with lots of interesting grain to ensure each piece is as

unique as the tree it has been crafted from.”

Acorns to Oak TreesDavid began to make furniture outside the UK as costs of

wood and labour spiralled. In Romania he found amazing,

sensitively managed forests and people happy to learn how

to craft furniture using our traditional techniques including

dovetail and mortice & tenon joints.

When James and David set up Four Corners in 1999 it was

obvious to both of them the furniture should be made in

Romania and Sue should design the kitchens. She was

relieved to find James was happy to do the deliveries!

In the Carpathian Alps they bought a dairy farm and

converted it to a workshop with state of the art tools;

bought their own kiln to dry the wood and employed Doina

and Cristi Stania, whom David met in his first forays into

Romania. Doina and Cristi now have 25 skilled craftsmen &

women working for us. James visits every month. Having our

own workshop means we can control the quality and have

the flexibility to offer tailor made furniture.

The trees we use have been individually chosen and there is a

no clear-felling policy. These logs are often pulled out by

horse to minimise ecological damage. We want our furniture

to be as eco-friendly as it can be. In crafting the furniture we

end up with lots of off cuts and saw dust. None of it is

wasted. The off cuts heat our workshop and are now

available to buy in our stores for your home too; The

sawdust is used to keep the local tomato plants warm.

Keeping it green we have recently designed and built solar

powered kilns to dry our wood.

Once the furniture has been crafted the oak or pine it is

hand finished to our customer's requirements or primed

ready for hand painting and, then carefully bubble wrapped

awaiting shipment to us in the Cotswolds.

David and Sue in the meantime, have decided to retire and

spend their well earned rest sailing, playing tennis and

enjoying the next generation of boys already obsessed with

wood, glue and tools. James no longer has to do the

deliveries as he's designing our furniture and kitchens and, is

supported by a great team that includes his wife Lisa who, as

the next generation of bottle washer, runs our Broadway

showroom.

We’d have to go back nearly 40 years to discover the acorn

from which Four Corners has grown. James’ father David set

up Ashworth’s Country Workshop, a cabinet makers,

crafting traditional furniture using time honoured

techniques. Quickly it became a family concern with Mum,

Sue, as chief cook, bottle washer and delivery woman as

well as designer of kitchens. Growing up around the family

business perhaps it was always inevitable one of their sons

would get the furniture bug. It was James who realised, one

month into his stockbroking job in the Square Mile, his

future was in dovetail joints.

Whether it is a dining table worthy of a castle, wine cellar

storage, somewhere to put your hi-fi or a 3m wide dresser we

can craft it for you.

This premium service is simply organised. With your

dimensions we can either help you design it or alternatively

you can provide us with a sketch and we will quote you a price

to hand craft your unique piece of furniture for you. You pay

and approximately 8 weeks later hey presto, you have the

custom built furniture you’ve been searching for years for!

A contemporary finish, the oil transforms the simple lines of

our furniture.

This work is done on an individual basis there is usually an 8-10

week lead time for the furniture. We also need to charge a

little bit more for this bespoke service.

For a Light Grey or White Oiled finish on our standard pieces

you’ll need to add a 10% fee to the cost of the oak furniture

you see in the brochure here. Should you wish us to use this

finish on our hand painted furniture or chairs we can of course

do this too. Please ask us for a quote.

As we make our own furniture we can customise our standard

pieces to your taste. We show our standard Oak pieces in our

brochure and these are simply finished in Danish Oil. This

protects the furniture and creating a warm finish we call Light

Oak. We are also happy to offer alternatives to suit your own

home.

Adding a dark stain can transform a piece of furniture.

Creating a more traditional finish or, with the right handles

converting it to a modern contemporary item. Shown here

are our Dark & Medium Oak stains, for this bespoke finish we

will need an 8-10 week lead time for the furniture.

The costs you see in this brochure are for our Light Oak

finish. You will need to add 10% to the cost of your furniture

for this bespoke service.

Limed & Weathered Finishes Distressed FurnitureDistressing is more of an art form. It involves removing some

of the soft fibres in parts, creating a worn feel to the wood

in some areas and ageing it in others. The furniture is then

stained in a creative way to give the piece the overall

appearance of an older item of furniture without looking

too contrived.

As this work is done on an individual basis there is usually an

8-10 week lead time for the furniture. We also need to

charge a little bit more for this bespoke service.

Like our weathered finish, for a distressed finish you will

need to add 20% to the basic price of our furniture.

Should you wish us to distress our hand painted furniture or

chairs we can of course do this too. Please ask us for a

quote.

Do you want your furniture to have a care worn or rustic

look? We can lime or weather your furniture too.

Liming furniture involves raising the grain of the wood with

a wire brush and then applying lime to it.

Weathering is a more complicated process involving the

removal of the soft fibres from the wood with a wire brush

and then staining the item. The furniture is then finished in

our warm medium oak stain and then to complete the

weathered look - we lime it.

With an 8 - 10 week lead time to add a limed finish to our

oak furniture you will need to add 15% to the cost of our

standard prices. For our more complex weathered finish you

will need to add 20% to the basic cost.

Should you wish us to weather or lime our hand painted

furniture or chairs we can of course do this too. Please ask us

for a quote.

Fitted Furniture

Crafting and fitting furniture for our customers starts with usunderstanding what they are looking for and ensuring the designmeets the brief and of course, the budget.

Our new Fitted brochure is available in store.

Wood throughout; oak, pine or hand painted maple, Four Cornersoffers a complete service; designing, crafting and fitting thefurniture for you. Each section of your furniture is a bespokecabinet fitted by craftsmen.

There is no melamine, no flat pack boxes, just beautiful woodfinished to your design at a sensible price.

So, how does it work? For a small fee our designers come to your home take detailedmeasurements and listen to your needs, designing your fittedpieces with you.

Once you’re happy with the design we’ll give you a fitting dateand your furniture will then be carefully crafted in Romania fromwood using traditional techniques.

Our fitting experts are fastidious about finish, the morechallenging the angle, the more wonky the wall the more theyrelish it. Sebastian and the team have fitted kitchens & furniture asfar away as Italy and the Isle of Man, so distance is no object.

The curvaceous doors of Four Corners latest range give a

contemporary twist to French style design. These curved

doors have been very popular with our bespoke and fitted

furniture customers for a while and to reflect this continuing

trend we have launched this range with 2 sideboards and an

extending table.

The solid oak extending table has a 40mm top and features

beautifully smooth runners with 2 leaves stored inside the

table. The leaves can be used individually or together; fully

extended it seats 10-12 people.

The sideboards have deep pan style drawers designed to

withstand the weight of dinner services and as always are

crafted with traditional dovetail joints.

As we make our furniture ourselves, as always, we can make

bespoke furniture for any room to complement this style too.

Larger tables can be made in this style too – please ask us

for details.

Hand crafted using traditional techniques it is shown here in

white oiled Oak with our premium stainless steel mushroom

knobs. As always the furniture can be finished to your tastes

including a choice of handles and knobs.

Our Hand Painted furniture range is inspired by both Frenchand English country styles.

The range is hand crafted from maple, with oak tops andcornices. Maple is ideal to create painted furniture. It is ahardwood, enabling it to withstand the knocks and bumpsof everyday life and, its smooth grain enables our paintingprofessionals to get a great finish when they hand paintyour piece. Table and cabinet tops are made from ourcharacterful European oak and coated in Danish Oil,providing a resilient and easily maintainable finish.

The cost of hand painting and the paint itself is included inthe price.

Little Green, Farrow & Ball and the hardwearing Dulux Diamond Finish are particularfavourites although we're happy to use anywater based eggshell finish.

If you want to create a focal point in your roombe bold and choose a statement colour.Alternatively choose a more neutral palette towork with your existing furniture and room.

As you choose your own paint colour and handles(please see pages 34-35 for handle options) you arecreating your own bespoke furniture at a sensible price.

It will be ready for you in approximately 4 weeks.

HandPaintedBedroom

As with the Hand Painted Dining & Living furniture the

bedroom range is crafted from the hardwood maple, and

features European oak tops and cornices creating a great

finish for the paint and showcases the Oak.

As you would expect each piece features traditional

craftsmanship including mortice & tenon and dovetail joints.

You can decide whether to opt for calming neutrals or bold

brights for contrast with your choice of eggshell paint and

the furniture will be hand painted by our professionals. This

together with a choice of handles (see the back of this

brochure for options) enables you to fully

customise your furniture.

It will be ready for you in

approximately 4 weeks.

The options are: An orthopaedic, a pocket sprung or, a latex mattress.Latex is a natural breathable product with very similar properties tomemory foam. QuakerOakDining

The Quaker Oak dining tables showcase the gorgeous lively

wood grain we love. It has colour and pattern variation, as

well as knots and medullary rays (white flowering). These

create a characterful piece of furniture as unique as the solid

European Oak from which they have been crafted.

Our tables come in a wide range of shapes and sizes. In

addition to the ones you see here, coming soon to the range

are oval tables. Included in the brochure are our regular

chairs and stools, others are available too. Please visit our

showrooms to try them out for comfort.

Our beautiful dressers, sideboards and butchers block

complement our tables and chairs. They come in a wide

variety of sizes. All are crafted using traditional techniques

A weathered grey finish to our traditional cabinetry is the key

ingredient to the English Grey range. It is a cost effective way

to furnish rooms in your home.

Hand crafted from sustainably sourced spruce and fir once

made, the pieces are individually weathered and finished in

contemporary warm grey oil.

Our standard pieces are shown here. In addition, as with all

our furniture, we can of course make a bespoke piece

especially for you. Please ask us for more details of this

Handles transform a piece of furniture. It will create a rustic, contemporary or traditional look to your cabinet. It’s a quick and

effective way to customise a piece of furniture to reflect your home.

Included in the price of your furniture are our “House” handles:

Many of our wooden and metal knobs

are available in both larger and smaller

sizes from 28mm to 60mm diameter

please ask us for details.

We have access to a huge range of

alternative knobs and handles. If you

would like further information please

talk to us. Alternatively if you would like

to supply your own handle to match

your existing furniture then this too is

possible.
