WHAT AN EDUCATION WEEK I am so proud to be Principal of such a remarkable school and last Thursday was one of the most rewarding days of my teaching career. Along with a professionally dynamic staff we have proceeded on a transformational pedagogical journey to further engage our students. The integrated teaching/learning class programs have enabled stu-dents to deepen their understanding and knowledge of required con-tent areas of our syllabus but more importantly in the higher order thinking areas. NEWS FROM THE LIBRARY The Book Week character parade will be held next Monday 20 August from 9:00am. Students will be able to dress up as their favourite book character or book title. All parents are welcome to attend and watch their children parade in their costumes. Following this, students can change into preferable play clothes. Ms Wedlock has also organised author, Oliver Phommavanh, to speak to the students on Wednesday. THE TELL THEM FROM ME STUDENT FEEDBACK SURVEY I am delighted that this term, our school, like many other public schools in the state, will participate in a Department of Education initiative: the Tell Them From Me student feedback survey. The survey aims to help improve student learning outcomes and measures factors that are known to affect academic achieve-ment and other student outcomes. The focus of the NSW-wide survey is on student wellbeing, engage-ment and effective teaching practices. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/FAQs/TTFM_Student_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T12018.pdf The survey is an opportunity for our students to provide us with valuable and quick feedback on what they think about school life, how engaged they are with school and the different ways that teachers interact with them. Schools in Australia and around the world have used the Tell Them From Me survey to help improve how they do things at school. I want to assure you that the survey is confidential. The survey is conducted online and will typically take less than 30 minutes to complete. It will be conducted during school hours between 27 August and 26 October. Participating in the survey is entirely voluntary. A consent form and FAQs for parents/carers about the survey will be sent home. If you do not want your child or children to par-ticipate, please return the form to school by Friday 24 August 2018 THE PARTNERS IN LEARNING PARENT FEEDBACK SURVEY In addition, our school will be participating in The Partners in Learning parent survey, another part of the Tell Them From Me suite of surveys (student, teacher and parent surveys) on student engagement. The survey asks parents and carers questions about different factors that are known to impact on student wellbeing and engagement. Running this survey will help our school understand parents’ and carers’ perspectives on their child’s experience at school. These include: communication between parents/carers and staff, activities and practices at home and parent/carer views on the school's support of learning and behaviour. This valuable feedback will help our school make practical improvements. The sur-vey is conducted entirely online at home or on public computers. The survey will typically take 15 minutes or less to complete and is completely confidential. The parent survey will be conducted between 27 August and 26 October. Participating in the sur-vey is entirely voluntary, however, your responses are very much appreciated. More information about the survey is available at: http://surveys.cese.nsw.gov.au/images/FAQs/TTFM_Parent_Survey_FAQs_Parent_and_Carers_T32018.pdf Belinda Zorian Principal

What a great way to start National Science Week with The Museum of Unnatural History which was STEMtastic!! Belrose School is certainly creating “Game Changers and Change Makers”. The museum was the culmination of an engaging project based around the book Mechanica by Lance Balchin. It provided the students with a wonderful opportunity to showcase their Mechanica and elements of learning to the many visitors who attended the event. Mayor Michael Regan expressed his enthusiasm for the museum, he was quoted as saying “he wished he could have come earlier and stayed longer.” He asked many questions which the students could confidently answer. It was then time for him to answer a question, Lachlan A had the foresight to ask “If you were going to build a Mechanica, what would you build and why?” He responded with “Something that flies because I like Ironman!” University of Sydney academics, Dr Christine Preston, Professor Janette Bobis and Ms Katherin Cartwright, were equally impressed with the Mechainca displayed in the museum. Ms Cartwright shared her thoughts with all the schools in the STEM Teacher Enrichment Academy with a vote of thanks “Thanks to Belrose PS for the invite to come and see all the wonderful things your students have been up to in STEM.” The Director Education Leadership Mrs Sally Egan and the school community were also in attendance and commended the school on its work. A parent commented “Congratulations on the amazing Mechanica work and event you, your colleagues and the students produced it was very impressive and my child has loved those lessons immensely.” During the project the students had to demonstrate learning in many areas of the curriculum. They had to produce their own story, similar in style to the Mechanica book, as the backstory for their own Mechanica. They employed the Stanford Design Thinking Process of Empathising, Ideating, Designing, Prototyping and Testing to assist with the creation of their Mechanica. The Stanford Design Thinking Process

The students used Photoshop to produce a version of their own Mechanica The excitement in the museum prior to, during and after the event was a testament to the success of the project. The students are to be commended upon their commitment to this project. I would like to take this opportunity to extend grateful thanks to the families who supported the students with this project, I know design ideas were shared in many Belrose homes.
