National Open PublicitySets New Standard

Mark Cox, assisted by Jim Butz, HaroldDorrance, Tom King, Audrey Thornburgand Lois Hayhurst, handled publicity forthe 49th National Open in a way that setan improved and helpful standard for allgolf tournament publicity. Medinah offi-cials worked cordially and intelligentlywith the publicity men in caring for writersand photographers as gracious and helpfulhosts. Transportation from Chicago'sLoop far out to Medinah and back was abig problem but was handled by bus servicefar better than many expected. Medinahofficials blasted Jimmy Powers' observa-tion that the USGA often awarded theOpen to the clubs having the hottest pressstys and the coldest . . . .s as officials.

Press room was set up in the ballroom.Due to Medinah's No.3 ninth green beingfar from clubhouse detail of out nineswasn't available until players finished andwere in the lockerrooms for interviews.Board figures might have been somewhatbolder for the older writers but were plainenough.

Score transcription for writers was madeeasy by the Cox staff which speedily sup-plied hole-by-hole scores of the leaders af-ter the completion of each round and scoresby out and in rounds of the entire field. This made filing and reference easy for thereporters.

For the first time at a golf tournamentwriters were given box score data on con-testants. This information consisted ofscores by rounds, pars, birdies, bogies,

putts, missed greens, and shots made intotraps and into rough. This data made itpossible to give readers the same sort ofinformative detail baseball, racing andfootball fans get in box scores. For in-stance, the box score on Middlecoff's sec-ond round 67 was 10 pars, 6 birdies, 2 bo-gies, 30 putts, 2 missed greens, 3 traps and2 rough.

The box score data was secured fromplayers after they had completed theirrounds. This was tedious for the playersand the publicity staff, but the players co-operated in fine shape, as they did withphotographers at the many practice areasavailable near the Medinah clubhouse.

What should be done in making this boxscore information standard at every majortournament is for the scorers to have anadditional small form for keeping the data, hole by hole. It is something the Cham-pionship committee of the USGA will con-sider. M. G. (Scotty) Fessenden, pres.Western GA, says the Western is going toadopt the idea and the PGA Tournamentbureau is thinking about making the boxscore standard practice as the one majorimprovement in golf score reporting thathas been introduced since the game gotinto print.

Preliminary publicity and backgroundinformation on the Open was handled bet-ter than similar material on any other golfevent ever was prepared and supplied.

Publicity on the Medinah affair defini elywas responsible for a gate that probablycame close to Canterbury's record gate forthe 1946 National Open, despite Medinah'srather remote location west of Chicago.
