respond via their remotes. Review the questions on the graphs screen either individually or collectively at the end, explaining the ones that had errors. At the end of the week, a review quiz can be given and automatically graded.

Benefit: The teacher can have every student respond to every question and immediately know if the students understood the lesson. Additional study assignments can be given to those students that need more practice. Students know if they learned the material and immediately learn from the correction of mistakes.

Sample Uses of Beyond Question: Elementary School

Skill: Language Arts - Word RecognitionMethod: Daily - Develop exercises that drill the students on matching words with the

correct picture. Present 10 questions each displays a picture with four answers. Review each questions result after the students have responded to determine how many got the correct answer. Identify the correct answer and discuss if some students were incorrect.

Weekly - Give a 15 question review of the word list practiced during the week

Benefit: Students get more practice time on skills. Using a colorful presentation and interactive responses keeps the students interested and focused. Immediate review of the material allows the teacher to correct any misunderstandings and the students build confidence with their correct answers. The real-time feedback allows the teacher to spend more or less time on the skill depending on the student's level of mastery. Automatic grading minimizes teacher's workload.

Sample Uses of Beyond Question: Middle School

Skill: Language Arts - Words in ContextMethod: Using the weekly word list, develop a series of questions. Drill daily with

10 questions. Limit the amount of time for the students to respond to keep them focused. Review the responses on the graphs screen and discuss any significant errors. At the end of the week, provide a 25 question quiz using multiple-choice, true/false and/or matching formats. Save the auto-graded results to your preferred gradebook.

Benefit: Daily drills increase student knowledge and helps with retention. Students are motivated to respond quickly thereby improving their mental quickness. Anonymous result graph allows students to see how they are performing as compared to their classmates. The teacher can see how individual students are performing and develop study guides to assist those that need more practice.

Skill: Geography - Country IdentificationMethod: Prior to starting a new lesson, present two to three questions to determine if

the students read the chapter. Based on the feedback, you will know if they are prepared for the lesson, allowing you to move through the lesson at a normal pace. After 10-15 minutes, ask a couple of mid-lesson review questions about the material just covered. Based on the results, you can modify the pace of the lesson if necessary. At the end of the lesson, ask three to five review questions to make sure they understand the main points of the lesson and understand their next assignment.

Benefit:

Sample Uses of Beyond Question: Middle School

Teacher gets an easy way to verify that the students are prepared for class. Students do their homework and remain alert and focused because they know questions will be asked. Immediate review of the questions allows the teacher to correct any errors or misunderstandings and the students build confidence with their correct answers.

Sample Uses of Beyond Question: High School

Skill: TrigonometryMethod: Mathematics is a progressive subject area that continuously builds on

formulas, principles and rules. One way to use Beyond Question would be to create a series of questions that challenges the students to apply the appropriate rule to get the correct answer. Two or three times per week, present 5 -10 questions to verify that they understood the previous material and are prepared for the next step. Each question is allotted 30 seconds. Award participation points for correct answers. This method also could be used to begin a new lesson to refresh the core foundations on which the new material is based .

Benefit: Beyond Question allows the teacher to present ongoing reviews of the mathematical subject area, thereby increasing the student's competency and retention. The teacher will immediately know if the students are learning or struggling. Students will develop confidence in their knowledge and be better able to apply it to new subject areas.

Skill: Physical Science - Measurements of HeatMethod: Prepare a lesson in PowerPoint that includes two slides with questions

every 10 - 15 minutes. The questions can either review the main points of the last few slides or preview what you are about to teach. Survey type questions might be appropriate to get the students' opinions or baseline of knowledge prior to discussing a certain topic.

Benefit:

Sample Uses of Beyond Question: High School

The teacher will immediately know if the students are listening and understanding the material. Embedding questions into a lesson keeps the students alert because they know questions will show up every few minutes and the teacher will know if they are keeping up. Responding to the questions provides immediate feedback and students will know if they are falling behind. Additional practice or study assignments can be made based on the results.
