Ctenosaura quinquecarinata

For Ages: 12 & up, with adult

supervision

Pet lifespan: 10 - 15 years

Pet Size: Up to 18 inches

General Information

General description: Clubtail iguanas are

beautiful lizards with spiny tails that are used as

defense when threatened. These iguanas are born a

bright green color fading to brown as the animal

ages. The females tend to turn a uniform drab

brown in color, and males develop tones of black,

blue and yellow on their bodies and heads over the

brown background.

Natural Range: Native to Nicaragua and Costa Rica

and is found in subtropical or tropical dry forests.

Feeding: Club-tailed iguanas are omnivorous (eat

both plant and animal matter). Their diet should

include vegetables, fruit, insects, and prepared

foods (such as canned lizard food).

Watering: Using a spray bottle, aim the water at

the glass, so y iguana can lap up the water droplets.

This method also helps keep the humidity level up.

Lighting: All iguanas require ultraviolet lighting to

maintain good health. Ultraviolet lighting is

recommended for 12 hours per day. A timer is

recommended to maintain an accurate lighting

schedule.

Things to remember

For the best health and well being of your new

pet, it is important to remember to take it

directly home. If you have more shopping or

errands to complete, consider picking up your

pet last. This will ensure the animal

encounters the least amount of stress

possible. Have the new terrarium completely

set up before bringing your new friend

"home". Additionally, make sure your new

family member is allowed enough time to

adjust to its new home. Wait three or four

days before attempting to handle your pet and

always supervise children when they interact

with pets.

Safety & Cleanliness: Please remember that

all pets may bite or scratch, and may transmit

a disease to humans. Keep your pet’s home

clean and wash your hands before and after

handling your pet or cleaning their home.

Infants, young children, pregnant women,

people with compromised immune systems,

and the infirm or elderly are at a greater risk

of infections and should use caution when in

contact with the pet or its habitat.

Nutrition

Staple diet: Provide your club-tail iguana

with a specially fortified iguana diet

Insects: Gut-loading the live crickets will

help your iguana get superior nutrition

from these insects.

Greens: Dark leafy greens like collards,

dandelion greens, parsley and kale are

good choices. Feeding spinach may cause

calcium binding and Romaine provides

little nutrition.

Edible flower blossoms: Roses,

nasturtium or other edible blossoms

Water: Change and fill your iguana’s

water bowl with clean water every day.

Habitat

Housing: A 40 to 50 gallon aquarium

with a screen lid is essential for proper

air exchange is ideal.

Substrate: 3" inches of Repti-Bark and

Bed-Beast is recommended.

Decoration: Cork bark can be added as

low hiding areas. Multiple climbing

branches are necessary.

Temperature/Humidity: ambient

temperature of 80 and 90 degrees with a

basking temperature of 95 to 105
