Ms. Hykes took oath of office on January 6, 2015.

Snow, snow and more snow! A big shout out to all of our dedicated staff who kept roads clear and safe.

For those of us on social media, you probably noticed the dress debate that engaged thousands of people. Is the dress black and blue? Gold and white? Something else? While the merits of this debate are questionable, an interesting article was written on GovLoop’s blog about the social media sensation. Dave Barton, a featured blogger, related this phenomena to public perception. He writes, “ Perception is also incredibly important in the government community–not only to our employees, but especially to how the public views us.” So here are two things to consider:

-How are we perceived?-What are we doing to sustain or change this perception?

The Dress Debate

Burlington is in the HOMETOWN SHOWDOWN!Every year, the NC League of Municipalities hosts a bracket style competition, the Hometown Showdown. 90 hometowns submited a photo of their community. Our photo, by Lee Capps, depicts one of our favorite Burlington symbols, the Dentzel Carousel.

Burlington was selected to compete in the top 32. The public then votes on their favorite hometown by “liking” the respective picture.

Burlington is in a great position. We’ve made it into round 2, beating Albemarle by a significant margin.

However, as the rounds continue, the competition becomes

more fierce. Each round, the votes are reset, and the public must “like” the photo again. Our next competitor is Greensboro, and it’s going to be very close! They had more than 1,000 votes in round 1!

We need your help! Visit our Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/BurlingtonNC) to vote for Burlington, or visit our website. Please help us spread the word about the contest! Let’s show everyone what a great place Burlington is to live and work!

On February 15th, the City of Burlington launched a new service for accepting job applications. The software, called NeoGov, allows applicants to apply online, monitor their application status, and sign up for job vacancy announcements.

Visit to view all City job vacancies. Sign up for vacancy announcements at www.BurlingtonNC.gov/JobInterest.

The City no longer accepts paper applications but the HR department has been equipped with two computer kiosks reserved for completing online job applications.

Migrating to the NeoGov system has taken much hard work and coordination by HR staff and hiring managers throughout the city. Thanks to their patience and perseverance, the City is now accepting applications from a larger pool of qualified applicants and job seekers are having a more positive experience as they apply to join the City of Burlington team.

spotlight on Team BuildingRecreation staff had a blast at their staff meeting playing human hungry hippo. The exercise helped them all work together to collect lettered tennis balls and solve the puzzle. The group figured out the teamwork word, collaboration, in record time. Then the group had some fun taking photos with props. How do you and your department focus on team building and boosting morale? Send in your ideas, suggestions and tips!

Acts of Kindness

Throughout The City

I brought hot cocoa mix in to communications one of the really cold mornings, and we invited the patrol units to come get some.

A massage was purchased for a fellow co-worker.

Flowers were given to a few special ladies.

One person sent a box of fresh bakery donuts to the wastewater plant, another bought a fresh bakery dozen for a safety meeting, another brought biscuits in for the whole Belmont St. gang, another sent bags of Valentine’s Day candy to a couple different folks in other departments.

The Recreation Department was serenaded by tenors and sent roses!

The Wellness Council’s Random Acts of Kindness Week was so successful that it was extended for another week! It doesn’t have to be a designated week to do something nice for a co-worker. We all saw what a difference these little acts made! These are just a few random acts of kindness that were brought to our attention.

During RAK week a card was given to an admin staff who is often times swamped with phone calls, waiting costumers, emails, etc. A card along with gift of hot tea was given during RAK week and it truly made her day. It reminded her she is appreciated and important.

In 2001, the City began providing an annual subsidy for City employees who hold an active, paid membership at a fitness center. Employees are eligible to receive $50 annually if they submit proof of an active gym membership each year. Sworn Law Enforcement Officers and Certified Fire Personnel are eligible for a $100 annual subsidy.

You may join any gym you choose. To receive the fitness subsidy, eligible employees must complete an eligible claim form available here or at Human Resources. Include your proof of active membership with your claim form. These claims can be submitted any time during the year!

Get Your Annual PhysicalDon’t forget your physical! In order to avoid paying a portion of your health insurance premium during the next fiscal year, proof of an annual physical is required. Full-time employees on the City’s insurance should have a physical during each fiscal year, running from July 1st to June 30th. Employees should plan to see Dr. Strickland for a physical or submit a proof of physical examination form from their primary care physician to the Occupational Health Office before the June 30, 2015 deadline.

If employees elect not to have a physical, they will be responsible for paying a portion of their health insurance premium.

If you haven’t yet had your 2014-2015 year physical, Ally Feder, Registered Medical Assistant, should be reaching out to you with a phone call. You may also call the Occupational Health office to schedule an appointment at 229-3584.
