BETWEEN BREATHS

FEBRUARY 25 TO MARCH 7, 2020

One of the most exciting theatre companies in the country has to be Artistic Fraud from Newfoundland. They have visited us here at the Grand in the past seasons, bringing their acclaimed productions of The Colony Of Unrequited Dreams and Oil And Water to our Spriet Stage. This new production, Between Breaths, is the first time we have presented one of their productions on the McManus Stage. It’s an intimate experience of yet another treasure of a play from these fine people.

Between Breaths is based on the life of Dr. Jon Lien who pioneered tech-niques for rescuing whales trapped in fishing nets. That hardly sounds

like an easy story to tell on a stage, now does it? What could prove to be a daunting and impossible story to tell becomes a work of theatrical poetry in the hands of these gifted artists. You’ll see the whales, feel the ocean, and experience time travel—all within the confines of our intimate McManus Stage.

Telling the story backwards in time and using the ensemble to envelop the story with live music, Artistic Fraud returns to haunt us in yet another inspiring tale. How lucky are we?

Hi, I’m Eileen Furtney, Audience Development Assistant at the Grand Theatre. I was born in Stratford, Ontario, and now live in London, Ontario. Some of my ancestors came to Canada from Trinidad & Tobago in the 1970s, and settled in Guelph on the traditional lands of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation. As I reflect on my family’s history in this country, I also recognize and acknowledge the historic relationship of Indigenous peoples to this land.

We would like to welcome you to the Grand Theatre, where we operate on the traditional lands of the Attawandaron (also known as Neutral) people and territories associated with various treaties of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee, and Lunaapewak. The Attawandaron peoples once settled this region alongside the Algonquin and Haudenosaunee peoples, and used this land as their traditional beaver hunting grounds.

In London, our treaties include the 1796 London Township Treaty and the 1822 Longwoods Treaty. The London Township Treaty was a regional treaty signed by diplomats representing all parties living on the land that today we know as southwestern Ontario. The Longwoods Treaty was signed by representatives of the Crown and the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation and covers approximately 580,000 acres in area.

Locally, there are three First Nations communities. They are the Chippewas of the Thames First Nation, the Oneida Nation of the Thames, and the Munsee Delaware Nation. We would also like to recognize the growing Indigenous urban population, comprised of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people.

We value the significant historical and contemporary contributions of local and regional First Nations, and all of the Original Peoples of Turtle Island (also known as North America), and acknowledge the traditional lands upon which we operate, as well as all the sacred waterways.

ARTISTIC FRAUD OF NEWFOUNDLAND

ABOUT THE COMPANYArtistic Fraud of Newfoundland was formed in St. John’s in 1995. Over the past twenty-five years the company has come to be hailed as one of English Canada’s most daring and innovative theatre companies. The works of Artistic Fraud and its creators, director Jillian Keiley and Robert Chafe, have played across the country to high acclaim and have garnered Jill the 2004 Siminovitch Prize for directing and Robert the 2010 Governor General’s Literary Award for Drama. Since their inception, the company has been devel-oping a unique brand of choral stage work, the goal of which is deeply rooted in the theatrical possibilities of ensemble performance. With often minimal setting, props and technical elements, the ensemble chorus is given full reign and responsibility for all visual and aural elements. Though carefully plotted and meticulously assembled, the goal of the work is the effortlessly organic; a performer driven stage where spectacle meets story.

DEDICATION Artistic Fraud would like to dedicate this run of Between Breaths to our drama-turge Iris Turcott.

Together, with Sarah Garton Stanley, Iris provided the clarity and backbone to our most celebrated work, including Afterimage and Oil and Water. She was a true hero of the Canadian theatre, always behind the scenes and rarely getting any of the credit. We counted ourselves lucky to have had her tireless passion and wisdom on our team. Iris passed away in September 2016. Between Breaths was to be the last play she helped us create.

PLAYWRIGHT’S NOTES

I was recently asked what was different and challenging about writing this play. For sure I’ve written about real people in the past and the research process has taken me into people’s homes all across the province and beyond. I’ve sat and recorded people talking about loved ones, telling intimate stories about real lives that have come and gone, and I’ve been gobsmacked by the generosity and trust. The big difference with Between Breaths was the timing. I approached the Lien family with the idea of writing this play back in 2012, a mere two years after Jon’s passing. Despite their still fresh grief, Judy, Elling and their family opened their doors and their hearts to me, as did Jon’s colleagues and friends. They all did so with the firm intent that Jon’s great legacy continue to be celebrated. Beyond all else, I hope this play serves that purpose.

The Playwright acknowledges the assistance of the 2015 Banff Playwrights Lab—a part-nership between the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity and the Canada Council for the Arts.

Between Breaths was developed with assis-tance from ArtsnL and St. John’s City Arts Jury. My thanks to all those who lent their time and their stories to Between Breaths: Judy Lien, Elling Lien, OJ Lien, Wayne Ledwell, Wayne Barney, Peter Hennebury, Bill Montevechhi, Holly Hogan, and Danielle Devereaux.

JON LIENHe was known by many as “the whale man”—Jon Lien earned that name through years of tireless work in marine conservation, becoming a world leader in his field. Born in South Dakota in 1939, Lien developed a love and empathy towards animals early in his life: at just four years old, he bottle-fed an injured squirrel and released it back into the wild once it had recovered. It was later in life, while studying clinical psychology at Washington State University, that Lien realized that animal behaviour was his true area of interest. In 1968, Lien accepted a position at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland—it took only one trip to the island for Lien and his wife, Judy, to fall in love with their future home.

The late 1970s saw a problem develop in the waters of Newfoundland and Labrador: while searching for food, humpback whales were becoming tangled in fishing gear from local fishers. In 1978, one of those fishers called Lien about the problem, and when Lien arrived, he was able to release the trapped whale. Thus began a life’s work: Lien became the go-to whale rescuer. Trapped whales were a problem for both parties: prior to Lien’s work, the whales would often die as a result of their entrapment; in addition, the fisher’s equipment and nets were often badly damaged by the struggling whale. In response to this growing problem, Lien secured a small government grant which allowed him to found the Whale Research Group, and the Entrapment Assistance Program, which offered assistance to fishers and entrapped whales. At its height, the program handled 150 entrapped humpbacks

each year, and rescued 11 different species of whales and dolphins from the nets. Not only would Lien safely release the trapped animal—he’d also help the fishers mend their nets and equipment afterwards.

Lien’s work was ground-breaking: he was one of the first in his field to view whale conser-vation from an ecosystem approach, consid-ering the interconnectedness of all animal life in the area, and how different species and environments affected one another. He invented an alarm system to warn whales away from boats—the “Lien pinger”—and pioneered techniques for releasing whales from nets that are now used around the world. He was internationally renowned in the field of environmental conservation, contributing to numerous commissions on whaling, and working with Canadian parks organizations to ensure the protection of marine life.

In his later life, Lien’s focus necessarily shifted to his own health: in the early 2000s, Lien was in a truck accident, and over the course of the next ten years, his health—par-ticularly his mobility and his mental health—suffered, until his passing in 2010. Lien is remembered for his remarkable legacy: his career led to the rescue of more than 500 marine animals, and contributed substan-tially to the advancement of education in marine conservation.
