Introduction
• Transport sector emits large amounts of harmful substances such as carbon dioxide
• Green (energy efficient, clean and silent) freight railway transport is today possible
• Railways seen as pioneers when it comes to electrification of transport
• Potential to transport goods completely free of greenhouse gas emissions
Electrified routes in the national railway network in selected European countries

Noise emissions of railway noise
In the night: Railways are very noisy!
Motivation for this best practice case • Task & Aims: Identification and evaluation of recent technical
innovations that support the greening of rail freight transport
• Analysis was based on existing experience, available information and findings of ongoing and completed research projects
• Application of SWIFTLY Green methodology
• Provide to the Toolbox a bunch of measures to tackle most recent rail transport challenges
Identified railway innovations
Information about measures described in detail and evaluated in fact sheets (and included in the Toolbox)
• Example: Noise reduction of an open bulk freight wagon with Y25 bogies with application of available measures in the Toolbox
Scenario: Measures to reduce noise emissions of freight vehicles
Scenario: Measures to reduce noise emissions of freight vehicles
Vehicle innovations related to the bogie
Scenario: Measures to reduce noise emissions of freight vehicles
Operation and regulation measures
Monitoring Incentives
Noise-dependent track access charges with “freight vehicle sharp” noise emission measurements to measure the actual noise emission
Conclusions
• More than thirty measures to improve rail freight transport in the fields of alternative propulsion, vehicle innovations, operation and regulation, telematics and transshipment technologies
• Measures available with… • Direct impacts: Reduction of noise emissions and greenhouse gas
emissions
• Indirect impacts: Modal shift, transport flow improvement
