Saya ingin mengucapkan syabas kepada Bahagian Hartanah di atas pelancaran rasmi majlis pecah tanahnya yang menandakan bermulanya pembangunan Rumah Mampu Milik Johor di Taman Muti ara Rini, Skudai.

UAC Berhad’s 33rd edition of the Distributors Conference was held from 20 to 23 April 2012 in Yangon, the commercial

centre of Myanmar. It was a time for the major distributors of the Company to meet, discuss and share current business opportunities and challenges. It was also a time to renew friendships and get acquainted with the new distributors.

Mr. Koo Hock Fee, CEO/Managing Director of UAC Berhad opened the Conference with his traditional welcome address. This was followed by a review of business in 2011 by Mr. Gan BT, Chief Operating Officer. Time was allocated to share and discuss success stories, achievements as well as challenges faced in 2011.

All distributors were appreciated with awards for their respective levels of achievement in the preceding year. The conference this year included a talk by Mr. Bernard PeWin, Chief Executive of Wah Seong Boustead Myanmar on the socio-economic and political development in Myanmar. He gave a captivating overview of recent developments in Myanmar.

His short briefing drew many questions from the participants during the question and answer session that followed. It was not all work at the conference. A busy itinerary was arranged for the participants to visit places of religious and historical significance in and around Yangon. The rich Buddhist culture and traditions that pervade the fabric of the Myanmar society were evident as these co-existed in peace with Islam and Christianity. Meals were specially tailored to provide a wide spectrum of local Myanmar varieties for the participants to partake.

Mr. Koo delivering his welcome address

For most of the participants it was their first visit to Myanmar, a country they have heard of much in the recent years and for some, they may have studied the geographical and cultural aspects of what was known as Burma in their distant school days.

The retreat was made memorable, with our visit to the Universal Studio Singapore (USS) on the second day. Despite the rain, everyone was excited and eager for all the thrills and spills at USS. Even the faint hearted ones experienced the 3D thrill ride of the Transformers, the Battlestar Galactica, the world’s tallest duelling roller coasters that gave everyone an adrenaline rush and not forgetting the Jurassic Park ride. Everyone was also amazed by the stunts and feats at Water World, the adventurous and audacious journey at Revenge of the Mummy, the Madagascar ride and also the 4D Far Far Away Shrek movie together with many other attractions. Our USS adventure ended with the Hollywood Dreams Parade where the favourite blockbuster movies

and characters came to life on magnificent floats. Before we bade farewell to Singapore, we stopped

The journey by bus began with the 7.00 a.m. assembly at Menara Boustead and at around 1.30 p.m., we arrived at one

of Boustead’s finest estates, Telok Sengat Estate. After having a sumptuous seafood lunch, Tn. Hj. Shuaib, the manager of Telok Sengat Estate and his staff took us on a tour of the beautiful estate, to demonstrate the harvesting and collection process of Fresh Fruit Bunches (FFB). This was followed by a visit to the mill, to learn and gain an understanding of the processes in a mill with En. Zainal, the mill manager. After a tiring yet educational visit to the estate and mill, we departed to Johor Bahru late in the evening.

On our third day, we visited the commercially developed Iskandar

City, which represents the new state government hub for Johor. We also

drove past the upcoming attraction and theme park in Malaysia, Legoland which will be ready by September 2012. In addition, we had our Group Finance Bowling

Tournament in the afternoon, where six teams went head to head battling for the best team and best male bowler and best female bowler. After the exciting bowling battle, we searched our way to Kampong

Senibong for our dinner, where we had the best seafood dishes in town.

The last day of the retreat had come by and with a heavy heart, we packed our bags for our journey back to Kuala Lumpur. We stopped by at Johore Premium Outlet (JPO) located in Kulaijaya as our last itinerary and had our shopping spree varying from Coach bags to Nike shoes. Almost everyone purchased something for their beloved family members, friends and colleagues. Some even shopped until they dropped, with their hands full of large shopping bags. Finally, we arrived at Menara Boustead at around 8.00 p.m. and from the bottom of our hearts, we would like to thank the management and Mr. Daniel (who was in UK for official duty) for the retreat and not forgetting the Telok Sengat staff for their warm hospitality.

24-year old Ahmad Mashadani, a student at The University of Nottingham concluded his study aboard placement

at The University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC) in a memorable style, after embarking on a 20,000 k.m. road trip on the back of his trustee 110cc scooter. The journey saw the Business Management student travel through 21 countries, as he rode from UNMC back to the Nottingham campus in the UK. Describing his motivation as a long held ambition to travel the world, coupled with his desire to raise money for the Red Cross, Ahmad admitted that while the idea seemed daunting at first, he was excited by the unpredictability of the trip. He said, “I wanted to do the trip for the challenge it represents and the experiences I might have along the road. The chance to drive anywhere, with the relative freedom of having the world’s road network in front of me, and experiencing what other travellers might miss, makes the concept of travelling by scooter very tempting.” The trip was made possible by the Malaysian motorcycle manufacturer Demak, which provided Ahmad with a free scooter, while GIVI on the other hand provided him the attire and motorcycle accessories he needed. Since then, he has gone through the labourious task of sketching out a basic route and securing the necessary visas. Ahmad was excited about the potential assistance his adventure could provide to some of the world’s poorest people. He explained, “I choose to raise money for the Red Cross after having the privilege of meeting many people that have volunteered with the charity. The Red Cross has always been the first on site following natural disasters, wars and other miserable conditions that many suffer. They try to help people regardless of the severity of the situation and now I would like to raise awareness of their noble actions, unselfishness and volunteerism, in which they often risk their lives to help others.”

UNMC opens newCentre of Excellence for

Post-harvest BiotechnologyThe University of Nottingham Malaysia Campus (UNMC)

has opened a new Centre of Excellence for Post-harvest Biotechnology (CEPB) in its School of Biosciences. Led by Dr. Asgar Ali, an expert in post-harvest biology and technology, the centre is developing new technologies aimed at reducing food losses as well as improving overall quality and safety. The aim is to increase profits for growers and marketers and make nutritious food available to consumers. Dr. Ali said, “In developing countries losses of between 10 to 100 per cent have been recorded. Tropical countries like Malaysia have a particular problem because of the number of micro-organisms that exist due to humidity. Cutting post-harvest losses could add a sizeable quantity to the global food supply.”With funding from the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council (BBSRC) UK, the Ministry of Agriculture, Malaysia (MOA), the Ministry of Science, Technology and

Innovation, Malaysia (MOSTI) and private sector organisations in Malaysia, the CEPB is working with other universities across the world to find solutions to the problem of post-harvest waste. It is also running an accompanying MSc and PhD programme.

The team have already proved the concept of their technology to extend the shelf life of fruits and are now negotiating with industry to trial their product. Dr. Asgar can be contacted at [email protected].

Together with message of support from his fellow students and previous experiences gained during a similar 4,000 k.m. trip to South East Asia, Ahmad said, “Being able to get out of the daily routine, the chance to experience things that very few might have experienced before, challenging my boundaries and understanding of others are what I am really looking forward to. Although it might sound strange, the need to complete this journey on a ‘student’ budget of just £1,000.00 (RM5,000.00) is also something I am looking forward to. The element of unpredictability of how I am going to manage and if I am going to manage, makes the whole trip a bit more exciting.” For more information on Ahmad’s journey, please visit his blog (www.goingnotts.com), donations site (www.justgiving. com/goingnotts) or facebook page (www.facebook.com/GoingNotts).

The iconic blue cat made its way to e@Curve to celebrate its 100 years before birth. To launch the event, children from the

House of Joy orphanage were entertained at the press conference held to promote the exciting event. Each child was presented with a goodie bag filled with Doraemon merchandises.

From 25 May to 10 June 2012 shoppers were spoiled for choice over the many exclusive Doraemon merchandises at the bazaar held at

the Centre Atrium. Doraemon and Nobita’s appearance every weekend was the highlight for many fans of the famous comic. With their 30 minutes appearance, the characters delighted fans with their dance and photo session.

e@Curve held its annual Floor Combat 2012, Malaysia's Biggest 3-on-3 B-Boy Competition. Held for the sixth year in a row since 2007, this year’s competition attracted BBoys and BGirls from Indonesia, Thailand, Brunei and Morocco. Prizes totalling more than USD5,000.00 and the coveted titles of Best BBoy crew, BBoy of the Year and BGirl of the Year in the region were up for contention.

At each of these seminars, the Bomba officers stressed that fire safety is not only the responsibility of the building owner but also equally the responsibility of the building tenants. They also emphasised that tenants must ensure that all passageways leading to exits must not be obstructed by furniture or office equipment and not to store any highly combustible materials such as shredded papers. Furthermore, tenants are reminded to brief new staff on the Emergency Response Manual, update the listing of Fire Marshals and physically challenged individuals in the office and inform the building management accordingly.

The Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia who were also invited to speak at the seminars gave insights into the importance of first aid. They also demonstrated the correct way to provide first aid to victims of heart attack, electrocution, choking, burns, accidents and others.

As safety is paramount, the Boustead Property Division has been organising such seminar and training on fire safety and first aid as well as conducting fire evacuation exercise once a year. We would like to thank the Jabatan Bomba dan Penyelamat, the Persatuan Bulan Sabit Merah Malaysia and the participants for making all three seminars a success.

On 31 July 2012, while performing his regular patrols around the

car park basement, on duty security guard En. Abdul Karim Ahmad noticed a small black bag on the floor at exit lane No. 14. Upon closer inspection, he discovered to his amazement that the bag contained RM6,000.00 in cash. Commendably, he immediately radioed the Duty Officer for further action.

The bag was accidentally dropped by the owner, En. Wan Faizal, Marketing Manager of Eve Cargo Express as he was entering his vehicle to leave the

Curve building. He had withdrawn the money from CIMB bank and had already left the mall by the time of the discovery. Indeed En. Faizal only realised the bag was missing when he reached the toll plaza at Penchala Link. Horrified, he rushed back to the Curve and sought the administration’s assistance.

En. Faizal was very much relieved when he recovered the bag together with his cash intact and upon hearing about the honesty of En. Karim, thanked the man for looking after the money. He went

on to praise the Curve management for having such an honest and dedicated staff.

Boustead Property Division recently organised three separate Fire Safety and First Aid seminars. The first seminar was

held on 13 June 2012 at The Royale Bintang the Curve and was attended by about 40 participants from the McDonald’s Restaurant and Kidzania of Curve NX. The second seminar was held at Menara Boustead on 21 June 2012 and was attended by about 100 participants from both the Menara Boustead and Wisma Boustead buildings whilst the third seminar was held on 6 July 2012 at The Royale Bintang Damansara and was attended by 45 participants from the Surian Tower. Participants comprised members from the building Emergency Response Team, tenants Floor Fire Marshals as well as Security and Maintenance personnel.
