Travis Lord: It's probably a story you've told a thousand times, but our readers are curious -- how did you get into the cigar business?

Rocky Patel: I started the company out of my garage in Cali-fornia. I used to be an attorney in Beverly Hills, and of course ended up hanging out with actors on movie sets. There was a lot of downtime and everyone was smoking cigars, so I started too. I liked them, but many of the cigars and all of the packag-ing seemed very bland to me. One night while smoking cigars at Arnold Schwarzenegger's restaurant Schatzi in Santa Monica I had a vision of an even better cigar. That was the night I decided to make my own cigars with unique blends and exciting packaging. I traveled all over Nicara-gua and Honduras to learn about and sample different tobaccos. I made hundreds of blends to refi ne my palate. After several years of paying my dues I became more and more passionate and motivated and the company grew from there.

What is the best part of your job?

The thing I enjoy the most, of course, is blending the cigars themselves. I am constantly intrigued by the creation of new and novel fl avor profi les, unique tobacco, and creating blends never before made in history. I enjoy using tobacco that other blenders don’t use, and I like to push the envelope and try new things. This goes hand in hand with implementing high quality standards to ensure that my blends are delivered in the optimum form.

You have a reputation for being one of the most accessible and friendly fi gures in the cigar industry. Your numerous appear-ances at cigar events and stores are the stuff of legend among cigar fans. How do you balance all of the publicity and travel with your other responsibilities in addition to leading a personal life?

It can be very diffi cult. I feel like I run an offi ce from the road. It is like organized chaos. This interview right now is a great example. I’m in the car, stuck in traffi c and late for a meeting, and I am still working. My wheels are always turning from the time I wake up until my head hits the pillow. When I have down time while traveling, I’m imagining new blends, new packaging, and new marketing ideas. In the evenings I do try to have a good time as much as possible, and my fun and my work blend together very easily. You can’t accomplish anything while you sleep, but that’s why they’re called “dreams”.

We're very excited about the Prodigy. It's fun to see so many people in the offi ce smoking the same cigar at the same time and loving it. Early feedback from cus-tomers only confi rms that this is a great cigar. We are certainly honored to be the exclusive vendor. Please tell us a bit about selecting the tobacco for this blend and how you came up with the right combination.

We wanted to make something that has a lot of fl avor and character that is also well-balanced. We used a blend of tobacco from my fi elds in Nicaragua and Honduras, and fi nished it off

with an oily Ecuadorian Habano wrapper. It has a lot of fl avor, spice, nuttiness and caramel. I wanted to make a cigar that smokes well and has a fl avor unavailable in any other cigar. I wanted to make a blend for you that would refl ect that mission, and I think we have succeeded.

Your company recently entered into a partnership with EO Brands (manufacturers of premium brands Cubao, Murcielago & 601). Can you comment on the benefi ts of this partnership and what changes we might be seeing with EO Brand cigars in the future?

The EO Brand partnership allows us to expand horizontally in the market. Adding their new perspective gives us another angle to infi ltrate the market. It is a challenge to use a totally different blending, marketing and packaging strategy, but one I think will benefi t both companies and allow us to push the envelope. Eddie, Erik and I are great friends, but we have different styles of blending and marketing. We’re a great fi t together, and combin-ing our skills can only make the end result even stronger. Some of the changes to come are a new blend for the 601 Red Label, and new packaging on all the 601 lines. We will also be lowering pricing on Cubao, Murcialago and the 601 to provide high quality cigars at an even better value.

Since the "cigar boom" a number of trends have become popular. Cigars grew fatter, short, fat sizes became more popular and two-tone wrappers caught on. Most recently, we've seen premium cigar manufacturers offering lines below $5/stick. Can you share your perspective on these trends and where you see the cigar industry going in the future?

Some of these trends will stick around, and some of them will not. I think the 60+ ring-gauge trend is here to stay. There is a large section of the customer base that enjoys them. I think the two-tone wrapper trend is a fl y-by-night thing. It’s something people fi nd interesting to try once, but it won’t last forever. The $5 cigars are a necessity caused by the economy. However, very few cigars at that price point can maintain consistent quality. The old saying remains true, “You get what you pay for”. That’s not to say a $5 stick can’t be good, but a real quality $5 cigar is very hard to fi nd. However, customers only smoke what they can afford, so companies will always be trying to deliver cigars to those customers who want a $5 smoke.

The freedom to smoke cigars is being limited worldwide with public smoking laws, increased tobacco taxes and restrictions on fl avored cigars. As a leading cigar manu-facturer, how do these rules and regulations affect your bottom line, and the cigar industry as a whole?

One of the biggest problems in our industry is dealing with federal and state regulations. Handmade premium cigars are so different from all the other tobacco prod-ucts, but they get lumped in together. We need to edu-cate legislators who do not realize that over 300 hands touch each cigar. They need to understand why we cannot bear any more taxes. Premium cigars are more similar to fi ne wine than to other tobacco products.

Bans on legal, luxury products are unneces-sary and unfair. In this day and age with Face-book, e-mail, and so much other technological communications, sitting down together and smok-ing a cigar is the only way to have a “real” conver-sation. You can communicate with someone while smoking together in ways that are becoming lost in today’s world. There is no study ever made that

proved smoking premium cigars causes any disease. Further restric-tions and taxes on cigars are my biggest concern when I go to sleep at night. I fear the government more than I fear the competition.

We owe a lot to Alan Rubin, owner of the famous Alec Bradley cigar brand. His top-rated lines like Prensado, Tempus and Fam-ily Blend are the toast of the cigar industry, and we're honored to have him create brands exclusively for our company.

The Kensington line was fi rst introduced in 2008, fl aunting a fl awless and supple Connecticut wrapper and binder which cradles a mouth-watering blend of Piloto Cubano, San Vicente Indonesia and Olor tobaccos. This is a cigar with enough complexity to pair nicely with your favorite wine or spirit, but is mild enough to be enjoyed any time of the day.

Blending such a great cigar is not an easy process -- in fact, it took Rubin a year of careful experimentation to hit the nail on the head. This was the most fun part of the process for us, smoking cigar after cigar! When Kensington began to fl y off our shelves, we knew it was all worth it.

The original Kensington line became a go-to stick for many of our customers, but we realized we were leaving Maduro fans in the dark. So we commissioned an entirely new blend for the Kensington Maduro. Again, we were blown away by Rubin's mastery of cigar manufacturing, relishing in the fact that an upscale cigar this tasty could be sold for such a low price.

Rubin himself admits that Kensington could be sold for much more. But we are too proud of this stick to charge more just because we can. The second in a growing number of two-tone cigars to be introduced this year, these cigars are exquisitely made with both a Connecticut Shade and Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper. Saying these are "two cigars in one" is not quite doing them justice. They really are singular sensations, and the transition between wrappers is stark but satisfying. The spicy start is met with an earthy foundation and begins to pick up no-ticeable notes of chocolate as you reach the dual-wrapper borderline. Cross over and you're met with much more full-bodied fl avors of tobacco and leather. Sweet and nutty throughout, this stick nevertheless becomes quite strong toward the nub, so be prepared. A great cigar for the afi cionado who thinks he's seen and smoked everything.

Named the #15 best cigar of 2009 by Cigar Afi cionado, this stick gets high praise for its nuanced use of black and red pepper spice alongside notes of salted, roasted nuts. In the mid-90's Nick Perdomo made these delicious Cuban-seed sticks available to the local community as a limited run that was much sought-after. Now in mass production, it's your turn to enjoy these Nicaraguan gems. They're available in an earthy, cedary Sun-grown wrapper, a spicy, chocolatey Maduro or mild and buttery Connecticut.

Perdomo has made a bold and brave move toward offer-ing more budget-level sticks, banking on their ability to produce top-quality cigars at extremely competitive prices. The sumptuous Jalapa Valley Ligero long fi ll is what gives this cigar its peppery kick, but the masterful blend is what brings out the complex notes like chocolate and coffee. An incredible value for the quality of the ingredients, the construction is no joke either. We searched the Internet and couldn't fi nd a single person complaining... this is an immaculately made cigar in every sense of the word.

Looking for power and value in the same package? These Nicaraguan puros are priced ridiculously low for the quality. It's a full-bodied, heavy-in-the-hand smoke. Be prepared when you light it up to be smacked upside the head by a blast of pepper. The cigar smooths out into a more mellow but tobacco-rich fl avor, with hints of wood, earth and a subtle sweetness. There are a lot of similarities with this cigar and Rocky Patel's Edge. body fl avor. Notes of leather, creamy hazelnut, almond and

oak are shared between an Ec-uadorian shade wrapper on the body, and a Nicaraguan Criollo

The Casa Torano is a buttery-smooth stick with loads of creaminess in its copious light grey smoke. The Java is absolutely amazing for its top-quality tobacco and fl avors of coffee con leche, cocoa and creaminess. The Maduro version errs more toward a conventional smoke as the trademark woody core starts to de-velop along with the sweeter fl avors. In comparison to the Natural, the Maduro has a slightly fuller body, less coffee creaminess and more tobacco richness. They are both some of thebest-constructed cigars on the market.

Drew Estate has another fl avored hit on its hands. The Isla del Sol is a sugar-tipped revelation, full of mocha and coffee notes. It makes for a fantastic after-break-fast cigar, but it's a mellow and creamy treat any time of day.

Guillotine cutters make it easy to cut a small portion of the cap off (just

enough to expose the inner binder and fi ller.) You should see one or several lines around the diameter of the head of the cigar — this is the cap. Cut above the topmost line to avoid unravelling the wrapper. Cap should almost be fl ush with the blade.Pros: Cuts large portion of the cap to reveal full diameter of the cigar for maximum airfl ow and smoke density.Cons: May compromise structural integrity of cap if not used correctly. Improperly cut cigars will make the wrapper unravel.

P unch cutters are popular due to their portability and ease of use. A sharp-

ened cylinder or “punch” simply cuts out a small hole in the cap of the cigar, which makes this cutter best for maintaining overall integrity. Many come on key chains, guaranteeing that you will never be with out your cutter… so long as you remember your keys!Pros: Portable. Maintains the cigar cap bet-ter than a V or guillotine cutter. Easy to use.Cons: The small punch hole can sometimes cause the cigar to smoke “hot.” Creates a hard draw on larger cigars.

San Marcoby Camacho

The San Marco is a brand-new addition to our line of exclusive brands. A budget-conscious blend from Camacho, it sacrifi ces none of the fl avor of a premium stick. The Sumatra-seed wrapper leaf and Honduran binder/fi ller was produced on Camacho's own farm, while the Dominican tobacco was cultivated by Davidoff. You'll be greeted by an earthy foundation as the spicyness of this cigar takes hold. It's not at all overwhelming but certainly is ever-present, detectable from the tip of the tongue to the back of the palate. As it smokes, the San Marco shifts from earthy to woody fl avors, hint-ing at sweet cedar and caramel. You may also notice a slightly fl oral note weaving in and out of this complex and well-balanced smoke. With an easy burn and a low price tag, we're certainly proud of Camacho's work and think you will be too.
