CENTENNIEL

Every day we lift prayers and each Sunday we gather to-gether for corporate worship praying together for the prayers on our hearts, prayers of our church, and prayers for our community.

As our Charge Conference comes up this month, on September 26, our District Superintendent Rev. Dr. Rob Colwell has encouraged us to pray the boundaries asking these questions:

Who are we? (Identity) What makes our church spe-cial? What are we proud of? What ministry are you passionate about?

What is God calling us to do? (Purpose) Who are the neighbors God has put in front of you

now? Where is our community hurting? Is God at work in your community without you? What is a dream you think God has for your church? How does your view of the future differ from God’s

view?

As we think about these questions we will pray for those in our community and listen to how God is continually calling us to reach, serve, and love our neighbors.

What are our boundaries?

John Wesley said, “The World is my Parish. “ We know Christ calls us beyond the walls of our church. G.K. Chesterton wrote, “The church is the only institution that exists solely for the benefit of non-members.” When we look at our own community it is helpful to look at demographics within a 5-10 mile radius around our church and think about how are we serving and lov-ing our neighbors in our area.

When I look at the surrounding map and “pray the boundaries” around our church, I see God working through Bermuda Hundred reaching, praying, serving, and loving our neighbors in so many ways! This sum-mer I saw God work through Vacation Bible School this year as we reached 63 children. I see God work through us and others as we serve at Our Daily Bread food pan-try, as we participate in the Backpack Program at three local elementary schools, as we volunteer to tutor local children in the Greenleigh neighborhood. I see God at work through our church as we pray for our schools and gather with other Chester churches on Sunday, Septem-ber 15 at Thomas Dale High School to pray for our schools. I see Bermuda Hundred praying and caring when we give out Blessing Bags to those in our commu-nity who are hungry and in need. I see Bermuda Hun-dred reaching the hurting in our community when we visit those who are sick and shut in and when we offer prayer shawls to our neighbors who struggle. This win-ter we will offer a Christmas Comfort Service on Wednesday, December 11 to reach out to those who are needing to remember God’s comfort and healing.

God has placed us here in this community for a reason and with a purpose- to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world. I am excited about how God continually chal-lenges us to reach out in our community to pray, serve, and love. What does God dream for our church? In 2016 our church celebrates our 60th Anniversary! Who will we be? How will God con-tinue to transform lives through us? What does God have in mind for us for the next 60 years?

In the next few weeks, I invite you to listen and pray for the God’s call for you and our church. In our Church Council meetings and at Charge

Conference on September 26 at 7:30pm we will listen and vision about who we are, what we are called to do, and how God calls us to grow as dis-ciples of Jesus Christ!

I am so very thankful to serve God with you here at Bermuda Hundred! I am passionate and ex-cited to experience what God is doing in our lives and through our service and discipleship!

In God’s Love,

Pastor Beth

Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity

Stress. Anxiety. Fear. These words capture well the state of mind of many of us in America today. We have witnessed dramatic market losses, the collapse of the world’s largest insurance company, and many bank-ruptcies and mergers. Every day seems to bring another piece of economic uncertainty.

A recent survey found that over three in four Americans are stressed about the economy and their per-sonal finances. Half were worried about providing for their family’s basic needs. Over half of respondents re-ported feeling angry and irritable, and reported lying awake at night worried about this. The report concludes that, “The declining state of the nation’s economy is taking a physical and emotional toll on people nation-wide.”1

Join us in worship for a sermon series entitled Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity beginning Sunday, October 13. Our nation is experiencing what many have described as the “American Nightmare.” Increasing consumer debt, declines in savings, lower income growth, and a volatile stock market are all a part of our economic insecurity. We have lived in a society that tells us “you deserve it now,” whether or not we can afford it or really even need it.

All of us have struggled with these issues at one time or another. They are important issues that we cannot ignore. This is why, for four weeks next month we will be having a churchwide study and worship em-phasis called Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity. During this time we will explore what the Bible teaches us about financial management through corporate worship and small group study (Visit our website www.bermudahundredumc.com for details about small-group study opportunities.) We’ll hear expert advice and stories about what others have learned by working through financial challenges. Each week we will provide you with some practical tools you can use to assess your financial situation and develop a financial plan with a biblical foundation.

At the conclusion of the emphasis, we will have the opportunity to make personal commitments of our offerings to God through our church in the coming year. We will consecrate these commitments in the worship service on Sunday, November 3 (see the schedule that follows).

I hope you will join us in the coming weeks as we look at how we can manage our financial resources and truly experience simplicity, generosity, and joy.

Schedule of Events:

Sunday, October 13 When Dreams Become Nightmares

Sunday, October 20 Wisdom and Finance

Sunday, October 27 Cultivating Contentment

Sunday, November 3 Defined by Generosity--Consecration Sunday

Pot-Luck Luncheon after Worship

We hope you can join us for this life changing sermon series and small group study!

God Bless,

Michael Morris

As of August 1st, it will be my pleasure to serve as the Finance Chairman for Bermuda Hundred UMC. With Will Sloan entering seminary, his departure created a vacancy for this position. The church council approve my appointment to complete this calendar year of 2013 at the August meet-ing. It will not be a difficult job as the Finance Committee is a very strong and dedicated group of church members who understand the finances of the church and are always eager to participate when needed.

At the present time, we are working on the 2014 budget and I would be pleased to hear anything that any of you would like to share about the budget, particularly anything that you would like included. Our next meeting is scheduled for September 4th to start the process, so that the full budget can be presented to the church council on September 10th for approval and then on to the church charge conference on September 26th. After the approval on September 26th, we will print the entire budget in the October monthly newsletter so that it can be distributed to the full church.

Since we have so many wonderful things that we hope to get accomplished next year, it is extremely important to have the right budget to include all these projects. We would also ask that you start now thinking about your 2014 pledge to the church to accomplish all these wonderful things. You will be hearing more about the 2014 Stewardship campaign soon, so start planning now.

Thank you for all you do for our church and please send me an email or call if you want to discuss any part of the budget. I'm always available for conversation when it comes to money.

Blessings to you all, Betty J. Forbes, Finance Chairman

We will not meet on September 1 due to the Labor Day holiday. Beginning on September 8th, we will begin our next study, When Christians Get it Wrong, which is a six-week DVD exploration of topics that often "turn off" people to Christianity and the Church. The Leader's Guide states that "40% of young adults have turned away from Christianity and want nothing to do with Christians.... [Findings included] that these young adults perceived Christians to be hypocrite cal, unloving, too political, anti-intellectual, insensitive, judgmental, and "anti-homosexual." My conversations with young adults substantiate their findings. Generally I have found that young people have rejected Christianity not necessarily because of beliefs, although sometimes the case, but more often because of the attitudes and actions of Christians they have known or observed."

We look forward to this insightful and important study! We meet in the Fellowship Hall during Sun-day School, and everyone is welcome! Visit our blog for up-to-date information about our group and what we're talking about: http://bhumcjustcoffee.blogspot.com

It’s time for school! As children go back to school, our church starts collecting food items for our Backpack Program. The Backpack Program helps elementary grade school children have something to eat over the weekend. The guidance counselors at ENON, ELIZABETH SCOTT, and MARGUERITE CHRSTIAN ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS determine who are eligible for this program. The food needed: Poptarts, Breakfast bars, small boxes of cereal, instant oatmeal, fruit cups, Vienna sausages, Chef Boy Ardee cups, tuna, ham and chicken salad single servings, cheese crackers and boxed fruit drinks. The bin for donations is at the top of the steps just before you enter the Sanctuary area. Thanks to everyone who has made prior contribu-tions. This program would not be possible without your generosity! In Christ’s love, Ann McNinch, Missions Chair

Please note that the Tuesday afternoon tutoring with Abundant Life Ministries at the Langston Park Community Center in Hopewell has been cancelled until further notice due to vandalism of the Community Center this Spring. I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer. We are ready to go back doing some Mission work by having a cov-ered dish dinner on September 9th at 6:30 pm in the fellowship hall. Our speaker will be Kim Blair, Vice President of Development from Ferrum College. We will also have a silent auction with the proceeds going to Ferrum. Any-one that has a young person looking at colleges this would be a good start to find some information.

We will also recognize and present some awards to some people that have been doing some mission work. Everyone is invited to attend. We will have child care.

Our District Annual Meeting is September 29th at 3:00 pm at Monumental UMC in Emporia.

Here Piggy, Piggy…Here Piggy, Piggy! On Saturday, September 28th, the United Methodist Men will be holding their World Famous Pig Pickin’. Now, this year’s going to be a little different from past years, in that we will have only pulled BBQ available. There will be no Butts for sale. (Insert your jokes here). It’s still all you can eat, with Frank’s Famous Cole Slaw, and Charlie/Elaine/Stuart’s Famous Beans. Those beans have energy and will make you want to “putter” around the yard all afternoon. Set the date aside and come on out for some of the best BBQ that you’ve ever had and the best fellowship available in the area.

The UMM have decided that we will become more involved in our church in the area of sharing our faith as men of faith. If you would like to have the UMM speak to your group about faith from a man’s perspective, contact me and I’ll set it up. If there is a project you think would be good for the UMM to get involved in, let me know.

The UMM meet every 3rd Tuesday of the month, at River’s Bend Grill, at 6:30 pm. We have a meal together and a business meeting. The 1st time you come, the meal is on me, so come on out and join us for a meal and some good fellowship. All men are welcome to become UMM, just come to the meeting, or if you can’t make the meetings, help us with our projects.

The fences that enclose our HVAC units and trash bins have become weathered. The UMM have voted to buy paint to spruce up the joint a little. The Property Committee will be in charge of getting the paint and setting a date to apply it. If you like to paint, let Fred Proper or Richard Enz know and they will be more than happy to make your day.

If your project is in need of funds, please contact me and I will submit it to the UMM at our monthly meeting for consideration.

Happy September 2013 to everyone! I would like

to take this time to thank everyone for supporting

me over the past 5 years and our awesome youth! They have taught me as much as I've tried to teach

them! Thank you so very much also for the beau-

tiful picture, the kind words, the card, the cake, and all the hugs! It was all very much appreciated.

I'll still help as much as I can if needed with the

youth and I wish the next "leader" all the luck. These are truly a wonderful group of youth and I

feel so blessed to have been a part of the group. The annual fall retreat "Camp Willow Run" is

coming up 09/28-29/13 and I'm sure the deadline

for registration is soon. Please see Rev. Beth

tion. Also, the Fall Kick Off Block Party will be

on Sunday, 09/08/13 - mark your calendars! I won't say good bye but looking forward to say
