Editorial PP Quah Sek Cheng President’s Message Leong Choy Ying

While I was away….

“Everyone needs help from everyone.” Bertolt Brecht

During the 2 weeks that I was away, I was extremely grateful that my friends in RC Pudu has collectively taken up my various tasks and have ensured the smooth running of our club activities.

Firstly, VP Heng has stood in for me in chairing two weekly meetings and the October board meeting.

Thank you VP Heng for your willingness to help and I have heard good feedbacks that you have done a good

job!

Honorary Secretary Lawrance, you are a great and ever dependable friend. You have ensured that all the various details of the meetings are being attended to, covering not just your secretarial work but also the club admin and is a great support to the President/Acting President. Thank You!

My Board members, thank you for chipping in to ensure that all the various avenues are being looked after, with the committee meetings going on as usual and the Board reports being prepared and presented on time.

My Board advisors, thank you for guiding us along, and a special thanks to PDG Paul Lee who bought dinner after the last board meeting. I was told that I missed a great fellowship!

My ever efficient bulletin editors PP Quah & PP Richard, thank you for being patient with me as I tried to draft the two President’s messages while juggling with the various activities I was involved in at other parts of the world, at different time zones.

A special acknowledgement to all my various Organising Chairmen, namely PP KH Low, PP VG, PP Sam and PP KU for your continuous work in managing the various club projects, namely the District Conference, the Matching Grant projects and the proposed “crime prevention” project. I have been constantly updated my your various e-mails over the past 2 weeks.

Before going on the 2 weeks break, I was quite concern that while I was away, I may have left things undone that may result in the club activities being hindered. Well, I am glad that everything went on fine .…

“I get by with a little help from my friends.” John Lennon

In Rotary Service,

President RY 2010/2011

During the past two weeks when the Editor was stricken by a bout of shingles, a most unpleasant experience, it was very reassuring that PP Richard Liew again came to his rescue to ensure that last weeks Berita Pudu gets published together with my usual assistant Ms Baby Cheah.

The Editor’s enforced rest gave him time to think of all the help he has got from various Rotarians right down to the concern and help of our publisher Corinne. Action always speak louder than words and many Rotarians quietly has been sending me news and clippings that may be of use for our Bulletin as the production of Berita Pudu would be meaningless if news are not forthcoming to make the news. Please keep the news and jokes coming for sure they are appreciated.

Some diligent Rotarians heading a particular project even made sure that the Editor is alerted by sending carefully crafted news releases to ease the Editors work. Again one salute these quiet persons who really care and love the Rotary duties entrusted upon them. They surely did not shy away from involvement. Here one may add that news sent to the Editor need not be in perfect or good English, the news content is the primary purpose, and the Editor’s job is to edit for publishing. Practice makes perfect and regular habits once formed will become second nature.

Then there are regular helpers who forward the Editor pictures and slides for selection and editing. They are such dedicated souls and their diligence is a boon to anyone as its done every week and without fail. Again these are silent uncomplaining Rotarians who serve willing as they have pledged to do so when they joined Rotary.

Not forgotten are the occasional critics who laments the wrong spelling, lousy English and so forth. They are constructive as they keep the Editor on his toes, even though quite often it is really beyond the control of those responsible. What to say lah! Editor must cop it all as it comes with the turf.

Lastly, talking about the working quiet Rotarians, there are many now serving in the Organizing Committee for the forthcoming 76th District Conference. Things are hotting up, with endless meetings and deadlines to beat and one can be sure that the Organizing Chairman would welcome prompt response as he runs around to ensure that come that day everything will be in place for another Conference with a “Difference - Again”. Seeing them meet so frequently one cannot help but to appreciate the sweat and effort to ensure everything is in near perfect order and that the budget will not be busted. End of the day its teamwork and we do have a committed team.

Pudu News

STANLEY PEREIRA, our Sargeant At Arms promptly called the meeting to order on behalf of the President CHOY YING who has just returned from an overseas break with her family.

Guests and visiting Rotarians were recognised before he proceeded to lead in singing the National Anthem and proposing a toast to our King.

JEFFREY YAP then conducted the fining session, losing no time to announce that what he says is final and binding. Pres. Choy Ying was fined RM10 for being away and those not wearing jacket or did not bring guests were not spared. He was able to net a tidy sum for the Club.

President then took over the proceeding to make her announcements (see separate heading for details). The sad news was the demise of PP VG Chandran’s father-in-law over the weekend.

Shocking was the news that our former Rotarian James Prophett has passed away in England as informed by his widow.

PDG Dato JIMMY LIM then came forward to talk about the the Polio-Plus Initiative Team’s effort to raise funds

for RI’s concerted effort to eradicate polio. Its an appropriate time as this is the beginning of the month of ROTARY FOUNDATION MONTH. He then had his team to explain the forthcoming Polio-Plus Initiative project to scale MOUNT KINABALU, 11,000 feet above sea level. There will be 60 places in all to be lead by our DG KOK BENG. We were encouraged to be part of history as put by PP Bindi. It will be an interesting outing which will include a Joint Sister Club meet with the Rotarians in Kota Kinabalu. Pudu Rotarians are encouraged to make their pledge to Polio-Plus.

Pres, Choy Ying informed PDG Dato Jimmy Lim that Pudu will submit their pledged donation by the 29th November 2010.

PP ALBERT LIM introduced our speaker PP VINCENT LIM of Rotary Club Ampang.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, he attended school at the Victoria Institution, He holds three first degrees from the University of London with three very different degrees, namely:

1. Mechanical Engineering2. Law3. Philosophy

He also holds a MA in applied linguistics from the University of New England.

He is a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Malaysia, Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Arbitrators UK, and a registered Professional Engineer with the Board of Engineers Malaysia.

Currently he practice as an advocate and solicitor, and is a Barrister at Law from Gray’s Inn.

He was a former Member of Parliament for Petaling jays Utara, a Past President of the Ampang Rotary Club and has served with the district as District Secretary (special functions) and Assistant Governor.

PP Vincent Lim, no stranger to our Club, gave us a quick run through his current pet study on “philosophy”. This is his latest love, the last being subject of English.

Vincent echoed that “for thousands of years, people have asked fundamental questions about the world, their place in it, and their relations to each other. These questions, and attempts to answer them, define the subject matter of philosophy.” The Greek word for philosophy translates to “Love of Wisdom”.

Philosophy to him is more than skin deep. To him its celebrating the beauty of the human spirit and

THE RoTARy FouNDATIoN…… The Formative years

• 1917 - Arch C. Klumph, Rotary’s sixth president, proposed to the Rotary International Convention in Atlanta, Georgia, USA, the creation of an “endowment fund for Rotary.... for the purpose of doing good in the world in

charitable, educational, and other avenues of community service.

• 1918 - InJuly, theendowment received its firstcontribution of $26.50 from the Rotary Club of Kansas City, Missouri, USA, which represented the net proceeds from the 1918 International Convention (In 1910, Rotary Club of Kansas City was launched the thirteenth Rotary Club in history. “Club 13” is one of the oldest, and most prestigious, service clubs in the world)

• MONDAY MORNING, JUNE 18, 1917….ATTHE FIRST PLENARY SESSION OF THE INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION IN ATLANTA,

President Arch Klumph : “We have called the attention of the organization

this year to the possibility of a future endowment fund for Rotary. Carrying on, as we are, a miscellaneous community service, it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world, in charitable, educational or other avenues of community progress; or such funds could be well used for extension work. I know of no more commendable use for the vast millions possessed by men in this country than that certain sums might be endowed to Rotary for the purpose of establishing Rotary clubs in all nations of the world”.

• By virtue of a near unanimous ballot of thedelegates, Klumph’s idea of an endowment fund for Rotary became a technical reality. Technical, because it wasn’t until after the Rotary Convention

in Kansas City, Missouri, the following year that the first funds were received for the Fund.

• 30th June 1918 - THE ROTARY ENDOWMENTFUND stood at 56.50 in the bank with interest gained of $1.29 giving a total as at of a massive $57.79.

• 1927-ThefirstattempttoconverttheEndowmentFund to The Rotary Foundation, led by RI President Harry H. Rogers at the 18th Convention ‘Ostend convention’ was defeated. (Ostende, Belgium - the first Rotary Club on the European Continent)

• 1928 - The endowment fund had grown to$US5,739.07, and it was renamed

The Rotary Foundation. It became a distinct entity within Rotary International. Five Trustees, including Klumph, were appointed to “hold, invest, manage, and administer all of its property.... as a single trust, for the furtherance of the purposes of RI.”

• TheTrusteesappointedbyRIPArthurSappwereRufus Chapin of Chicago, Illinois; Charles Rhodes of Auckland, New Zealand; Harry H. Rogers of San Antonio, Texas; L.G. Sloan of London, England, and the “Father of the Foundation,” Arch C. Klumph. Chapin served as the Treasurer of Rotary from 1912 to 1945, Harry H. Rogers was President of RI in 1926-27, and Arch C. Klumph, who started the whole thing in 1917 during his term as RI President, would serve as Chair of the Trustees for the next five years. Klumph would expand on the purpose and reason for The Rotary Foundation in an article in The Rotarian the following April 1929.

• WHAT PAul HARRIS SAID... Paul Harris, This Rotarian Age, p 61) “One’s religion is one’s own possession and he

has a right to it. One’s nativity is not of his own choosing, but whatever it maybe, it is entitled to respect; and all nations have [an] honorable place in the world’s family.”

THEREFORE OUR THOUGHTS …..

• We can best respect each other and eachnation through getting involved in our Foundation’s projects and programs

• Wecanalsorespecteachindividual’srighttoa life free from pain, hunger and illiteracy by contributing to our Foundation on a regular basis.

MoHSEN SolHDooST SElECTED FoR RoTARy PEACE FElloWSHIP

PDG PAUL LEE has informed that the application of Mohsen Solhdoost for the Rotary Peace Fellowship has been successful. Mohsen’s application is sponsored by our District through RC PUDU.

Mohseen will be assigned to the Rotary Peace Centre at the University of Queensland and the host will be the Rotary District 9600.

It is noted that the Rotary Foundation and their University Partners considers candidates from all over the world for the Rotary Peace Fellowship in a highly competitive selection process. Thus it is a significant achievement to be selected and can lead to long term relationship with the Rotary Foundation.

Message from the Trustee Chair - Celebrate Rotary Foundation Month

November is Rotary Foundation Month. It all began in 1917 when then RI President Arch Klumph announced the acceptance of endowments for doing good in the world – The Rotary Foundation was born! Contributions took off in 1947 in memory of our founder Paul Harris. Although The Rotary Foundation originally sponsored only educational programs, it added humanitarian programs in the late 1960s and has continued to evolve with the addition of our famous PolioPlus program to our Permanent Fund, the Rotary Centers for International Studies and, finally, the Future Vision Plan.

Our 3-year Future Vision pilot took effect on 1 July. The pilot is intended to teach us what is good – or bad – in our plan, so that we can correct it, as the Future Vision Plan is here to stay.

However, The Rotary Foundation’s Future Vision Plan is much more than just a plan for the Foundation. Rotary International’s Strategic Plan is a parallel plan which, to a large extent, joins and supplements our plan. We are too small an organization for two plans of this magnitude – they shall have to merge. Not necessarily tomorrow, but some time after 2017 when The Rotary Foundation celebrates its 100th anniversary. If I were to target a year for this merger, I would pick 2025 – the year when our Permanent

Fund is expected to reach USD1,000,000,000 (one billion!).

How can we reach this goal? By Building Communities – Bridging Continents through Service Above Self.

Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar Foundation Trustee Chair

EREy? WHAT’S THAT? - (contributed by PDG Dr. Paul Lee)

Contributions to the Annual Programs Fund (APF) keep Rotary Foundation programs humming in high gear to help people with desperate needs.

Your APF support through the “Every Rotarian, Every Year” (EREY) initiative is vital to Doing Good in the World.

At the end of the Rotary year, 50 percent of each district’s donations to the Annual Programs Fund is credited to their District Designated Fund (DDF), while the other 50 percent goes to the World Fund. The Foundation uses the World Fund to support the worldwide programs it offers. Likewise, districts use their DDF to fund the Foundation programs they elect to participate in.

Recently, the Foundation was able to restore the World Fund budget for Matching Grants, largely because Rotarians donated a record amount of almost US$115 million to the Annual Programs Fund in 2007-08. The amount of the World Fund available for Matching Grants in 2010-11 increased 82 percent compared to 2009-10. This is because funds for the 100 Future Vision pilot districts were budgeted separately for 2010-11, making it one of the largest World Fund budgets in Matching Grants history.

When every Rotarian contributes to the Foundation every year, we expand our capacity to bring help and hope to a hurting world.

For example:

Mulambuzi Joshuah received a most special gift on his fifth birthday: heart surgery that will allow him to attend school again in his village outside Kampala, Uganda. Mulambuzi was among 20 Ugandan children who received free heart surgeries through Gift of Life India, funded by a US$105,000 Rotary Foundation Matching Grant. The project was sponsored by the Rotary Club of Delhi Midwest and District 3010 (India), and all 17 districts in Korea.

“Many of them were overdue,” says Dr. A.C. Peter, a member of the Rotary Club of Delhi East End and

not spirituality in the new age sense. It is a rational, systematic study of general and fundamental problems, such as existence, knowledge, values, reason, mind and language.

His brief talk on philosophy covers the History, Branches (of philosophy), and even riddles and puzzles. Names like Socrates, Plato and Aristotle were amongst the historical figures mentioned. And as for the MAIN BRANCHES of philosophy he mentioned topics like Theory of Knowledge --- Epistemology, Logic, Metaphysics, Ethics, Philosophy of Language, Philosophy of Science, Continental Philosophy and Philosophy of Religion.

As Vincent dwelled deeper and more confusing, he asked questions like “What is there”, “What is it like” and “Is Time Real”.

Logic can be questioned like when he asked if its true that “the sun rises from the east every morning”.

Just to make sure (perhaps) that we become totally lost, Vincent talked about Pseudo science, Darwin and Creationism.

To add even more confusion he talked about Ethics (the different schools of Thirruvallar, Kant, Mill), Morals and Existentialism.

This last subject of Existentialism is perhaps interesting in that it is a philosophical movement which emphasizes on individual existence, freedom and choice. The main identifiable common proposition is that existence precedes essence. By this, existentialism states that man exists and in that existence man denies himself and the world in his own subjectivity, and wanders between choice, freedom and existential angst.

That was a lot of philosophy for a Monday afternoon and in concluding Vincent encourage the taking of a BA

Philosophy at the London University for an excellent opportunity “to see for yourself what the study of philosophy involves.”

Thanking was done by Rtn. KA Kumar who admitted that he is very blur after this talk but thanked PP Vincent for taking time to share with us his take on the subject of Philosophy.

Welcome to Pudu Rotary Club’s RY2010/2011’s 17th Weekly Meeting.

In the past week our club had carried out the following activities:-

a. Last Wednesday Oct 27th, the District Conference committee held their weekly meeting at PP KH Low’s office at 7 pm. We are happy to report that
