Courses designed in collaboration with business & industry...Many students choose to take these courses because they are interested in learning more about a particular sector or industry and as many of the courses have been designed in collaboration with industry, they can equip you with the skills and knowledge that employers are looking for. The qualifications offer a mix of theory and practice and can also include an element of work experience. There are no exams as they are assessed through coursework which suits students who do not perform well under exam pressure. Level 3 courses provide routes into higher education as well as employment.

Why should you take this course?The Art and Design BTEC Extended Diploma is an opportunity for students who wish to study a broad-based course leading to a specialism in Art and Design. It is a practical course supported by research into related historical and contemporary art and design movements. Students will develop their professional skills in preparation for a career in Art & Design. The course is ideal for students aiming to progress onto a Foundation or Higher National Diploma in Art and Design or fast track directly to degree level in a specialist area. ‘The course includes trips locally and abroad, as well as the opportunity to exhibit in prestigious local galleries.

Course contentStudents study for an 18 unit qualification over two years. All students will study 5 core units including Visual Recording; Ideas and Concepts; and Contextual Influences in Art & Design. Along with a further 13 units incorporating Fine Art; Graphic Design ; Textiles; Photography.

How will I be assessed?All units comprise a range of practical and written assignments which focus on the different skills needed to develop work in the four practical areas. All 18 units must be completed to achieve the qualification.

Are there any special expenses?This course is a practical Art & Design course and you will be expected to have the necessary equipment and resources. We provide basic materials for the duration of the course, however you will also need to buy sketchbooks, a portfolio, fabric for textiles and general or specialist art and design equipment.

Why should you take this course?This course gives you a deeper understanding of how children aged 0-8 years develop. You will develop a range of skills that will prepare you for employment or higher education in childcare or teaching.

Course content:The course will develop your understanding of children’s development, factors affecting development, the benefits of play, observation of children, health and wellbeing, the curriculum and planning activities.

How will I be assessed?Assessment is carried out through the production of portfolio tasks which will include assignments and project work along with evidence of practical assessment from placements and controlled assessments through case studies. Over the two years you will need to complete 800 hours of work placement in a variety of settings with children from 0-8 years old.

Are there any special expenses?Students will be expected to pay for their own transport to and from placement, a CRB check and uniform. There will be some visits which would incur travelling costs.

What could I do next?On successful completion you can progress straight into employment with a licence to practice or attend university to further your skills and knowledge. Subjects you could study: teaching, children’s nursing, social work or other related courses.

Are there any special expenses?Students will need to purchase sport kit at a cost of around £120 and students will be expected to wear this to all lessons.

What could I do next?BTEC Diplomas are valued by employers and higher education (universities and colleges). For the uniformed services you could go into a career such as the Police, Fire and Rescue service, the Armed Forces, Security or Customs and Excise.

Why should you take this course?Gain valuable insights into career structures of armed and emergency services, including visiting speakers and professionals to the college. In addition, there are trips arranged by the armed forces.

Course contentYou will develop practical and academic skills. The course is intended to prepare students for entry into the public services or Higher Education and enhance career prospects within the public sector. This is an 18 unit course which covers units ranging from leadership to outdoor adventure and crime to major incidents. In addition, you will study a community sports leader award, gain a water sports qualification and a first aid certificate.It is advisable to have a strong interest in the services and improving fitness.

How will I be assessed?There are no exams to pass. You will compile a portfolio of your assessments. There will be one written assignment per unit and other assessments such as observations, placement reports, photographic or video evidence, diary entries, group work etc. Grading is completed as pass, merit or distinction.

Are there any special expenses?Some activities with armed services are subsidised but there will be additional costs of approximately £115 for Watersports. This is in addition to a £75.00 student fee.There is a compulsory practical kit which is approximately £120. Students will be expected to wear this for all lessons. You will need good, supportive trainers for practical activities every day.

What could I do next?BTEC Diplomas are valued by employers and Universities. You could go directly to full time employment in the Armed Forces or to the Police or Fire Service on a part time basis.

The Big ClimBThe Big Climb was organised by the teacher of Outdoor Adventure, James

Boardman, and involved a number of students and staff. The challenge consisted of a vertical climb on the indoor climbing wall and was the

equivalent distance of a half marathon or 2 and a half of Mount Everest. The 2600 climbs began at 8am and lasted a gruelling 11 hours.

The purpose of the climb was to raise funds for The Oliver Curd Trust, a local charity providing fully equipped holiday accommodation to families

supporting children and young people in the UK, suffering from childhood cancer and other life threatening illnesses. A huge congratulations goes

out to all involved for completing this truly incredible challenge.

Royal maRines new ReCRuiTs...Two current students studying the Uniformed Service BTEC National Diploma at Bexhill 6th Form College have been proudly accepted into the Royal Marines with a ‘superior pass’, the highest level of entry for a new recruit.Darren Clark and Scott Hopkins have endured a gruelling application process which has taken almost a year to complete. This involved a number of written exams, fitness tests, medical examinations and interviews and was finalised with a 4 day intensive programme to complete the selection process. Both received confirmation of their place into the Marines following this process and were informed that only 1 in every 1000 applicants reach this stage.Both students worked together in their physical training and often used the College’s sports facilities outside of College hours in order to improve their fitness. Darren and Scott will soon move to the Lympstone Training Centre, in East Devon, to carry out their initial training as new recruits. After this time, both will carry out further training in France and become fully fledged Marines at their passing out ceremony.

Why should you take this course?If you want to gain a level 3 qualification in science in combination with other subjects then this may be the course for you. If you prefer continual assessment through assignments to exams then this is a more suitable course than A level science courses. It is also suitable for students that don’t want to specialise in a particular science but want a broad science qualification. The first year units studied can lead to a BTEC Level 3 Certificate in Applied Science. You can then progress onto the second year which will lead to the Subsidiary Diploma. This is equivalent to an A level.

Course contentThe course consists of 6 units of study taken over two years. In the first year all students will study units in fundamentals of science, working in the science industry and scientific practical techniques. In the second year, 3 units will be chosen from a range of specialist units in Biology, Chemistry or Physics. The course covers the Body in Action, Health and Safety, the Athletes Lifestyle, Fitness Testing, Technical and Tactical Skills, Training and Fitness for Sport. In addition, you will study Community Sports Leader Award and have the opportunity to take additional coaching courses. Each unit is related to the sporting interests of the group wherever possible and adapted to be as practical as the course allows.It is advisable to have a strong scientific interest, an interest in a variety of sports and improving personal fitness levels.This is an ideal alternative to AS/A2 Physical Education if you are not keen on examinations or do not have two sports to offer at a high level.

Each unit has outcomes you must cover in order to pass. Grading is done on a Pass, Merit and Distinction basis. Assessment will come in many different forms: presentations, essay writing, research projects, coaching ability, major tournament running and poster campaigns. Each assignment is marked by your tutor and the grade verified internally by a second tutor.There are no examinations.

Why should you take this course?This course is ideal for students who prefer coursework to exams, who enjoy independent research and are interested in working in one of the most exciting and expanding industries in the world.

Course contentThis 18 unit vocational course will help you to understand the travel and tourism industry in the UK and overseas and to develop skills and knowledge needed to work in travel and tourism or progress to higher education. You will study four core units and fourteen specialist units spread over the two years. Core units include Customer Service and the UK as a Destination. Specialist units include Retail Travel, Passenger Transport and Visitor Attractions.

How will I be assessed?Each unit will be assessed by your tutors as you go along. The sum of your coursework marks will determine your final grade, which will be a Pass, Merit or Distinction, and is equivalent to three A Levels.

Are there any special expenses?You will need to take part in trips and visits as part of the course.

What could I do next?This qualification prepares you for a range of careers in the UK or overseas travel and tourism industries, with employers such as Travel Agencies, Visitor Attractions, Tour Operators or Tourist Information Centres. It also allows for progression onto higher education courses such as degree courses in International Travel Management, Events Management or Tourism and Leisure Studies. As a possible extra qualification you will be able to gain a Level 2 Award for Resort Representatives.

This year’s Fashion Show, in conjunction with Bexhill Fairtrade has proved to be the best yet with over 150 people enjoying the event. This year’s participating Bexhill College students, who study a range of different courses from Textiles to Art, showed off their original and creative designs alongside ‘recycled’ designs by ex-College student, Zahra Rose, and of course fashions by Fairtrade retailers/designers such as Nomads, Gossypium, People Tree, Bibico, Assisi and LovethatStuff. The latter were modelled by students from St Richard’s Catholic College, Bexhill High and Pestalozzi Village. Bexhill Mayor, Councillor Stuart Wood, was guest of honour at this year’s fashion show and he praised the joint collaboration between the Bexhill Fairtrade Town Committee and Bexhill College, calling it “one of Bexhill’s most successful ventures” and hoped it would continue for many years.

I first came across Dubai Fashion Week when my sister and I were looking for tickets for London Fashion Week. Later, we spotted a ‘new generation’ section for ‘emerging talent’. I dismissed the idea, but after a few weeks consideration I applied for it. Little did I know that months later I would be selected to be one of four designers out of a pool of around two hundred and fifty designers who had applied from around the world. I later discovered that Dubai Fashion Week was unable to cover any of my costs and I would need financial back up. The realisation that my dream was going to remain a dream really got me down. However, very generously, my Principal from Bexhill College, Karen Hucker, agreed that the College would make a contribution toward my trip. Once in Dubai the adventure really started. I was only allowed a set amount of garments, but I still made my mark at the show and soon after, I was told that interviewers wanted to speak to me. I got down to business and did around nine interviews. Since Dubai Fashion Week, I have received three job offers, design collaboration offers, model requests and even an amazing offer to take part in India’s Fashion and Culture week .
