Best Practices Paper
Introduction
In this study we will look at some of the different companies that are known for the best
HR programs and happiest employees in the globalized working world today. When
researching several different companies in magazines such as Fortune there was a realization
that many of the most happiest companies employees wise are located in Texas.
Discussion of organization #1 that exhibits best practices in HR
Boston Consulting Group was ranked 3rd in the FORTUNE 500 for best companies to
work for in 2014. BCG offers several different financial packages and benefits for its employees.
Managerial staff works well with lower employee’s staff. Higher ups in the hierarchy are
understanding of employee’s personal situations and the need for a flexible work arrangement
or the need to take time off. Boston consulting group also has several insurance coverage’s as
well as packages and perks as well when it comes to taking care of its employees.
HR Best Practice Example A for Organization #1
It is noted that Boston Consulting Group in nearly half female and half male, thus
promoting a diverse work force and not prejudice towards a certain sex. Promoting equal
opportunity for both sexes is key to having good HR and being recognized in the global business
world today. This allows for more women to feel and be challenged and comfortable in the
work place in the work place.
HR Best Practice Example B for Organization #1
Boston Consulting Group also does one of the best practices in paying for one hundred
percent of healthcare costs for their employees. Paying for one hundred percent of healthcare
costs for employees is a huge incentive benefit that would make employees more happy and
want to work harder for their employer. It takes burden off of workers because they don't
need to exert extra stress on looking for decent to good health insurance policies. Which can
be beneficial in creating less work stress within the work place due to people who don't come
in stressed out worrying about their health rather than what needs to get done in the work
place.
Discussion of organization #2 that exhibits best practices in HR
Ultimate Software was chosen for the many amenities that the company offers its
employees needs and truly makes them happy. “I just celebrated my seven-year anniversary
with Ultimate Software. Prior to Ultimate, my longest tenure with any organization was less
than three years. I'm staying because I'm constantly finding new opportunities to be challenged
and grow,” (Fortune, 2014) is a prime example of employee satisfaction within the company.
It’s also known for its great atmosphere, great rewards, as well as demographic within the
working world. Ultimate software also offers compressed work weeks to those employees that
want or need it do to their living situation and lifestyle choices.
HR Best Practice Example A for Organization #2
Every employee is also a share holder in the company, and they look to hire and 300
employees this year alone. " You’re a shareholder of this HR and payroll software designer, and
you watched its stock price rise in 2013 from $85 to $155 . . . . . No wonder turnover is only
1.9%." (Fortune, 2014) Ultimate Software was ranked as one of the best companies when it
came to employee happiness, much of it doing with this reason of employees becoming part
shareholders in the company upon being hired.
HR Best Practice Example B for Organization #2
Ultimate Software again, also does one of the best practices in paying for one hundred
percent of healthcare costs for their employees. This is huge, well at least from my stand point
in having my health care covered rather than worry about all kind of expensive bills. This
practice is offering indirect financial compensation to employees which is a form of benefit that
creates more incentive for the employee to want to work for that company. Paying for one
hundred percent of healthcare costs for employees is a huge incentive benefit that would make
employees more happy and want to work harder for their employer. It takes burden off of
workers because they don't need to exert extra stress on looking for decent to good health
insurance policies. Which can be beneficial in creating less work stress within the work place
due to people who don't come in stressed out worrying about their health rather than what
needs to get done in the work place.
Discussion of organization #3 that exhibits best practices in HR
David Weekley Homes have been known for years for the good homes that they build
such as my own, as well as the great HR amenities and work environment they have for all of
their employees. David Weekley is continually able to solve the HR and employee problems in
the work place. They have offered many valued solutions to employees that seek to have an
issue solved whether it be professional or personal. By working closely and communicating
with their employees about what matters most it creates for a better work environment and
that pushes off onto the costumers that they interact and do business with.
HR Best Practice Example A for Organization #3
David Weekley Homes matches employees’ 401(k) contributions one hundred percent
of what the employee puts into it, up to 8% of their salary. Which is good in today's business
world because many 401(k) are drying up or just not worth the money put into them for
retirement and the fact that David Weekley matches up one hundred percent for 8% of one's
salary isn't heard of much in the working world, or at least not so much anymore. "401(k) plans
can also include things such as tax breaks, low-cost investment options, and to save and invest
enough to support yourself in retirement." (Brandon, 2010)
HR Best Practice Example B for Organization #3
The other practice that really stuck out was that team employees could help co-workers
who have suffered a financial loss caused by personal tragedy; through payroll deductions, to
an emergency fund. Which would then be giving to co-worker that was in need of financial aid.
Another financial benefit that David Weekley offers is scholarships that can be offered up to a
certain amount every year per child. " . . . . . provides four-year college scholarships of up to
$2,000 a year per child." (Fortune, 2014) These to benefits go hand in hand in creating a good
practice of taking care of employees personal and at homes lives with family and friends as well
as self health.
Application of Best Practices to Future Career
From what I have learned from this research for this paper and from the class is the
overall goal is to make sure employees needs are taken care of as much as possible for the best
output work wise. If I were to apply this in the future depending on where I line up in the
company there will be greater opportunity to have higher productivity out of my fellow co-
workers. Taking care of financial needs such as health care should be a big thing going forward
seeing as the future of health insurance is unclear right now and having it covered would be
something of great incentive to me that I would try to take advantage of in the future when I
am out of college and in the working world. It would also be good to either look for or promote
diversity in the work place. It's both good for the culture as well as the companies public
image. With a diverse work force different complex problems within the company can be
solved through several different out looks. This creates innovation in the work place which
creates change. Change allows for the company to grow over time making for a company that
can create much profit.
Conclusion/Summary
We can see several different types of practices that create several benefits and
amenities for employees which then create a greater incentive for employees to want to work
for those companies and in return the companies are able to do greater things with their
business ventures that year. More companies should move to better practices for their HR
departments to create better opportunities and work atmospheres for their employees. This
can create a more reliable, valuable workforce for companies because co-workers want to give
it their all for the company they work for because their needs and wants are nearly met. When
people graduate college many go to companies that offer the best benefit packages looking for
jobs because they want to feel secure in their life with what they need. This creates high
opportunity jobs which creates competition in the workplace which all translates into higher
productivity for the companies that get the formula right.
