    Pastoral Letter

Dearly Brothers and Sisters, Greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It seems we have just had our New years day and al-ready we are now in the third month. Last month we had our WSCS SUNDAY, FRIDAY HALF NIGHT PRAYER AND MISSION WEEKEND. All events through the month went on well with great joy and enthusiasm. WSCS SUNDAY 17th Feb 2019: Both Tamil and English were entirely conducted and led by the women of our Church. It was encouraging to see women of the Church do such a wonderful service with fear and dedication which made me to think of the liberation that the Lord had given to the women of the world. The skits, Dance, special song, praise and worship were well co-ordinated and well performed. The messages rendered by Retd. Rev. Mrs. Shanthi Thilak in the Tamil Service was meaningful and encouraging to the point of women’s role in the world equiv-alent to men, and in the English Service Retd. Missionary Mrs. Selina Mohan-das spoke on the role of women in the ministry and how important their task

is in the Church. The debate which was conducted by Mrs Angelin Isaac and Mr. Isaac on the Topic “Ministry to be shared equally among both men and women of the Church, for/against” was an eye opener to the various truths in the Bible.

FRIDAY HALF NIGHT PRAYER 22nd Feb 2019:

I really appreciate the Prayer co-ordination team to have come up with the idea of having a half night prayer in the Church. The prayer time went on from 9.00 p.m. to 1.00 a.m. The entire four hours was spent in pray-er except for a short 15min exhortation from the word of God. We were about 25 of us praying and the entire time though late at night were awake throughout with only a 15 min break for tea. Everybody who came for prayer expressed the presence of God in their midst and expressed great joy when they departed from the Church. I should thank Vijay and team for preparing the prayer point sheet which comprised of almost all the needs of the Church and ministry, missionary organizations, state of Karnataka, nation India, world and a special time for special request of members of the Church.

MISSION SATURDAY AND SUNDAY 23rd & 24th of Feb 2019:

The missions dept. headed by Dr. Solomon Pushparaj along with Mrs. Selina Mohandas had decided to put the Church to an awareness of the im-portance of reaching our neighbours with the gospel. This was something of a welcome move to me, as my first observation in the Church was its empty chairs. I therefore took it as my joy and task to immediately encourage the team to carry on the task. The resource persons Mrs. & Mr. David Chandran and Mrs. & Mr. Robert Joy were assigned to speak in different area fellow-ships on Saturday and with the consideration of WMC in mind, we had one resource person in Whitefield area. The missionaries, with their wide range of success stories in their neighbourhood ministry, shared Biblical insights as well as personal experiences of how they go about doing neighbourhood ministry and answered many questions that the members had asked. Sunday services both in Tamil and English were teaching sessions of how people ought to do ministry amongst our neighbours. After the service the members were taken through a session of chart presentation of the Nine area minis-tries actively carried on by the members of the Church along with the Mis-sionary organisations like IEM and COME ministries. In the afternoon after lunch the workshop arranged went on well and simultaneously the Hindi area outreach was also met with our resource persons. I greatly appreciate the hard work, planning and zeal that the Church carries on, in reaching the un-reached in our local as well as distant areas. May the Lord anoint all the members to be effective neighbourhood missionaries and help in the growth of the Church.

    BAPTISM CLASSES 24th Feb 2019:

We have started baptism classes and was attended by three candi-dates (more to follow), I request your prayers for the candidates as and how they get ready to become full members of the Church.

While we cross milestones every year with progress and focus let us continue in the study of the word of God, Prayer, fellowship and in constant step with the Holy Spirit. Many a times we begin with a powerful anointing of the Holy Spirit but give way to our carnal nature by the way; but the scripture teaches us to keep in step with the Holy Spirit (Gal 5: 25). The interpretation of this verse is to walk in line with the Holy Spirit.

To accomplish this, we need to be constantly in the control of the Holy Spirit. It could happen that we may give in to our carnal nature to take over our life than be submitted to the leading of the Holy Spirit; this may bring in us failures and fatigue in doing the purpose of God. An irritation creeps into us and makes us go off tangent for we feel that some where some thing is not going the right way. When this kind of feeling sets in, we need to quickly go to the presence of God and get ourselves refreshed in the Holy Spirit, which means we may have to go with a different agenda and at times in absolutely a different direction.

Keeping in step with the Holy Spirit is to fight the carnal battle which keeps frightening us to think of unnecessary worldly challenges as battles which we cannot win. Most of the battles are easily won by the power of the Holy Spirit; all we need to do is to keep listening to the voice that leads us in the righteous direction. There is a spiritual realm we operate on, this is not seen by the carnal world, but this is actually the real director of the universe and nothing happens in this world except by its power and direction. At times you may not agree with me on this but the reality I have seen does not go with only facts and figures and only on rational understanding but by intui-tion, strong feelings, perceptions etc.

Once we are in step with the Holy Spirit, we will know how to walk by the leading of Him who is able to do such great things with ordinary people like us; to be people who can change the world upside down. May the good Lord Bless you through this month as we enter into the Lenten season to be renewed and transformed to be a Church vibrant and glowing for the Lord.

    God Bless you all

    Rev. Immanuel J Manasseh

    TESTIMONY - Mrs Priyanka Singh

Every single testimony is unique and gives us a bit more insight into how God works in our lives, in this day and age. Whatever we go through whether its joyful or painful, it is allowed into our lives by a God who loves us beyond measure. This story is about a remarkable miracle which hap-pened in my father’s life a few months ago.

As in the case of all retired seniors, my parents too, drawn to the powerful lure of grandchildren, plan frequent visits to meet them. Before one such travel to Chennai, my dad faced issues in his eyes and vision and so was recommended for cataract operation by the ophthalmologist. A couple of blood tests were taken and a date for the surgery was decided.

My dad reached Chennai the very next day and was startled to hear from the doctor that the results were disturbing and a recheck of the same had to be done at the earliest. We all were worried and anxious when we came to know that the test specified was for HIV. The blood sample was giv-en in a laboratory nearby and we grew more anxious as the results were not provided at the dates and time they had mentioned. Tired of waiting, I per-sonally called the lab technician to enquire and after repeated requests from myside, he said that the HIV results were positive. He further advised me to wait for a couple of days to confirm this with other subsequent tests.

I was shattered to hear these words; I conveyed the same to my brother and parents in Chennai. We were devastated. As we faced this loom-ing darkness, building up before us we were shattered into a thousand little pieces with our uncertainties. We had so many questions as to how come this had come on us. Not only were we devastated but was also helpless in what was happening to us. It was as if we faced death itself.

Hearing this, my husband rushed from office immediately. what was remaining was only hope and prayer. We held hands, cried and prayed and poured out our hearts to the Lord. We were not in a position to share this to anyone but rather prayed ceaselessly. Our prayers were simple, honest and specific and we voiced our complete dependence on HIM

Our hearts sank as we realized that we had to prepare ourselves for another journey which seemed like stepping into a dark tunnel with no end. My parents along with my brother travelled back to Trichy to consult our family doctor who is a Pathologist and owns a reputed Laboratory in Trichy. It was painful to see our dear father, who has always had a close walk with the Lord remained calm and speechless. My mother’s faith and words of hope kept us going. The word of God became so alive to us during those times

  • Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 11

The next day both my parents gave their blood samples for a precise and higher sensitive HIV test as advised by the doctor. The results which came in the evening showed, it was HIV Negative and was 100% accurate. (Later the further awaited results from the Chennai laboratory also turned out to be negative). We had no words except to praise and shout thanks to our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ.

When I rethink of this incident, it seems l I was like one of those tra-peze artists in a circus who leaps out of the platform and flies in the air with no support, when at the next moment the catcher arrives at the perfect tim-ing and snatches the flyer out of the air and takes him home. Like the flyer I am indeed very grateful for the outstretched arms which are always ready to hold me whenever I fall. Psalm 46:1 God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble., holds true in our lives. I want to encourage all who read this to never lose hope, even you think there is none. Don’t ever give up but place all your hope in Christ who is surely a very present help in our trou-bles.

The Discipline of Prayer - continued D.C. Franklin and Noel Thomas Important characteristics of Prayer 4. Prayer is fight against evil We're in a battle in this world. We may not see it, we might forget it's there but….If you're a believer who is living as salt and light in a dark world, you won't go for long without encountering spiritual warfare - obstacles and attacks satan will hurl your direction. The enemy would love to bring discour-agement and through doubt, fear and stress – defeat. Don’t let him win. God reminds us in His word to stay aware of Satan’s schemes, to live alert in this world, and to stay close to Him. Trust and depend on God and not in your own self/strength. "Not by might nor by power, but by My Spirit,' says the Lord of hosts." Zech. 4:6 Prayer is vital in this battle.

In Ephesians 6: 11-17 Paul instructs believers…. “Put on the full armor of God, so that you can take your stand against the devil’s schemes. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms. Therefore put on the full armor of God, so that when the day of evil comes, you may be able to stand your ground, and after you have done everything, to stand. Stand firm then, with the belt of truth buckled around your waist, with the breastplate of righteousness in place, and with your feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace. In addition to all this, take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God”. The Greek word for struggle literally means “wrestling” or even “fighting.” We wrestle against dark and evil supernatural powers that seek to hinder our prayers and the advance of God’s Kingdom. We tend to see our struggle as against flesh and blood, which is other people. But God’s Word tells us here that our enemy is not other people, but these evil unseen forces. And with the same battle cry, in the next verse (verses 18), Paul calls us to be alert in prayer: “And pray in the Spirit on all occasions with all kinds of pray-ers and requests. With this in mind, be alert and always keep on praying for all the Lord’s people”.

  • Bethel Methodist Church, Bangalore 13

James 4: 7 tells us “Resist the devil, and he will flee from you”. 1 Peter 5:8 tells us “Be alert and of sober mind. Your enemy the devil prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour. Resist him, stand-ing firm in the faith,……”. Certainly, one important way to fight and resist the devil is through prayer. We are to take the sword of the Spirit, the Word of God, to fight against the enemy’s lies. He equips us with strength, wisdom, and discernment through the Holy Spirit in the spiritual warfare. He invites us to spend time in His Pres-ence, through prayer and worship, pressing in to know Him more. As we grow to know God’s Truth and what is real, we also know more what is false, and we are stronger to stand against it in the powerful name of Jesus. Praying using the Word of God is a powerful weapon against the forces of evil. An excellent example we have in scripture for Spiritual Warfare in Prayer - Daniel 10:1-21, where the message to Daniel obstructed for 21 days by the evil forces and Michael the Archangel had to come for help (verse 13). In conclusion, it is imperative that the prayer life of a Christian is an im-portant and powerful weapon to fight against the attacks from the evil of demonic forces and also from the stealthy attack from within - our own fallen nature. To be continued

Pray for a state in India: Jammu & Kashmir The Jammu and Kashmir state, an integral part of India, has endured tragic suffering and strife, dating back centuries, most particularly since the partition of India in 1947 when Pakistan and India contested the possession of Kashmir. Broken down further, the Kashmir Valley region has a 97% Muslim majority, the Jammu region has a 66% Hindu majority and in Ladakh region, 46% are Buddhist. The troubles take many forms: a) Tensions between countries, at times, have come to a head in outright conflict. Kashmir is a thorn in the side of relations between India and Pakistan. Pakistan has gone to war (directly or by proxy) over this divided state four times. The competing claims seem at an impasse. But issues of Kashmir’s long-term governance, its degree of autonomy and its very identity must be resolved for lasting peace to take hold. Pray for calm heads and for the will to work out a peaceful solution by all parties. b) Islamic militancy grew out of the call to “liberate” Kashmir from Indian rule (and create a Muslim state or join Pakistan). Their war against the state to achieve this end not only cost over 40,000 lives, but it also displaced over 800,000 people, crip-pled the region’s economy and drove a wedge between the two nations. Pray that those who use terror and violence would subside and that wisdom and justice would prevail. II. Pray for BMC • Priyanka nagar Tamil AF & its members: Families of Inbaraj, Karunamurthy,
