Between Us ... Forty-seven of us recently returned from a wonderful
pilgrimage to Israel. Despite the rain and snow and hail and fog we had a marvelous journey. While the journey lasted for ten days it felt as if it was all one sweeping moment in time. We walked through Jewish history taking giant steps. At one moment we were facing the bedrock of King Solomon's Temple built nearly 3,000 years ago. Suddenly we were standing on the site of a second century synagogue in the Upper Galilee. A moment later we were transported to a crusader fortress in Acco and then again directed to Israel's Independence Hall. It all went so quickly but so powerfully. Just ask any of those who participated.
While in Jerusalem I had the chance to sit and meet with the travel company that will be working with us for our Temple's 2008 Solidarity Pilgrimage to Israel. That's what we're calling it-a solidarity pilgrimage. Why? Because we will be joining in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Jewish State as they conclude Israel's 60th anniversary. At a time when anti-Semitism is on the rise all over the world and when Israel is being unfairly criticized, it is so very important for us to send a strong message of support and solidarity. That's what we' ll do.
And it's a pilgrimage because I believe that Jews don't go on tours to Israel. They go to be one with the land of our people, the history of our people, and to share with our people who have come from all comers of the world.
Every month now the list of those planning on being with us is growing. If you haven't put your name on the list please do so now. I have no doubt that this will be a wonderful journey for everyone who participates. And I do hope that the entire congregation will be with us. After all, what greater statement of solidarity can we make to honor the Jewish People's greatest modem miracle - the rebirth and renewal of the Jewish Commonwealth - the place and nation and people we so proudly call Israel!
Oh, a very dear friend and colleague of mine called me when he heard about our pilgrimage. "Bennett, You really going to do this?" he asked. When I told him yes and why, he said, "We're going to do it, too!" So, maybe Anshe Emeth, you and I will start a trend for 2008; Congregational solidarity pilgrimages from America to Israel. What a statement that will be. Come join us. I look forward to being in Jerusalem with all of you!
Tango Shabbat An exciting opportwUty! We just received word that Cantors Diego Rubinsztein and Alejandra Levi will be in the United States visiting congregations. Today, the Argentinian liturgy is finding its way into synagogues; it represents a new and exciting approach to Jewish music and Jewish prayer. Come join us on Friday, February 16 and experience Shabbat worship with this new and vibrant sound.
Israel - Study & Travel As we prepare for our Temple Trip in 2008 to celebrate Israel's 60th anniversary, j oin us in study ofIsrael's history, geography, culture and politics. We will be visiting from October 20 to November 8, 2008. It is important for us all to know about the many facets ofIsrael.
Join us Monday evenings at 7:30 for our WmterlSpring Kollel taught by ~biMiller, Rabbi Fellman and Rabbi Kogan.

Some Great Tu B'sehvat ideas:
Host a Tu B'shevat Seder. It is fun and easy. You will only need a quick run to the grocery store to get the necessary items.
For information on JNF or to plant trees in Israel, visit JNF.org.
A great way t6 mark Tu B'shevat is to visit the New Jersey Agricultural Museum, located on the Cook College Campus of Rutgers University.
Plant seeds in a pot indoors and allow them to grow indoors until the weather allows you to replant the seedling in the ground. Another great way to plant a seed indoors is to take the pit of an avocado and place it partially submerged in a cup of water. (Using toothpics to hold the avocado above a full glass of water is a great way to do this!)

THE ANSHE EMETH GUIDE TO TU 8'SHEVAT
t):1~:1 y't) Written and prepared by Rabbi Daniel Fellman
Tu B'shevat celebrates the natural world. A holiday for the trees, the name 'Tu B'shevat" refers to the Hebrew date of this holiday-the 15th day of the Hebrew month of Shevat. This holiday receives no mention in the Bible, and first appears in the Talmud in a discussion about New Years celebrations. The Talmud records the existence of four new years celebrations: Rosh Hashanah, the new year for years which we still mark; the first day of Elul, a new year celebration for animals; the first ofNisan, a new year for kings and festivals ; and the 15th of Shevat, Tu B'shevat, the new year for trees. (Talmud Rosh Hashanah 14a)
As a holiday for trees and a celebration of the natural world, Tu B'shevat enjoys a close connection with the land of Israel. While Tu B'shevat usually arrives in the dead of winter for us in America, in Israel, this is a prime planting season. Celebrations of Tu B'shevat regularly include the planting of trees throughout Israel, a mitzvah we can join by buying trees through JNF.
Tu B'shevat seders are another great celebration of the holiday. In these seders, like Passover seders, we drink four cups of wine and read from a Haggadah. But instead of telling the story of our journey from slavery to freedom as we do on Passover, we instead learn about the plants and fruits of the land of Israel.
