February 2008 Shevat - Adar I 5768
Social Hall Rededication
In memory of Carol O. Bernstein Saturday, February 9th - 9:45 a.m.
Special Shabbat services and kiddush will be held February 9th in honor of the rededication of the so-cial hall to The Carol O. Bernstein Social Hall. At the Board of Directors meeting held on December 16, 2007, a motion was passed to rename the social hall to The Carol O. Bernstein Social Hall in con-sideration of a charitable gift made by Isadore S. Bernstein in memory of his loving wife, Carol, in the amount of One Hundred Thousand Dollars ($100,000.00). As most of our members know, Carol Bernstein was a pillar of our congregation and community. The synagogue was ex-tremely important to her and she dedicated over 40 years of service to it including serving two terms as the first female president. She also was a past recipient of the Magen David award, the synagogue’s highest honor. The Bernstein family is thrilled and honored that their beloved wife and mother will be remembered in such a special way. We hope that you can attend this special Shabbat service.

From the Rabbi’s Study….
Shalom Haverim!
A recent New York Times article asked the question: “Which of the following people would you say is the most admirable: Mother Theresa, Bill Gates or Norman Borlaug?” Most of us, of course, would point to mother Theresa, the saintly missionary who dedicated her life to the sickly poor in India. Interestingly, however, Gates (a target of ire for many) has dedicating his wealth to eradicating malaria, and Norman Borlaug (who?) is the father of the “Green Revolu-tion,” has used agricultural science to reduce world hunger, and has been credited with saving a
billion lives, more than anyone else in history! There is a verse in the torah which says Hatzne’a lehet im ha’elohim—walk humbly with God. Judaism teaches us to lead lives of mitzvot, without advertising it. Humility, rather than bragging, is a way to imitate God, who rarely shows off. Has-sidic legend speaks of 36 hidden zaddikim—righteous people who lived unnoticed, but healed worlds with their every ac-tion. Humility can also be reflected, symbolically, in the way we dress. Tradition teaches us to wear clothing that is modest, allowing us to shine through as people rather than looking flashy, sexy, or showy. Although the Talmud’s definition of modest dress may reflect the norms of a more traditional society (i.e. hemline below the knee, and women covering their hair and not singing), the idea of modesty both in clothing and in action is still applicable in our own day. May we all live lives of humble service of the divine, and heal worlds with our every deed and word. B’vracha, Rabbi David Siff

MEMBERSHIP SPOTLIGHT “Why I Joined Beth Shalom and Why I like Beth Shalom”
Daniel and Eveda Matzner
My wife and I both grew up in a Conservative Synagogue. In fact, we met at U.S.Y. Camp Ramah when we were teenagers. The conservative service is what we are the most comfortable with. It embodies the values and beliefs that we feel the most congruent with. So joining Beth Shalom was a very natural choice for us. There are several reasons why we like Beth Shalom. Probably the first reason is that the synagogue and its members make us feel welcome. It feels very inviting and we know we can always find “Yiddishkite”. It honestly provides a sense of community for us. The second reason is that the synagogue is convenient. We purposely looked for a home that would be close to the shul. We live 5 minutes away from Beth Shalom. The third reason we like Beth Shalom Synagogue is because this congregation seems to be egalitarian and evolving. We feel that we have an opportunity to help shape the future of this congregation. Dr. Daniel Matzner is a local Chiropractor and owns “Matzner Family Chiropractic” on Forest Drive. He and his wife,
Eveda and their 4 year old daughter have been in Columbia over 2 years and have quickly became a vital part of our
Jewish Community. Dr. Dan is very active at the JCC conducting classes on Health and Exercise. He is a new member of
the Beth Shalom Board. He and his wife are expecting a new addition to the family this month.
Over the next year, members of Beth Shalom Synagogue will be introduced. They will be commenting on “Why they
joined Beth Shalom” and “What they like about Beth Shalom Synagogue.” This is part of our 2008 Membership Drive.
We hope you enjoy meeting some of your fellow congregants!

active member of the community relations council. But most importantly, Carol was a wonderful wife and mother, a doting grandmother, a devoted sister, and a dedicated community leader. She was avail-able to everyone, but we all thought she was our “special friend.” She had the ability to make you think that your issue, your concern, or your thoughts were critically important and when speak-ing with her, you had her undivided attention. She never dwelled on her misfortunes, the tragic death of a son, Samuel, or her own chronic illness, but rather she was forever present for everyone else. When I sat shiva for my father in 2000 and then for my mother in 2001, Carol would come to the syna-gogue to ensure that I had a minyan. She insisted that I call her if I needed her presence for the min-yan, and she offered to stop by from her own hospi-tal visits to help me have the minyan to say Kad-dish. That is what I remember of Carol Bernstein. She was unselfish, she was a giver. She was a won-derful woman, with lots of life in her, but was taken in death too soon. She was a true role model and had a great love and passion for the synagogue. Carol left us with her legacy, her children and grandchildren. Beth, (the lawyer twin, not to be confused with Anne the physician twin) has served on the Board of Directors for several years and re-minds me of Carol’s soft and gentle manner. Beth’s daughter Caroline, is named for her grand-mother. Michelle (who looks like Carol), and her beautiful daughters, Rebecca and Danna, as well as Lowell, remain active in our community and Hilary and Anne often come to Columbia to visit with their family and attend services. The family has rallied around their father, Isadore over these past 4 years as he has been dealing with his own health issues. Isadore, in conjunction with the family, de-cided in December 2007, to give a beautiful gift to Beth Shalom. The Bernstein family has donated
$100,000 to the synagogue in memory of the wife and mother they loved, and to the woman we loved, Carol Bernstein. The social hall will be named the Carol O. Bernstein Social Hall and we will celebrate her life and the generosity of the gift at a Shabbat service on Satur-day, February 9, 2008. Sir Winston Churchill, the British Statesman and Prime Minister aptly stated, “We make a living by what we get and we make a life by what we give.” Gift giving is nothing new to Judaism. Tzedakah refers to the religious obligation to perform charity or philanthropic acts which Judaism emphasizes as an important part of living a spiri-tual life. It is our duty to help those less fortunate than us, it is our obligation to care for each other and it is our nature to give “tzedakah”. But we sometimes forget these things, as we get involved in our individual lives, our own “tsurras” and our personal needs. However, every now and then, someone steps forward and reminds us who we are or more importantly, who we should strive to be. We need to be less self centered and more commu-nity aware, less self absorbed and more concerned with others, and less needy of “stuff” and more giving philan-thropically. The Bernstein’s have not forgotten about the joy of giving and consequently our synagogue will bene-fit from their “tzedakah” and their generosity. This year, the Endowment Foundation will move forward in a cam-paign to ensure the safety and perpetuity of the syna-gogue by campaigning for funds. These funds will be invested, the principal untouched, and the interest used to help offset any possible financial deficits of the operation of the synagogue. We are searching for a new rabbi, we need to continue to educate our children and our adults with our Educational Director, we need to maintain and improve our aging building, and we need to remain op-erational in all aspects of Jewish life. Beth Shalom needs to be present for each of us daily as we move through our life cycles. Only through generous gift giving can this be accomplished. Be a part of the future of Beth Shalom by participating in the present. The Endowment Foundation will be our insurance policy for this.
Thank you Bernstein family for all that you have given
Beth Shalom. We will always remember Carol Bernstein
with great love and fondness.

Yitzhak Buxbaum is one of the most prominent teachers of Jewish spirituality, a master storyteller, and an internationally renowned author of ten books, including The Light and Fire of the Baal Shem Tov, Jewish Tales of Mystic Joy, and Jewish Tales of Holy Women. He teaches in synagogues and Jewish institutions around the U.S. and Canada. Yitzhak is reviving the calling of the maggid (inspirational speaker and storyteller), who traveled from commu-nity to community to awaken Jews to the beauty of their tradition. Yitzhak trains students from around the U.S. in his Jewish Spirit Maggid Training. In his programs, he creates the exciting and enlivening at-mosphere of a special event, in which everyone is involved. Judaism is communicated in a way to reach the committed as well as the curious, those who are near, along with those who are now far -- but just need someone to offer them a welcome at the door. Carole Forman is a sensational acting-style story-teller who has given spiritual pleasure to people of all ages around the country. Formerly, a professional actress (on Broadway once) she has smicha (ordination) as a Baal Misaper Ruchani– a master spiritual storyteller. She is the founder of TenuYah! and leads creative movement workshops for Jewish and general spiritual groups.

On January 22, we celebrated the New Year of the Trees, “Tu B’shvat”, the 15th of the month of Shevat. As partners with God in Creation, we see ourselves responsible for keeping nature and our environment safe and protected. The Midrash in Kohelet Rabbah teaches: "When God created the first man He took him and showed him all the trees of the Garden of Eden and said to him, 'See my works, how beautiful and praiseworthy they are. And everything that I cre-
ated, I created it for you. Be careful not to spoil or destroy my world--for if you do, there will be nobody after you to re-
pair it”.”
At Beth Shalom Religious School, we studied and discussed how the environment is seen in the Torah, Mishnah and Talmud and modern commentaries from our Rabbis. We looked into ways we can perform acts of caring for the environ-ment, here, in Israel, and worldwide. Last month the Beth Shalom Centennial book was delivered to the congregation. Our founding members planted the seeds of a beautiful garden, of vivid learning and Torah study in Jewish Numerology, Gemmatria, the numbers 5827 have a special meaning – the number 5 is the letter Hei, which is one of the names for G-d. The numbers 8+2= 10, two yud’s G-d’s name again. The number 7 represents Shabbat, the day that G-d rested. We know that God is everywhere, but in this case, I think the location of Beth Shalom Synagogue is truly blessed. It seems that the location of the Beth Shalom building was not a coincidence. This is God’s garden, and we are the garden keepers.

RAMBLINGS AND RUMINATIONS ON JEWISH EDUCATON AND JEWISH LIFE
Rabbi Dr. Leon H. Spotts, Beth Shalom Resident Scholar MARVELS AND MYSTERIES OF THE HEBREW CALENDAR
The vagaries of the Hebrew calen-dar are often baffling, in particular the seemingly inexplicable varia-tions in the annual dating of the Jewish holidays relative to the secular, or Gregorian calendar. The 5768 (2007-2008) Holiday cycle features several striking ex-amples of this phenomenon.
A close examination of the Hebrew calendar for 5768 reveals that it consists of 13 months rather than the usual 12, making 5768 a Hebrew “leap-year”. There are actu-ally seven such leap-years in each 19 year grand calen-darial cycle, as posited by Hillel II. According to this scheme, an extra month is added in the 3rd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 14th, 17th, and 19th years of every 19-year grand cycle. In these seven leap years, there are two months of Adar – Adar 1 and Adar 2 – which come between Shevat (the month we are in now) and Nissan (the month we cele-brate Pesach. In non-leap-years, only one month of Adar occurs between the months of Shevat and Nissan. In these regular years the Holiday of Purim is celebrated on the 14th day of Adar. But in a leap year, Purim is moved forward and observed on the 14th of Adar 2. This ex-plains why in this leap-year of 5768, Purim and the sub-sequent Jewish Holidays, including Pesach, occur so late in this year’s secular calendar. Of course, we have not yet explained why we need these seven leap in each 19-year grand cycle. A full answer to that question will require a separate article which I hope to write within the next few months. In the meantime, anyone who knows, or can research, the correct answer is invited to contact me to discuss your findings and ob-servations.
Based on our collective experience, most of us expect Chanukah to fall fairly close to Christmas. But for the 5768 Holiday year we celebrated Chanukah at the very beginning of December, fully three weeks before the De-cember 25 holiday. By contrast, both Purim and Pesach come late this Holi-day year. Purim is Friday, March 21, 2008, while Pesach begins on Sunday, April 20, 2008. In most years we would have expected these two Holidays to have oc-curred about two weeks earlier on the secular calendar. How, then, are we to explain such apparently aberrant deviations in the 5768 Hebrew calendar? Actually, the dating of the various Jewish Holidays for 5768 – as well as for all other Jewish years – follows a precise logical pattern based on an ingenious mathematical master-plan formalized by Hillel II in the 4th Century C.E.

Sisterhood Happenings On Sunday, January 13th, over 35 women gathered to re-energize the Sisterhood of Beth Shalom. It was unanimous to make an effort to maintain an active organization for the women of Beth Shalom. Many comments were made from young and old, new members and longtime members that many of the needs of the synagogue should be fulfilled by the Sisterhood. Therefore, a wave of energy was stirred and before the reorganization meeting was adjourned, many women volunteered to create a new Board of Officers. The Slate of Officers for BSS Sisterhood will be voted on at the next program which will be a brunch for the entire membership of women of Beth Shalom on Sunday, February 17 at 11 a.m. Please mark your calendars and make plans to attend. I look forward to your participation and support to recreate a viable Sisterhood.

Sharing Shabbat at Home Friday, February 8th at 7 p.m.
(following early services at Beth Shalom-beginning at 6:00 p.m.)
Sharing time with family and friends is an integral part of Shabbat. Many people don’t have a lot of family nearby. Others may never have experienced a traditional Shabbat. There are many who have experienced a traditional Shabbat, but have let it slip out of their lives. No matter what you experience is or motivations are, Beth Shalom wants to help bring our community together to share a tra-ditional Shabbat. Once a month we will gather around Columbia. Some of us will open our homes while others will be guests. Do not feel you have to be a host to participate. Many of us have homes more conducive to hosting a number of dinner guests while others of us do not. From month to month we’ll be in different locations so hosts can participate as guests as well. Bring the whole family: Kids, parents and grandparents too! No experience is necessary. As a host, you need to provide a dining room, Shabbat candles, Kiddush Cup(s), wine for Kiddush, dishes and flatware. If your home is kosher, you may prepare a meat or dairy meal. If not, a dairy or fish meal will be fine. Loan of Benschers, if you need them, to provide all the prayers (Hebrew and transliterated) and Zmirot for the evening will be provided by the synagogue.
Cost for all attendees is $10 per person or $25 per family maximum All contributions made will be donated to the Adinah Kitchen Fund at Beth Shalom.

Dear Congregants of Beth Shalom,
I am a student at Beth Shalom Synagogue Religious School
and I am doing a special project for my Bat Mitzvah, col-
lecting items for Pets Incorporated a non-kill animal shel-
ter in West Columbia. They can use dented or open prod-
ucts that cannot be other-wise sold to the public. Why I
am doing this project is because I am learning that we
need to be more like a giraffe and stick our necks out.
We need to be the ones that help the voiceless. Just
think, there are people that communicate their needs, but
animals can’t talk. So I am a voice for the animals and tell-
ing you what they need. I have placed a collection box at
the Religious School entrance to the synagogue. Please
take a moment and drop something in for the animals.
Thank you,
Sincerely, Nadia Vardi

Dear Friends,
I am writing on behalf of a teacher in our Religious School, Leah Radeboldti. Leah is new to our community and teaches our
kindergarten and first grade students, and she is a true gift for our Religious School community.
Leah is in the process of adopting a 20 month old baby girl, Avigayil, from Guatemala who has cortical blindness and CP. The
needs of this child are great and the love and caring she will receive once here will also be great but Avigayil needs our help to
get her to the United States. Leah is seeking donations of air miles from Delta or American Airlines so she can defray some
of the costs of the roundtrip ticket to Guatemala City to pick up Avigayil and bring her home. I offered to ask the generous
Beth Shalom congregation on her behalf for this gift of miles to pick up her new daughter. Once here Avigayil will need a few
other items like a play yard and a high chair if anyone has used ones they no longer need.
From living here the past year and a half, attending the Traditions Dinner, and reading the Centennial History, I realize more
and more how Beth Shalom takes the act of Tzedakah and being a caring Jewish Community to heart. It is because of this I
feel confident asking for help for Leah and her new daughter, Avigayil.
Thank you in advance for helping Leah in any way you are able.
B’vracha, Rebecca Pinsker, Director of Education
