MINYAN POLICY WHEN THERE IS A SHIVA MINYAN Synagogue policy is that, when there is a shiva minyan at a location five miles or less from the shul, then the minyan will move to that location. No-tices will be posted at the syn-agogue and included in syna-gogue e-mail.

CELEBRATING SIMCHOT It is wonderful that so many congregants are celebrating special family simchot with their synagogue family. If you have a special birthday or anniversary coming up, call the office to schedule sponsoring/ helping to sponsor a kiddush or oneg.

Donations of nonperisha-ble food are always wel-come at the synagogue for area food banks!

CONTACTING RABBI ATKINS Rabbi Atkins’ normal days off are Tuesday and Wednesday, effective July 1. However he is always contactable via his home phone (860-726-9312) or cell phone (860-331-0879). DO NOT BE RETICENT TO CALL HIM AT HOME WHENEVER NECESSARY!! Please let him or the office know of any ill-nesses, hospitalizations, sim-chot or needs. Feel free to also update the office on any infor-mation related to a congregant. We’re not mind readers!

Many thanks to each of you who donated to the Abe Morri-son Shabbat Dinner Fund. We had a lovely evening and I hope everyone who was there en-joyed it as much as my family did. It’s hard to believe 9 years have passed since Abe passed away and the Dinner Fund has allowed us to keep the tradition, and his memory alive. We are truly grateful. The Morrison Family

The next issue of Chai-lites is our mid-summer issue. You should receive it around July 21.

From Rabbi Atkins’ Desk

There’s a long time between writing a column and your reading it. Let me share with you now a Shavuot message, and if you find that it

“speaks to you,” I invite you to attend services and learn some more! Rabbi Lawrence Kushner tells of the time he brought a nursery school class into the synagogue sanctuary for a tour. He showed them the bima, the ner tamid, the cantor's and rabbi's lecterns. Finally, the tiny kids stood before the huge doors of the Holy Ark. "What do you suppose is in there?" he asked them. "Nothing!" one child answered, "It's empty." "A new car!" another shouted. "An old, old Torah!" responded another. "I know! I know" one child insisted, "It's a mirror!" From the mouths of babes….. For each of the kids was right in a way. For Jews distant and disconnected from Judaism, the first child was right: The Ark is empty. Judaism is alien and barren of meaning and substance. For others, Judaism holds only a superficial, aesthetic appeal. It's all Bar Mitzvah parties, bagels and lox on Sunday morning, and what we'll be wearing to Yom Kippur this year. Religion as cultural entertainment -- a warm, ethnic sentimentality without ethical or spiritual demands. For some, Judaism is a tired, old, depleted faith. They hear in it nothing important for a modern mind, and what they do hear is

interpreted as misogynist, racist, or coldly legalistic. But for those who are prepared to look deeply and imaginatively, the Ark contains a mirror, reflecting the truth about ourselves, our values, our accomplishments and our limitations. The Kotzker Rebbe taught that the uniqueness of Hasidism was this: All Jews are taught, "You should not lie." Hasidim teach: "You should not lie to yourself." It is this reflexive turn, the looking inward, that characterizes the Kotzker's Torah. Rabbi Harold Schulweis once proposed this reflexive turn as a way to hear the Ten Commandments anew. He turned each commandment inward and challenged us to look deeply into the mirror of Torah. Let’s look at some of them, then, this way, in no special order…… The Sixth Commandment, for example, teaches "You shall not murder." Within this is the commandment, "You shall not “murder” yourself." What are all the ways we daily murder ourselves? "You shall not steal... from yourself. " When do we steal from ourselves? What do we steal? And how do we make restitution? "You shall not covet...yourself." We covet when we simply cannot live knowing that a neighbor has possessions and position that aren't ours. We covet ourselves when we simply cannot live without all that was once ours but is no more. What are the attachments to the past that hold us back from the present and the future?

"Remember the Sabbath to keep it holy." Where is the sanctified Sabbath within you? Where in your life is a place of peace, your haven and refuge from competition and conflict? "Honor your father and mother...within you." What does it mean to carry a father's love or a mother's wisdom within? What has become of the fatherly and the motherly in you? "You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain." What were the promises and commitments I once made to myself that were subsequently broken, ignored, or allowed to slip quietly into lazy neglect? "You will have no other gods before Me...including yourself." When have I made of myself the measure of all things and the center of the universe? On the festival of Shavuot, we celebrate receiving the gift of Torah, the mirror of our souls. Hag Sameach,

The President’s Column

Shavuot, the commemoration of our receiving the Torah is almost upon us.. It is the event that ef-fectively created Jewish peo-ple. Our sages have compared Shavuot to a wedding between G-d and the Jewish people. As often seems to be the case, we find a parallel between our situa-tion and a current holiday. Soon, perhaps late June, we as a Con-gregation will gather to make some important decisions, about a relationship with the United Pentecostal Church that has ob-vious similarities to a wedding. As those who attended the Annu-al Meeting heard, the Executive Board and Board of Directors have been reviewing drafts of a Purchase and Sale Agreement and a Lease that David Baram has drawn up. At its May meeting the Board of Directors approved a proposed purchase price and discussed parts of the proposals and the process. The Executive Board discussed the Agreement and Lease and met with David and provided input and changes to the documents. David has re-drafted, and has shared drafts of both documents with the Church and the Executive Board, so each can propose changes. David has done an excellent job of making proposals that protect Beth Hillel, although we expect some give and take on the lease. Once we have documents that the Board has approved we will have a spe-cial Congregational meeting at which you will be asked to ap-prove the sale. Again, I want to remind you that nothing can or will be signed until we have the approval of the Congregation. As we approach the end of our fiscal year I again appeal to you to give generously to the ad book

for our upcoming fundraiser and if you have unpaid dues please, if you are able, please pay this month. Our cash flow situation has been very difficult. Looking back to May, we had an-other successful Shabbat dinner in memory of Abe Morrison with close to 80 people participating. Thanks again to Steve Miller, Tammi Kraushaar and the rest of the Shabbat dinner crew; as al-ways, it was outstanding. Sister-hood had its annual fashion show and spaghetti supper. With more than 170 people in attendance we saw fashions from Soft Sur-roundings featuring our own Sis-terhood models. With a special Kiddish, we helped Rabbi Gary celebrate the 40th anniversary of his Ordination. We joined our friends at HHC for another Satur-day morning Shabbat service. Also, we enjoyed a Friday Shab-bat service with a return visit from the current Hartford area young Israeli Emissaries, had another informative Schmooze and Lunch, had a Library Book Schmooze, and had a home Fri-day Shabbat service at the home of Bob and Judy Dobrow, to whom we extend a special thank you. A very busy, varied and in-teresting month! Thank you to all the people who worked very hard to put all these programs togeth-er. Without the constant support of these volunteers we would not have these programs or the vi-brant community that is Beth Hil-lel. June is another busy month high-lighted by our Comedy Show and Auction on Sunday, June 8th. There is still time to get your res-ervation into the office. Don’t miss out on this entertaining evening. And this year we are celebrating Shavuot with Beth

Ahm who will be joining us for a light dinner and an evening of study on Tuesday, June 3rd. I hope you will be able to make it. Until next month….. Jackie

Our heartiest congratulations to Phyllis for receiving this well deserved honor.

Thank you to all who made our annual Spaghetti Supper and Fashion Show an over-whelming success. Co-chairs Marla Cohen and Beth Gold-berg did a wonderful job find-ing a store, lining up models and overseeing everything. Many thanks to Madalyn Levy who took reservations and set up the table arrangements. A special thank you to Arthur who made the delicious sauce and to Marion and Andy who are indispensable too!

Beth Hillel Synagogue Annual Meeting 2014

Report by Rabbi Gary Atkins I mention, whenever we have a minyan at prayer services, that we are praying as a “Kehilla Kedosha,” which means as a “Holy Congrega-tion” or “Holy Community.” As I wrote last year, these words, to me, embody the central quality of a synagogue – that it becomes a home for members in which they can pray/ study/ socialize/ identify/ celebrate the good parts of the lifecycle / mourn and get comfort for the sad. Like any complex or-ganism, a Kehilla Kedosha is a del-icate grouping of many parts and organs, each making its unique contribution to the whole. It is a family, with the dynamics of a fami-ly, in all senses of the word. It has been a full year that is draw-ing to a close. We have seen births and deaths, we have drawn togeth-er after a time of disagreement as to the future of the congregation, and we have been considering op-tions for our future…. All of which reflect the essential health and soundness of the synagogue. We have many congregants who have made Beth Hillel Synagogue their synagogue home for 40 or even 50 years or more. This core of mem-bership gives us maturity and wis-dom – along with traditions that should be cherished. It is appropri-ate to be proud of our strengths. It has been my honor to lead this congregation as your rabbi for the past eight years… and I recently celebrated “40 years since my ordi-nation.” Iris and I have made Beth Hillel Synagogue our home. You have become our extended family. We will celebrate Iris’ 67th birthday at services in early June (Saturday, June 7…and she’ll be baking as part of the Home Kashrut Certifica-tion Program). The years often seem to fly by…

Part of our annual meeting in-volves adopting a budget for the coming year. I know the financial challenges that we all face. I take the opportunity to remind you that I have shared in contributing toward the synagogue’s financial future by accepting a substantial reduction in salary for the coming year…. in addition to the ongoing donations and contributions that Iris and I give, as do you. I continue to note that our congregational donations listed in our “Chai-lites” are greater than those of many larger congre-gations. That is but one example of your support for the synagogue. BHS continues to provide many truly fine programs and services… and I invite you again, as I do eve-ry year, to take advantage of them to the fullest. I intellectually know that many people find “their level” of involvement – and your choice to affiliate and pay dues is itself a commitment that should not be minimized. I truly think you cannot find a synagogue – even one larger than ours – that offers a more meaningful and attractive set of programs for its members. As just some examples, this past year we continued to have a won-derful Scholar-in-Residence /Library Shabbat, I taught my fall and spring Adult Education clas-ses. My “Lunch and Learn” pro-gram has had an enjoyable year. We have had a series of meaning-ful Shabbat speakers, Shabbat din-ners (especially the annual Abe Morrison Memorial one), and Shabbat Under the Stars pro-grams. We have expanded service outreach with monthly “Home Shabbat Evening Services” and Shabbat mornings quarterly at He-brew Health Care. The House Committee has worked hard throughout the year; the Ritual Committee likewise. The office and the custodial staff have given of themselves much more than if they

considered it “just a job.” The Is-rael Affairs, Library, and Adult Education Committees have pro-vided meaningful programs for the benefit of congregants. The Ritual Committee and I have to-gether kept services running in a smooth and organized pattern. The Chesed Caring Committee continues to reach out to congre-gants who are ill or in need of support. Sisterhood and Brother-hood contribute greatly… both financially and programmatically. I have tried to be aware of events in the lives of my congregants. My one continuing frustration is that I am not always made aware of them and am thus not able to respond appropriately. I continue to be involved and “invested” in both the Jewish and larger communities. I remain one of the leaders of the Bloomfield Interfaith Association. I am proud to note that I anticipate being elected as incoming President of the Greater Hartford Rabbinic Association next month. I also continue to be one of the chap-lains for the Bloomfield Police Department. We should have pride in our syn-agogue and its strengths, as we work to make it even better. We have much to offer prospective members, and our Membership Committee under David Nemirow and Joel Neuwirth is trying to at-tract them. I urge all to have a positive, “can do” outreach atti-tude. To restate again what I wrote be-fore, “I thank you for the privilege of serving as your rabbi... your teacher and spiritual guide. May we be blessed with wisdom to respond to the challenges of the coming year.” Rabbi Gary Atkins Your Rabbi

The CHESED CARING COMMITTEE continues to provide comfort to the congregants of Beth Hillel Synagogue. The Hebrew word "chesed" does not have a precise English equivalent but is probably closest to "loving-kindness." In the Jewish moral tradition, "chesed" is associated with love, giving, and altruism. For congregants who are ill, hospitalized, undergoing rehab, or otherwise in need of

prayers and well wishes, our committee members are very generous with their time. We send cards of encouragement; we visit people in hospitals or their homes, rehab, or nursing home facilities; we call to let them know that they are in our thoughts and our prayers. On occasion, we provide meals and an occasional ride. We have challot and small bottles of grape juice to share just before Shab-bat. When we offer a chamsa/dove as a "good luck charm" - we see faces light up. We, in return,

are blessed by the knowledge that we are providing comfort to those most in need.

We can only provide our services if/when we are aware of the need. If you or a loved one wish to be on the receiving end of our services, you may call me (Iris) directly (860-726-9312) or leave a message at the synagogue office. Privacy will always be protected - unless you wish to extend

the network of well wishers!
