READER’S CHOICEAWARD WINNERS

After counting nearly 1,300 ballots, taking photos and talking to first place winners, we offer what was voted as your favorites in the community.

Our readers have spoken and they have said just who is best in the Roanoke Valley for more than 80 categories in The Daily Herald’s annual readers poll — Best of the Valley.

It is a way for area folks and visitors alike to express appreciation for area dishes, businesses, professionals, educators, shop-ping venues and top brags from where the best place to worship to who has the cleanest restrooms.

Part of the fun is giving out prizes, too. Three winners have received Shell gas gift cards thanks to New Dixie Oil who provided the prizes. In third place winning a $25 gas card is James Walker, the second place $50 gas card went to Thea Zacharopoulos and the first place prize getter is Donna Wilson, who received a $100 gas card.

In order to keep up with life, modern technology and in an attempt to keep ballot counting more efficient — this year was the first year the Herald offered online voting. Let us know what you think.

After you take a look at this year’s edition, if there is a category you would like to see in next year’s poll, contact

Advertising Director Carol Crittendon at [email protected] or give her a call at 252-537-25050, ext. 225.

Meantime, take a look at who got top nods around the Valley. This special section is a great way to find new re-sources for everyday needs — the next restaurant to try for a certain dish or beverage, a new place to try for a haircut, salon or spa service, congratulate the top doc, coach, teacher, etc. And, really, who has the best custom-er service and cleanest restrooms? Definitely items that can make or break a customer come-back visit. It’s all in here, all you have to do is just turn the page. Happy read-ing!

— Kris Smith, news editor

Best turnout, readers vote for favorites

Kris Smith | The Daily HeraldCathy Glover, owner of C&W’s Candy & Gift Shop Plus Florist, said the staff tries to provide good customer service. ‘We take each customer on an individual basis — wedding, birthday, gift baskets, funeral — we aim to be very compassionate and to give people more for their money,’ Glover said. She shared the florist shop has been in business more than 17 years. ‘We are very happy, thankful and proud,’ Glover shared. She said they will keep striving for the best for customer service and look forward to serving the Roanoke Valley for many more years. Best Carpet & Flooring 1. Lloyd’s Decorating Center2. Lowe’s Home Improvement3. Stephen’s Outlet

Stephen Hemelt | The Daily HeraldLloyd’s Decorating Center has been a Roanoke Valley institution for more than 60 years. Owner Al Eatman has been part of the operation for 18 years, crediting the location’s best carpet and flooring recognition to a staff of veterans with a reputation for quality. “Our biggest asset is my coworkers,” Eatman said. “LaRose Johnson (pictured), Sheldon Deaton and Jeff Haslip have been here for a long time. They have become part of the community. Our installers: Troy Williams, Donny Spence and Graham Taylor are just good. They are with us everyday, so people know who is putting their carpet down. If they have a problem, they can come to us.”

Best Grocery Store1. Food Lion2. Walmart3. Just Save Foods

Roger Bell | The Daily HeraldSteve Kidd, assistant store manager for Food Lion on Roanoke Avenue, felt surprised and pleased by Food Lion’s selection as Best Grocery Store. With plenty of grocery options in the Valley, Kidd said he believes customer service sets Food Lion apart. “If the customer needs help, we help them,” Kidd said. “And if they can’t find something in the store, we take them and show them where it is, we don’t just tell them.’ Pictured is Nancy Jones at her register at Food Lion on Roanoke Avenue.

Best Hardware Store1. Lowe’s Home Improvement2. Halifax Farmer’s Supply Co.3. Gaston Hardware

Stephen Hemelt | The Daily HeraldMore than 100 well-trained employees and a singular focus led to Lowe’s Home Improvement being named Best Hardware Store by readers of The Daily Herald, according to Roanoke Rapids store manager Eliot Smith. “The focus is on the customers,” he said. “Customer focus is central in the building. There is training and constant awareness that customers are No. 1 to us.” Pictured are Latasha High, Ron Kingsbury, Terri Sykes and Jeff Brown.

Best Restaurant1. david’s Restaurant2. Logan’s Roadhouse3. Hunam Restaurant

Being unique and offering a variety of menu items was one of several reasons david’s Restaurant was named Best Restaurant in the Roanoke Valley. “We get a lot of people off of I-95 because we are recommended by Triple A,” said David Watson, proprietor and executive chef of david’s Restaurant. “They want something that they can’t get at most restaurants on I-95. We strive to purchase high quality ingredients.” He noted there were a lot of restaurants in the Roanoke Valley but not a lot of unique ones. “Most of the restaurants seem to be chain restaurants,” he said. “It would be the same if they were in Roanoke Rapids, Rocky Mount or Petersburg.”

Kris Smith | The Daily Herald

Best Waitstaff1. david’s Restaurant2. Oscar’s Restaurant3. Logan’s Roadhouse

Kris Smith | The Daily HeraldDavid Watson, proprietor and executive chef at david’s Restaurant, was honored when he heard his restaurant had received Best Waitstaff. One reason he felt they received the honor was because many of the waitstaff had been there a long time. ‘We empower waiters and waitresses to ‘yes’ to the customers,’ he said. For instance, if someone wants something special that is not on the menu but the ingredients are available, Watson and staff will make it. “We have strived since we opened in 1999 to give personal attention to the guest,” he said. Some of the waitstaff, from left, are Joy Gilcrest, Watson, Kathy Freeman and Jessica Winship.

Best Menu1. david’s Restaurant2. Cracker Barrel Old Fashioned Store3. Logan’s Roadhouse

A menu with a lot of variety was a reason cited by david’s Restaurant proprietor and executive chef David Watson on why the restaurant received the Best Menu. “We have large Canadian lobster tails,” he said. “As far as I know, no one else serves it.” The menu features several signature dishes not found in the Roanoke Valley. Dishes like Hatteras Fish Soup and Veal Hart, a dish Watson created about 20 years ago. The biggest seller is the Charleston Flounder. “It is something I have been doing in Eastern North Carolina for a long time,” he said. He didn’t create the dish but a friend, who had been in the restaurant industry did. A dish, Chicken Laura, was created due to a customer’s allergies. It is a chicken breast stuffed with broccoli and cheese wrapped in bacon with a reduction of heavy cream and squash.

Best Buffet1. david’s Restaurant2. Hunam Restaurant3. Ralph’s Barbecue

Best Buffet honors went to david’s Restaurant for their predominately Southern-style buffet on Sundays. David Watson, proprietor and executive chef of david’s Restaurant, said it is offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. every Sunday. “I think maybe the reason people like it is because it is more like the food they would cook at home.” The buffet features fried chicken,

flounder, real mashed potatoes, homemade cheese biscuits, pecan pie and chocolate chess pie. Watson said in addition to those items, there are three other meats, several vegetables, a salad bar and a dessert bar.

When asked why he thought the Hilton Garden Inn was voted Best Hotel, Travis Bushore, front office manager and director of sales, said he believes it is because of the hotel’s little extras and community involvement. Open since 2008, not only does the hotel offer rooms and catering, but also a putting contest, grilling out and ‘we like to take part in community events — Ducky Derby,

Best Hotel/Motel1. Hilton Garden Inn 2. Hampton Inn3. Comfort Suites

Wounded Warrieor Project’ — they donate rooms for causes. He said he definitely wants to say thanks to the readers for voting for ‘the hotel in the middle of the cornfield’ — as Hilton employees affectionately refer to their place of employment, he explained.

Stephen Hemelt | The Daily HeraldQuality products for customers and expertise from store sales associates at Lowe’s Home Improvement make it the best the lawn and garden center.
