MAG 1 The students in MAG 1 have been working very hard during the start of this term. Throughout the core subjects, the students have been practising their new skills with a variety of resources. Many of the students are starting to further develop or achieve their IEP goals. This is pleasing to see and we are furthering their skills once they do this. We have been doing some messy and fun science experiments and Mrs Carlyon has been coming in to play with robots with us every week too. In Home Economics the students have made toasted sandwiches, muffin pizzas, veggie patties, sweet muffins, omelettes, baked potatoes, cottage pies, burgers, pikelets and apple crumble. In Music they have continued to play multiple instruments, sing into microphones, choose whether a pitch sound is high or low and choose feelings when listening to different sounds. This term, the students have still participated in High Flyers in Wangara every Friday during periods three and four. Massimo is learning to jump onto his tummy from jumping on his feet. Cameron is practising tuck jumps, jumping on the parachute and bouncing onto his bottom. Caitlin has grown a lot of confidence in her jumping and is now practising jumping without physical help. She does many core exercises and strives to increase her skills each week. The students have loved swimming throughout

the whole year and their confidence in the pool

is growing every week. Cameron is swimming

under the pool lane ropes, under the water to

find the pool toys and kick his legs with a lot of

strength. Caitlin has a new set of exercises and

skills in the pool that her physiotherapist made

for her. Massimo is practising good technique

of swimming and arm strength exercises.

MAG 2 It has been a busy start to Term 4. The students have been preparing their craft items for Market Day such as using recycled bottle tops to make glittery decorations to go on a big Christmas tree. Students have made mosaic pots, Christmas photo frames, painted garden pots and painted recycled bottle tops on coasters. Levi’s mum will be making the cake again this year for our “guess the weight of the cake” game. Well done to Levi in Year 12 who completed and passed successfully three ASDAN modules: Out in the Community, Waterskills and Horticulture. The other students are busy finishing off their files ready to be moderated this term. Adam is doing a second day of work experience at Margaret Court packing fruit and continues to work at ACTIV in Osborne Park doing assembly work as part of a production line. Adam has been given lots of positive feedback from both employers. Keep up the fantastic work ethic Adam!! There have been a few changes to the weekly

timetable this term. The students are enjoying

bike riding and going on the scooter with the

nice weather lately. The students have also

been visiting the canteen where they use their

communication devices to request what they

would like. Last Wednesday we caught two

buses and a train to IKEA and had lunch in the

food court. Dhruv and Moses enjoyed the

excursion to a different place and are

superstars at “tagging on and off” with their

smartrider.

Year 7-1 Hello and welcome to Term 4! Can you believe the year is almost over! It’s certainly set to be a very busy term with lots going on and a great deal still yet to come. We had a great start to the term with an excursion to Scitech. The day started with a show called Tilt in the planetarium followed by some free time to check out all the exhibits Scitech had to offer. Everyone looked like they were having a great time participating in the different activities, lots of laughs and smiles all round! We finished the day with another science show called ‘Things that Glow’. It was a fantastic show that had everyone engaged and laughing out loud. It was so much fun! We made sure to take lots of photos and used them to write about the day back at school. I was really impressed with the effort everyone put in to writing their excursion recount.

I am pleased to say that everyone has been working extremely hard in the classroom. The progress individual students have been making towards their IEP goals is super impressive. In D & T they have been busy making a range of items to sell for Market Day. I can’t wait to see them! We have also been using recycled materials in the classroom to make decorations to sell on the day. It is looking set to be another great event so it would be lovely to see you there on Thursday the 15

th of November.

That’s all from me for me but as always please don’t hesitate to contact me via email or your

child’s school planner! It’s always great to hear from you!

Year 7-2

Wow, we are already half way through Term 4 and it has been so busy with lots of things going on. Term 4 is always a busy and exciting time of year - especially for the Year 7’s who have had their very first year in high school. The students have been working on preparing some lovely craft ideas for Market Day. They have been making stress balls with rice and corn flower. It has been quite tricky, a few even broke the first few times. BUT, with team work and practice, they have made some pretty amazing stress balls and also decorated them with some clever art. Magic sand is also up for sale at Market Day, as mentioned in our last newsletter. This term, the class have put some pretty fancy Christmas decorations on them, to make them look great for purchase. Students have also made some Santa faces and reindeer faces. We hope that all the students and visitors love our designs. In class, students have been working really hard to achieve their IEP goals. They have engaged in a number of fun games and activities to showcase their English skills. We have all improved with our Spelling and have fun in the mornings making new words from our letter blocks. We are all looking forward to the rest of the term!

Year 7-3 Term 4 has been busy from the get go! We have resumed our swimming lessons at HBF Arena Joondalup. The class enjoy their weekly lessons. The students especially look forward to their time in the whirlpool and can’t wait to get on the water slide on our last day! It has been wonderful to see how far the boys have progressed with their swimming skills. As we are a sporty bunch, one of our favourite subjects is our weekly Physical Education activity with our friends in T1. Miss. Thompson and myself have been most impressed with how far everyone’s AFL skills have developed! We can all now hold the football correctly to kick and to handball with accuracy. In Fire Tech the students have been making their own Lego Stop Motion videos, by using a range of technologies to design their own characters and storylines to film! Evan and Kade are making movies about robot battles; Josh’s film is about monsters and humans fighting off alien invaders; Blake’s film is about the adventures of cowboy monsters; Theo’s film is about Lego people living in a Lego world; Hamish’s video will be set in a Woolworths store and Jacobs story is about a boy and a red fire phoenix who find cursed objects and solve mysteries. Check out the photos of the cool guitars that we made in Music with Mr Offszanka! It was a real eye opener to see that we can make instruments out of everyday objects. We also made flutes out of straws and hope to make our own drums! We can’t wait to share the photos of our

Market Day activities and our excursion to

Optus Oval in our next newsletter. Stay tuned

for our next exciting instalment!

Year 8-1

This term is certainly going fast. As usual the students are busy working towards their individual goals. We have also been preparing for the upcoming Market Day, producing a number of items, including Christmas cakes, Christmas decorations, planter boxes, decorated shopping bags and Reindeer noses. In PE we have finished swimming for the year and have returned to bike riding and ball games. In science we are looking at the three types of rocks (igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic). In HASS we have been learning about rules and laws in our daily lives. Below are some pictures of the students busy preparing for market day and some of the

products that they are working on!

We are all looking forward to the second half of term and the exciting things we have on,

including an excursion to Yanchep, Market Day, Adventure day and of course Christmas

activities. Some more fun times ahead.

Year 8-2 It has been an exciting start to Term 4. We were very excited to welcome a new member to our class. It has been great to see how friendly our students have been and how they have included Liam in all their activities. Welcome Liam we hope you have a great time in our class. We went on an excursion to Yanchep National Park and it was Awesome! We began the day

by going for a walk through a gorge and looking at the rock formations. We had fun on the

obstacle course timing each other as we went around. Afterwards we made our way to Crystal

Cave where we had a guided tour. We all had a great time!

In History we are learning about Medieval times and exploring the work the peasants had to do. We had fun making our own butter and eating it afterwards although it was very tiring! Science is all about energy. What are the different forms of energy, what the energy does and what we use the energy for. We are all looking forward to the rest of the term and the year. Year 9-1 It has been a very busy start to Term 4 in the 9-2 class, the students have jumped straight back into their swimming lessons and are doing “swimmingly” ! In our Science class students have been making their own cars using recycled materials. The students will move their cars to demonstrate friction on different flooring materials, they will also use different angles to see what results they achieve. Students have been working hard on their PBS class assignment, showing kindness to each other and have enjoyed using their ICT skills filming and doing voice overs for our stop motion class project. We have lots of exciting weeks ahead in the lead up to the end of Year 9. We have Market Day, a class excursion, fun activities for Christmas as well as some important school work to complete all off our hard work this year!

Year 9-2 Year 9-2 students have been really working hard on their learning tasks since returning from the end of Term 3 break. We have been studying Australia’s involvement in WW1 and on Wednesday, 31st October we visited the Army Museum of Western Australia in Fremantle, to view the World War 1 and Trenches galleries. A wonderful senior citizen, volunteer Mr Berry led our tour. He provided a wealth of information about the war and answered everyone’s questions about the exhibits. As coincidence has it, Mr Berry turned out to be the uncle of two of our past pupils, Nic and Thomas Berry! We viewed life like displays of soldiers in uniform carrying out their duty and war nurses as well as an array of weaponry, manuals, medal and photos from WW1 In addition there were maps and photos of the Western Front, Palestine and Gallipoli where Australians fought and stories about Australian recipients of the Victoria Cross. There was also life size model of a trench for students to explore. After leaving the museum we then visited Monument Hill in Fremantle. This features a massive war memorial o to Fremantle citizens who lost their lives fighting overseas during the World War I. It can be seen out to sea as ships come into Fremantle harbour. It was suggested by one of our students that I take a photo of them all in front of the memorial saluting in honour, the brave men and women who lost their lives. Undoubtedly our students have a new appreciation for just how dangerous and horrific the war was as well as the contribution Australian made. It was a fitting time for the excursion with Wednesday 31

st October being

the 101st anniversary of the Battle of Beersheba

the beginning the Southern Palestine Offensive of the Sinai and Palestine campaign of World War I and with the 100

th

anniversary of the end of WW1 on Remembrance Day, 11

th November this year.

We were very proud of our students’

participation and interest in our excursion and

the respect that they showed throughout the

day.

Mental Health Week

To promote this years’ Mental Health Week ‘ held in October we started by sharing the key message of “Mental

Health starts where we live, learn, work and play”. The term started with an exciting mental health information

session on the Friday of week 1. Representatives from Headspace and CentreCare came to share information

about their services and ideas of activities to maintain mental wellbeing. We had a positive and enthusiastic

number of students and staff participating in the activities including the colouring in competition, lolly jar

guessing, and insights of your own personality based on a picture test – which was a revelation for some! Our

visitors praised the students for an engaging participation and their knowledge of how to promote mental health

was also very commendable. The overall feedback from the representatives was that they would love to be

invited back to Belridge Secondary ESC for events in the future.

Everyone did an amazing job with the Colouring In competition. It was a difficult task to choose the winners but

in the end it was Tanaya (12-2), Jacob (7-3) and Xavier (12-2) who showed us their great artistic skills.

A Big Thank You to everyone, in particular the Student Councillors, Mr Cann and the Transport and

Logistics team who helped organise and set up for the event.

Kade (7-3), Nelly (9-2) and Evan (7-3) also received prizes for their great job. Well done to all the students.

The winner of the lolly jar guess was Amber

from 9-1 and a close second was Libby from

8-2

Year 10-1 Here we are, only 5 weeks of school left. The year has gone very quickly and students and staff are working hard to complete projects and activates as we approach the last weeks of term. The highlight of our Community Access excursions so far this term has bee the Optus Stadium tour. The bridge to the stadium offers fantastic views in all directions. Its black and white spiral structure design was inspired by the black and white swans on the river and eventually will offer bridge climbs similar to Sydney Harbour Bridge. Once over the bridge, we started our tour in the stadium. We were lucky enough to see the club change rooms, ice baths, pre-game meeting rooms and coach’s boxes for the Dockers and Eagles. We also sat in leather recliner seats that are reserved for $8000 per season and you must pay for a minimum of two. WOW! We had a wonderful day. The students also really enjoyed our last excursion to Ern Halliday where they had to locate and rescue a “lost pilot” through mapping and radio communication. They did a great job! We look forward to our remaining Community Access and DFES excursions. Remember to check student diaries for notes and information. The students are starting their Market day craft and creations. So remember to mark the date in your calendar, November 15th, to come and

do a bit of Christmas shopping and enjoy the hard work of all our Belridge ESC students. I would like to take the opportunity to thank the staff in 10-1, Brooke Galupo, Shirley Curran, Kim Adams and Kelly Taylor for their ongoing hard work and dedication to the students; also thanks to the DFES tea m Carrie Donovan and Alison Mitchell.

Year 10-2 Term Four has got off to a busy start, with students working hard across all learning areas! In Mathematics, the students have been learning about perimeter and area. In English, as well as daily spelling activities, they have been writing a series of recounts and narratives, while the Behind the News (BTN) television program remains a firm favourite every Friday! During Physical Education classes, the class has played some wonderful games of cricket, each student taking their turn to bat, bowl, and field. During the year in Agri-Foods, the students propagated a range of succulents and herbs, and then transplanted them into pots. They are now ready to go on sale at Market Day on November 15

th, in a variety of containers

which the students have recently decorated. Two of our students recently participated in the “Try a Trade” program run by Trades North. This three day course gave them a taste of working in a variety of trades, including plastering and bricklaying. Both students thoroughly enjoyed the experience, and performed magnificently! As part of our Community Access program, the students have visited Scitech, Zone Bowling, and also completed a workout with an instructor at HBF Arena. As part of our DFES program, the group recently spent a wonderful morning at Ern Halliday Recreation Camp. The students had to work together as a team, finding clues to enable them to discover the location of a “Lost Pilot”. Keep up the great work everyone!

Year 11-1 The Final Touches The students are in the process of applying the final touches to their Transport & Logistics Certificate by completing their assessment booklets and attaching their evidence. This course has been an intense one so I would like to say well done to all students for getting all of the required outcomes completed. Let’s Get Crafty Class 11-1 have been getting their creative spark firing by preparing for our up and coming Market Day. The students have produced some exciting and beautifully made art and craft pieces. The class have created trivets made of recycled boards, second hand mosaic tiles and donated grout and glue. Students have also made some Christmas themed string art which will also be on sale on the day. As if that wasn’t enough, students will also be preparing recycled aluminium tin lanterns and will be running a Chocolate Toss on the day. One More Big Push ASDAN – Workright folders are enrolled for moderation on 16

th November and I’m extremely

pleased that all student’s folders are looking fantastic and ready to be marked. Well done to all students for their persistence at getting all the sections completed to a great standard. High Flying at Latitude As part of our DFES program students got the joy of going to Latitude in Edgewater. For those who don’t know what Latitude is or what it entails, this is an indoor play centre where children through to adults can experience trampolines, rock climbing, parkour, abseiling, obstacle courses and slam-ball all under one roof! I think it’s safe to say that the students thoroughly enjoyed their time at Latitude. Working Hard for The Workforce Workplace Learning has continued for its fourth and final term of the year and once again huge congratulations to all students for working hard and for representing the school with their professional and mature conduct. The home stretch So as we approach mid-term, I applaud all the students of 11-1 for their hard work so far this term and to encourage them to keep it going for the remaining weeks of the year.

November 2018

Year 11-2 It’s been an exciting start to term four, introducing new learning programs and finalising others. The Transport and Logistics Certificate I Course is coming to a closure with all assessments now complete. Throughout term three, students worked to achieve the unit of competency ‘small store operations’ by picking and packing orders, completing deliveries within the school and completing stocktake in both the sports shed and the maths resource storeroom. Last week the class created a training video to recap all they have learned and show other classes what to expect in Transport and Logistics. Mr Kim’s voice over clearly highlighted many skills practised. Students participated in the flexibility ‘sit and reach’ test and the fitness ‘beep’ test on Friday in week one. All students pushed themselves to achieve their limits. For this reason, further fitness tests were postponed to a later date. There was a point during the beep test we didn’t think Ben and Denzel were going to stop! We are hoping to see an improvement in our fitness after our weekly gym sessions at Duncraig Leisure Centre. Travelling via different routes using Transperth to and from the venue is a way of engaging students in travel training. Students have been practising using the Transperth App and each will be rostered to lead the group on the travel route. Well done to Isaac and Max who attend TAFE on Friday, they have also participated in transport training and increased their independence. Year 11 delivered a class assembly to senior school staff and students. Everyone in the class contributed to a speaking part and I was very proud of them for conquering their nerves and delivering their lines clearly into the microphone. Our presentation highlighted the volunteer work students have been involved in throughout Year 11. They showcased a Mercy Care video and a PowerPoint of pictures highlighting their time at Coastal Care . Thank You to Lachlan for putting this together.

Year 12-1 What an exciting term we are having to finish the year. There are a lots of excursions planned, Market day preparations underway, work trials being organised and transition activities being completed. The Graduation ceremony was an outstanding highlight for the students. They were very excited to wear the graduation gown and to receive their Belridge sash and graduation folder. They showed exemplary behaviour at the rehearsal and on the night, and it was lovely to see each of them enjoy the evening so much. I was impressed with how supportive they were of each other, congratulating each other and the award winners from the Secondary College as well as those from our centre. The class has been very busy making Christmas decorations with Mrs Riley to sell on Market day. They have also voted on biscuit recipes to make for the class stall which will be very tempting for everyone. Mrs Riley has been doing Singing in English this term. Each student has learnt the words of their favourite song and been practicing their singing each week using a microphone. Their confidence is growing and they are all showing improvement. Well done! Ella sings “Buried Treasure” by the Wiggles Leticia sings “Walk Like an Egyptian” by the Bangles Jacob sings “in the Air tonight” by Phil Collins Beth sings “Because your beautiful” by One Direction and “Beauty and the Beast” Madi sings “Baby” by Justin Bieber Arthur sings “ Shotgun” by George Ezra Chloe sings “Perfect” by Ed Sheeran Ben sings “ Football songs”

Year 12-2 The countdown is definitely on for the end of secondary schooling in 12-2 and there is a growing sense of maturity, independence and excitement in the class as students take part in celebrations and planning for their post school options. In week 5, the class will participate in an overnight DFES camp on Rottnest Island and in preparation for this trip, we have been building up either our walking or cycling fitness. This has taken place at Neil Hawkins Park and Mullaloo Beach Park with improvement showing in the second week. Thank you to Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Bowler two of our DFES trainers for their continued dedication to an amazing program for our students. The class has celebrated with their Year 12 cohort from both the ESC and Secondary College with the Graduation Ceremony. It was a prestigious event at Joondalup Resort and our students represented our school community in a positive and mature light. Congratulations go to our special award winners, Sam, Courtney, Arthur, Jacob and Amber. Thank you to Ms Hunt and Mrs Harris from the Secondary College and Mrs Taylor from our school for their hard work and commitment in organising such a fantastic evening. Cobra Café and Coffee Club continues to run smoothly with the students becoming more independent throughout the program. The class staff have taken more of a step back this term and supervise the students completing the tasks of organising customer lists, labels and packaging, preparing the espresso coffee and preparing, cooking and serving the delicious menu items. Thank you to Mrs Wearing, Mrs Williams, Mrs Mitchell and Mrs Martland for their positive work with the students and to Mrs Wood for her work in ordering food items and preparing the ILC.

Lego Club

Lego club began with the visit of Indiana Jones! This was a huge hit with all the students. There were some epic battles and lots of lovely social interaction and sharing of the Lego. The students have had the zombies and ghosts invasion this week with Halloween on the calendar. Scooby Doo and his pals are also ghost hunting in the ESC Lego club with lots of student assistance obviously ! One of our senior builders Arthur Sturgeon has completed a large Nexo Knights build, which has taken him over a term to do as he goes out on work placement. His perseverance and commitment to finish this build has been fantastic, well done Arthur. His set is now on display in the front office tor all to view. We are looking forward to a few more competitions towards the end of this term and there are lots of Lego prizes to be won !

Work Place Learning The year is nearly over and I congratulate our senior school students on outstanding success over the year in our VET and Workplace Learning programs. I would like to acknowledge our Year 12 students who have worked so well during the year completing their courses, Certificate II and ASDAN so successfully. Also thanks to Mrs Spedding for adapting the Certificate II course so that her students with different career aspirations were able to complete their courses in their area of study: Community Services, Business and Skills and Vocational Pathways. Congratulations go to Xavier Moore-Price for successfully completing his Traineeship in Certificate II Retail through Good Samaritan Industries this year. Our first student to complete a retail traineeship. Congratulations go to Ella Hogan for gaining employment in 2019 through work trials and success at work place learning over the year. Also three other students are currently on work trials to secure a placement for 2019. Several other students are currently with employment providers and in the process of looking for work for the future. And yet another Congratulations to Utah Kendall in Year 11 who has gained a School Based Traineeship with Red Rooster. Utah has commenced two days a week of paid work and will also gain a Certificate II in Retail. TAFE applications are also open and any Year 12 students wishing to apply for 2019 need to visit the NMetro TAFE website and apply online to gain a place. Courses at Leederville will be holding interviews in December so students need to register with them now as well. We wish all students success in their endeavours now for the new year. If parents have any queries about courses please contact me in the next week at school.

From the Chaplain This term I have been facilitating a “Social Club” that runs every Monday lunch time. Each week

different activities are offered to the students participating, including, arts and crafts, ball games,

charades and a kinetic sand station. It has been great to see students from different year levels

participate each week and to see the students stepping out of their comfort zone, by getting to

know people outside of their normal friendship group. The social club always has a fun and

positive atmosphere and I have loved facilitating it this term.
