CHAPTER 1
Meet Our Schools “Conozca a nuestras escuelas”
In South Berwyn we have 6 elementary schools and 2 middle schools. The Ber-wyn schools are named Pershing, Piper, Hiawatha, Komensky,Irving, Emerson, Heritage, and Freedom. The first school in Berwyn was built in 1888. It had 2 classrooms with fire places. It was also used as a church. The photos show the original LaVergne School then and now.
CHAPTER 2
Growth and the Railroad “crecimiento y el ferrocarril”
This is a picture of the Berwyn train depot. This section of town is called The Depot Dis-trict, and has a lot of shops. Everyday people go to work on the trains. Berwyn was built up because of the railroad line. This is impor-tant because people could live in the suburbs and go to their jobs in Chicago. It only takes about twenty minutes to get to downtown Chicago by train.

CHAPTER 3
Managing Berwyn - “gestión de Berwyn”
There are many different government jobs in Berwyn Illinois. There are nine people in the city council because the city is broken up into eight wards. The Mayor presides over the council. Each ward has an aldermen that was elected by the people. Al-dermen are responsible to the residents and en-sure that they are repre-sented in the city council.

CHAPTER 4
City of Homes - “ciudad de los hogares”
Berwyn became a city on June 6, 1908. Did you know that berwyn has a Slogan? The slogan is part of the city’s logo. It is called “City of Homes” Berwyn has many differ-ent house designs. Most notable are the bungalow and Victorian. The Charles Piper house is an example of a Victorian style home. Charles Piper was the main devel-oper of Berwyn. One of our schools is named for him.
CHAPTER 5
City Heroes - “héroes de la ciudad”
Berwyn has 108 sworn police officers, and 200 more auxiliary police and civilian employ-ees. The fire department has over 80 fire-fighters in three firehouses. There is also a citizens’ fire academy. Our heros work so that we can live, work and play safely in Berwyn.
CHAPTER 6
Berwyn’s Green Spaces “espacios verdes de Berwyn”
In addition to its homes, Berwyn has many green spaces or parks. Berwyn has several parks; 7 in all. Proksa Park is the largest park in the district. Proksa Park has a duck pond, a creek, 3 tennis courts, 2 baseball diamonds, two picnic areas, and a half mile of paths for jogging and walking. Other features of Proksa Park are many varieties of trees, and also a community garden.
