Betsy’s Battle Flag
2007ummerS
From dusk tilldawn the livelong nightShe kept the tallow dips alight,
And fast her nimble fingers flewTo sew the stars upon the blue. With weary eyes and aching headShe stitched the stripes of white and red,And when the day came up the stairComplete across a carven chair
Hung Betsy’s battle flag.
Like shadows in the evening gray The Continentals filed away,With broken boots and ragged coats,But hoarse defiance in their throats; They bore the marks of want and cold,And some were lame and some were old,And some with wounds untended bled,But floating bravely overhead
Was Betsy’s battle flag.
When fell the battle’s leaden rainThe soldier hushed his moans of painAnd raised his dying head to seeKing George’s troopers turn and flee.Their charging column reeled and broke,And vanished in the rolling smoke,Before the glory of the stars,The snowy stripes, and scarlet bars
Of Betsy’s battle flag.
...still her deathless banner flies,And keeps the color of the skies.A nation thrills, a nation bleeds,A nation follows where it leads,...

Dear WSA:How nice to find your letter, the certificate of mem-
bership recognition, dinner invitation, and check, in mymail recently. I can hardly believe that it has been 50years since my mother enrolled me as a member.
I am a second generation member of WSA and havenumerous memories of tagging along to dances inGlobeville with my mother, Helen Hafner, my UncleFrank and Aunt Martha Hafner, and cousins. My mostvivid memory is of a picnic in the mountains west ofDenver. A lamb was prepared for roasting on a spit formeat for the picnic. My cousin Steve and I begged to beallowed to turn the spit. We had great fun doing thisand turned the lamb faster and faster until the lamb felloff the spit. We were severely punished and never giventhat chance again.
I wish that I could have been an active lodge mem-ber, but long work hours prohibited that. I just retiredMarch 30, 2007 after 45 years in the asphalt business. Iworked from sun up until after the sun went down aminimum of 6 days a week, 7 days a week during thesummer months. I am very happy to be retired and havetime to spend with my wife, take a real summer vaca-tion for the first time after 34 years of marriage, andcomplete a long list of tasks that need attention in thehouse, yard and garden.
I am proud to be a 50 year member of such a fineorganization. I also appreciate the years of supportWSA has given my wife in behalf of the Senior HubMeals on Wheels Program, which she administers. Mywife and I look forward to attending the dinner in July.Thank you very much.
Sincerely,Larry Hafner
Dear WSA:I was enrolled in
WSA by my parents, Mr.& Mrs. Samuel Kubek, along with my two sis-ters and brother. My par-ents also enrolled mychildren and their greatgrandchildren until theirdemise. After Daddydied in Oct. 1993 Momcontinued the tradition.Six were enrolled and one was born after her death inSeptember of 2001. Therefore we have a great numberof members from our family.
After I graduated high school I went to Washington,D.C. and worked for the Department of Agriculture.
After six years I returned home, married and hadtwo sons, Andrew and Steven. When they beganschool I returned to the government to work. I workedfor several agencies and retired after 30 years of serv-ice. My last job was that of a Claims Examiner for theDepartment of Labor where I adjudicated Black Lungclaims for Coal Miners, their widows, etc.
I now am mostly a housewife. I do volunteer at thechurch and work two hours on Thursday at my son’sdental office.
At church I belong to the Altar Society, PastoralCommittee and home directed our Orthodox GreekCatholic acappela chair for almost 35 years.
My husband is a retired school teacher and is quiteinvolved with many organizations such as Lions,Troneleis Protective Association and serves on theAmerican Legion team. They do many things for ourcommunity, but mostly attend military funerals. (I helphim with all of these organizations and we lead a verybusy life.) Presently I am First V.P. of the T.P.A. organ-ization and this deals mostly with the safety of chil-dren.
I am a grandmother of three. They are ages 13, 10and 2. I attend many activities of the two older onesand have much fun.
I am a breast cancer survivor for 5 years and myhusband also is a cancer survivor.
I love good music and am an avid sports fan, espe-cially the Steelers and Pitt Panthers.
Sincerely,Mary Ann Muha

Dear WSA:I would like to thank you very
much for recognizing my 50years with the WSA and also forthe check. It was quite a pleasantsurprise.
My father’s name wasLeopold Korsick and he wasborn in Denver, Colorado, in theGlobeville area. My father’smother and father were a part ofthe Western Slavonic Associationfrom its start in this area. I can remember as a child the funwe had going to picnics and dances through the Lodge. Mymother’s name was Mary Francis and she was born inAmherst, Ohio. Her mother and father moved to the NorthDenver area with their children when my mother was ayoung girl because her father had asthma.
My parents, Leo and Mary met through a mutual friendand were married at Holy Rosary Church in Globeville. After their marriage they moved to North Denver and weattended St. Catherine of Sienna church. I have a brotherwho is two years older than me. His name is Leo Korsickand he is married to Rachel and they have four children and11 grandchildren. They also live in the Denver area.
I graduated from North High School and started workingin an office after my graduation. I worked in various officesdoing secretarial work and I also attended Barnes BusinessCollege.
I met my husband John Stackhouse and we were marriedat St. Catherine of Sienna Church in 1961. We lived inNorth Denver until 1967 and then moved to our home inLakewood, Colorado. We have lived in our home for 40years and attend St. Bernadette Church. We have two mar-ried children, Michael (daughter-in-law Kelly), and LeAnneMiller (son-in-law Eric). Mike and Kelly live in WarsawMissouri and have two children, Corey and Danielle.LeAnne and Eric live in Littleton and have three childrenErin, Mark and Brien.
John and I are retired and enjoy traveling, volunteering atour church, spending time with our children and grandchil-dren and doing things around the house. We have a veryenjoyable life and enjoy the many friends and family thatare in our lives.
I thank God for a wonderful family that has always stayedclose and for the many gifts God has given us. I am alsovery proud to be associated with WSA these many years.
Sincerely,Marianne Korsick Stackhouse

Dear WSA:Thank you for recognizing my
50 years with WSA, how surprisedI was to receive the check and cer-tificate, where do the years go? Ican remember my father CharlesSotosek taking me to the WSAoffice to fill out my application forthe insurance where Mr. Jersinassisted us. I have lots of fond memories of theSlovenian Gardens, picnics, dances, etc.
I married John Chapla, a Globeville fellow and have3 daughters and 6 beautiful grandchildren, 5 girls and 1boy. In 1991 we moved to Pueblo, Colorado and one ofmy proudest accomplishments is that we, John and I,were able to organize the “Southern Colorado FamilyPolka Club.” I recall as a child my father taking hisaccordion to Pueblo to play for the Slovenians there inthe taverns and clubs, I felt there was a need for a polkaclub. After an interview with us, the Pueblo newspaper“Pueblo Chieftain” wrote an article with a heading “ APueblo Polka Club?” and we were on our way to anorganization where dances are held twice a month. Iwas also able to bring a pre-recorded Polka radio showto town “Polka Time America” and that was lots of fun.We received donations from Pueblo WSA Lodges #3and #16, which was a big help in getting started. Theclub today has grown and still dances twice a month. Iwas glad to see WSA member John Blatnick, CanonCity resident, has participated in the dances.
I know you are all wonder-ing why I have a picture ofmyself and two others, mycousin Frank Sotosek fromBartlesville, OK and I arewith Tony Sotosek (middle )from Krkso, Slovenia. In 2003we were able to take a trip to
Slovenia, and much to our surprise we had this ButtonBox musician perform for us in Jerusalem, he is TonySotosek; now what a coincidence, that is not a nameyou hear often. My father always said the family camefrom Austria and that they had changed the spellingwhen coming to the U.S.A. Well I don’t think so, wefeel as if Tony is a relative of ours as not only did myfather play accordion, but his father, Frank Sotosek, also played and taught accordion and Tony also has anaccordion school in Slovenia.
Our trip to Slovenia, Croatia and Austria was the bestever, 3 Button Box musicians from the USA andCanada were with us on the bus jamming continually aswas the Slivovitz (Plum Brandy). The European winesand meals were absolutely the best I had ever tasted.
I’m so glad I took the trip as now I know where myfamily comes from and approximately where they lived.
Thank you again for the recognition.
Sincerely,Marlene (Sotosek) Chapla
Dear WSA:My sincere thanks for the generous check, the cer-
tificate and the invitation to the WSA AwardsBanquet.
My mother, Mary Grande, was an active memberbefore I was born. Several of the people I hope to seeat the Awards Banquet were, and still are, membersbecause of her.
My sister, Mitzi Stackhouse, was a delegate to theconvention in Chicago at the age of nine. She is
among those in the picture on the cover of the Winter2007 “Voice.”
I still attend the monthly meetings and my 4 chil-dren and 3 grandchildren are all members.
I am proud to be a member of the WSA and I havemany fond memories of the past activities and ofknowing many of the “greats” past and present.
Thank you to all.Sincerely,
Jennie Musk
