This programme, which responds to the increasing demand for both structural and fire safety engineering professionals, arises from the Fire Service (Amendment) Ordinance the Fire Service (Amendment) Ordinance 20172017 and the aging building stocksaging building stocks in Hong Kong. It is the first of its kindfirst of its kind offered by local universities. With the increased concerns on safety in new and existing buildings with respect to structural resistance and fire protection, there are similar demands in many well-developed cities in the world. The programme aims to educate students as competent engineerseducate students as competent engineers who are able to designdesign, maintainmaintain and retrofitretrofit both new and existing buildings with technical knowledge of structural engineering as well as both active and passive fire protection technologies.
• Four-year full-time comprehensive programme.comprehensive programme.• A unique undergraduate programmeunique undergraduate programme which combines the
essential elements of safety, sustainability and fire protection of structures.
• Opportunity to join exchange programmesexchange programmes for 1-2 semesters at internationally famed universities.
• Practical training Practical training modules in the technologically advanced Industrial Centre of the University.
• Summer placement Summer placement in Hong Kong, Mainland China or overseas.
• Scholarships Scholarships available for applications.
Full accreditation by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) will be sought. Full accreditation by The Hong Kong Institution of Engineers (HKIE) will be sought. Graduates of this programme will then be qualified for Scheme A trainingScheme A training of Civil, Structural and Fire Disciplines of HKIE. In addition to corporate membership of HKIE (Civil, Structural and Fire Disciplines), they may subsequently apply for registration as a professional engineer under the Engineers Registration Board.
Our graduates are well-prepared for employment as graduate engineers graduate engineers and receiving rewarding salaries in both public and private sectorsboth public and private sectors.
Structural Engineering is about the planning, design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitationplanning, design, construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of a great variety of structures including buildings, bridges, tunnels, underground structures, stadiums, space frames, and so on. It aims to ensure safety, function, durability and cost-effectiveness of these structures. Structural engineers represent a creative professioncreative profession that makes significant makes significant real-world contributionsreal-world contributions to our society.
Fire Engineering or Fire Safety Engineering designs the fire protection systemfire protection system of buildings and structures by adopting the scientific and engineering principlesscientific and engineering principles of fire dynamics and human behaviour, rules, and expert judgement. This programme covers fire science, fire risk management, fire detection and suppression, psychology, physiology, law and regulations for fire protection, and structural design for fire safety.
