Beth Jacob
July 2012, Tammuz- Av
FROM THE RABBI
! As I start my second year at Beth Jacob Congregation, I would like to thank the entire membership and community for their support. Serving God involves two elements, study and observance. Observances are divided into four categories. Those that are continuous and constant; those that are performed once a day or a fixed number of times per day; those that are periodic; and those that are occasional or circumstantial. ! The details and mechanics of these matters involve the very structure of the world and mankind and all the varying attributes of each, for these observances are given to man so that he can perfect himself and perfect all that he does. ! As we look into the future we should ask our selves, what are we doing for our Jewish community and for our congregation? Please look at our website or call the shul office to see how you can get involved.
! ! Rabbi Nevo Zuckerman
FROM THE PRESIDENT I would like to thank all of the members of Beth Jacob who attended the recent Annual General Meeting. The turn out was excellent. In addition to the recap of the year provided by Rabbi Zuckerman (with colourful balloons), it was an important opportunity to hear from the Chair of the Finance Committee, the Religious Committee, and the Membership Committee. These three areas (membership, finance, and religion) are the pillars of our congregation. We wouldn’t be able to exist without any one of them. It is the ongoing responsibility of each member to work to keep each area strong. I would also like to recognize the outgoing executive members for all of their efforts, and welcome the new members to the 2012-2013 board. It promises to be another busy and exciting year. Under the guidance and leadership of Rabbi Zuckerman, we have made many accomplishments in the past 12 months, and with the ongoing support and contributions of the congregation we will be able to build on this success. Wishing you and your family, a safe and healthy summer, Howard Dolman- President

Beth JacobCommunity
Beth Jacob wishes Eliaho and Sandra Abrahim blessings and
happiness in their new home.
From: Eliaho and Sandra Abrahim,
”After 32 years of living and raising our family in Kitchener- Waterloo, we are moving to Toronto to start a new chapter in our lives. When we immigrated to Canada in 1975 and arrived in Kitchener in 1979, Beth Jacob was the lively community we sought to raise our children among other Jewish families and provide for them an extension of the culture and traditions we left behind. Throughout the years the shul became an extension of our home, a place where we always felt welcome, where our children learned in Hebrew School, attended Shabbat services, celebrated Jewish holidays, honored their bar and bat mitzvahs, enjoyed summer camps, and a place where we were offered scriptural growth and guidance. We have made lifelong friends at Beth Jacob, and we hope to continue this friendship with all of you, just a short drive down highway 401. With our children and their families now residing in different parts of the world, we are proud to have raised them in this small close-knit community.
We thank you for the wonderful memories and for being such a meaningful part of our lives.”
Eliaho and Sandra AbrahimOur new address is:
1131 Steeles Ave. West, apt. 104
Toronto, ON.

From the religious committee The religious committee wishes to encourage more men to chant the Haftarah at Shabbat services. You should consider volunteering to change a Haftarah to recognize a special occasion, to commemorate a Yahrzeit or just because the more you do the easier it becomes.
Beth Jacob has a few highly qualified members who can chant a Haftarah with no, or minimal, preparation. For the rest of us, however, some more time is required to prepare. What many of you might not realize is just how easy it is to learn to chant a Haftarah. If you have a basic ability to sound out the Hebrew letters, you are well on the way! You do not have to have a wonderful voice!
There are many resources available to help you get underway!
Please consider volunteering. If you are interested in volunteering, please advise:

Welcome to New Members
Vladislav and Natalia Frumkin and their son, Maxim (age 12), joined Beth Jacob in June. They moved to Kitchener some years ago from Israel and have attended our barbecues and Purim programs. Vlad is a mechanical engineer, and Natalia is a software developer. We are delighted to have them as new members.
Las Vegas Trip
Trudie and Steven Norris won the second place prize in this year’s Beth Jacob Lottery draw. Below are some photos of their fabulous trip to Las Vegas.
Walk for Israel
It was overcast on the first Sunday in June, but the rain held off during the Walk for Israel, coordinated by Jeff Budd. Over 100 people attended the walk and the barbecue that followed. Before the walk began, the children had their faces painted with Israeli flags and Stars of David.
The Waterloo Regional Police sent two officers in patrol cars to meet with the walkers at Victoria Park. The officers permitted the children to sit in the patrol cars and listen to the sirens. The children enjoyed that immensely.
Everyone enjoyed the popsicles and water at the park before they circled the park and walked back to the shul where we were treated to grilled hot dogs, hamburgers, chips, and apples in the Norris Brown Room.
It was a successful event that raised over $10,000 for the Youth Futures Program, supporting youth-at-risk living in Northern Israel. Community members from all of the Jewish organizations in the city and region were in attendance. Many thanks go to Jeff Budd and his team for organizing a memorable day.
